As USD 428 prepares for the first day of school Aug. 27, the Great Bend school district works to ease the transition to heightened health precautions due to COVID-19.

With every K-12 student, staff member and visitor required to wear masks while in the school building, the district will provide “mask breaks” throughout the day where students can remove their masks in a safe environment.

USD 428 Public Information Director Andrea Bauer said during Monday's Great Bend Chamber Chat that the younger students will be given a lanyard to better keep tabs of their masks.

"For elementary kids there will be a lanyard in their mask pack that will probably stay in the classroom," said Bauer. "This will be a way to keep track of it because wearing a mask does not necessarily mean it is on their face eight hours a day."

As part of enrollment, the district is distributing a facemask care package to each student and employee. The package will include five masks and a laundry bag that the masks drop into to be cleaned at the end of the week.

"In those passing periods or any common space, that is when it makes the most sense to make sure those masks are on," said Bauer. "During lunch and recess there will be times we need the kids to keep track of their masks."
