What to know if you are going to the Chiefs champions parade

KANSAS CITY —Downtown Kansas City is turning into a sea of red for Valentine's Day as Chiefs fans celebrate their third Super Bowl title in five seasons with a parade.

Ride KC wil provide free shuttle service from five park and ride locations to the Champions parade.

Fans can catch a shuttle bus from 7:30-10:30 a.m. and then again from 12-3:30 p.m. There may be a wait at some of the locations as many Chiefs fans are expected to use the shuttle service.

Buses will only return fans to park-and-rides.  After the parade, fans should board return shuttles where they were dropped off before the parade. The shuttle bus destination will be displayed on the overhead sign.

The Shuttle Park-and-Rides are below:

  1. HyVee Arena (KCMO): Buses will drop off and pick up downtown at 18th & Troost.
  2. Former K-Mart at Chouteau and Vivion (2835 NE Vivion, KCMO): Buses will drop off and pick up in downtown at Truman & Lydia.
  3. Oak Park Mall (Overland Park, Kan.) on the northeast side of the Mall parking lot, near 95th & Nieman. First bus leaves this site at 7 a.m.; last bus leaves this site at 10 a.m. Shuttle buses from Oak Park Mall will drop off and pick up at the corner of 25th St. & Southwest Blvd. Last shuttle departs for Oak Park Mall at 4 p.m.
  4. 47th & State Transit Center (Kansas City, Kan.): Buses will drop off and pick up at HyVee Arena, where passengers will make a transfer to RideKC buses heading to 18th & Troost.
  5. Swope Park/Zoo Parking Lot (KCMO/Jackson County): Buses will drop off and pick up in downtown at 31st & Gillham.

The shuttles will not pick up or drop off passengers at any other stop. 

Coolers, lawn chairs, alcoholic beverages, weapons, fireworks and any other items prohibited by the RideKC Code of Conduct will not be allowed on buses. Strollers must be folded prior to boarding. Due to the major impact of the parade, regular RideKC service will be significantly impacted.

RideKC service operated by KCATA. Only 13 regular routes will be operating. If the route is not listed here, it will not be running. 

  1. Eleven routes will run all day with reduced frequency. After 7 a.m. most of these 11 routes will have significant detours.Four of the 11 routes will operate hourly service:Main MAX, Prospect MAX, Troost MAX and 63 63rd St.These local routes will operate approximately 30-minute service:24 Independence, 28 Blue Ridge, 31 31st St., 39 39th St., 47 Broadway, 101 State Avenue, 106 Quindaro-Amazon and 229 Boardwalk-KCI.
  2. Four of the 11 routes will operate hourly service:Main MAX, Prospect MAX, Troost MAX and 63 63rd St.
  3. Main MAX, Prospect MAX, Troost MAX and 63 63rd St.
  4. These local routes will operate approximately 30-minute service:24 Independence, 28 Blue Ridge, 31 31st St., 39 39th St., 47 Broadway, 101 State Avenue, 106 Quindaro-Amazon and 229 Boardwalk-KCI.
  5. 24 Independence, 28 Blue Ridge, 31 31st St., 39 39th St., 47 Broadway, 101 State Avenue, 106 Quindaro-Amazon and 229 Boardwalk-KCI.
  6. One Flex route (99 South Kansas City Flex) will run reduced service all day for critical medical trips only.
  7. Express routes will NOT run.

RideKC Streetcar RideKC Streetcar will operate in an adjusted capacity. The Union Station streetcar stop will close to passengers at the end of regular service Tuesday, Feb. 13. On Wednesday, Feb. 14, KC Streetcar service will be available at all stops except Union Station.

RideKC service from Johnson CountyFixed routes in Johnson County will NOT run. This includes all routes numbered in the 400s and 500s, including 510. Only Special Edition RideKC Freedom, SWIFT and Micro Transit will run. Micro Transit will not serve destinations in Kansas City, Mo. RideKC Freedom from Johnson County to KCMO will only be available for medically necessary or employment necessary trips. RideKC Freedom will not be able to make trips into Union Station and Downtown areas affected by the parade.   

RideKC operated by Unified Government TransitRoutes 113, 116, 118 and 199 Micro Transit will run. 103 will travel to 3rd & Wyandotte.

RideKC routes in Independence Routes 301, 302, 303, 304, 305, and 306 will offer regular service.

On Wednesday, ticketed Amtrak passengers must enter and exit Union Station via the rotunda entrance on the lower level of the west side of the building (adjacent to the planetarium / directly across from the West Yards Garage).

Parade route and road closures

Pershing Road, from Main Street to Kessler Rd, will be closed beginning Monday, February 12. Road closures on the parade route will begin on Tuesday, February 13 at 11:00am. 

Union Station will be closed to public access beginning Tuesday, February 13 at 11:59pm.  It will reopen on Wednesday, February 14 at approximately 4:00pm. 

The streets running east and west of Grand Blvd will be closed between Walnut & McGee from 6th street on the north to Pershing Road on the south. Street closures will be in effect beginning at 11:00am Tuesday, February 13.  

Main Street, from 20th Street to Pershing Road will be closed to vehicles and pedestrians on Wednesday, February 14.  

Main Street from Pershing Road to 27th Street will be closed to vehicles but open to pedestrians. Additional closures on Main from 27th to 31st will be in effect when the parade starts.  

Vehicular Traffic

Vehicular Traffic will be allowed to cross at the following locations until Wednesday morning, February 14, at 8:00 a.m. 

  1. 7th Street / Admiral Blvd 
  2. Truman Road North and South 
  3. 18th Street 
  4. 12th Street (until 11:59pm on Tuesday, Feb. 13) 
  5. 13th Street (until 11:59pm on Tuesday, Feb. 13) 

PEDESTRIAN CROSSINGS 

Pedestrian Crossings along the parade route on Grand will be available at the following locations. Please look for the large red feather flags to indicate crosswalk. 

  1. 9th Street 
  2. 13th Street 
  3. Truman Road 
  4. 18th Street 
  5. 20th Street 

Motorists should avoid the areas along and around the parade route, including Grand Blvd, Pershing Road and Main Street. Drivers should use alternate routes and allow for extra time when traveling in the area. 

There will be significant travel delays on Wednesday. Additional road closures and lane restrictions may be necessary during the event to maintain public safety. 

Streets will reopen as early as conditions allow.  

Transit and Parking

There will be significant travel delays on roadways and street closures immediately before, during, and after the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade. 

KC STREETCAR

On Wednesday, February 14, KC Streetcar passenger service will be available at all streetcar stops except Union Station. Starting Wednesday morning, riders and parade goers must exit the KC Streetcar at the Crossroads southbound stop. Northbound travelers may board the KC Streetcar at the Crossroads northbound stop. The Union Station streetcar stop will close to passengers at the end of regular service Tuesday, February 13.        KC Streetcar service will start at its regularly scheduled time of 6:00 a.m. and will operate with 10-12 minute frequencies until approximately 10:30 a.m. At that time, streetcar service will be temporarily suspended until the end of the Chiefs Kingdom Champions Parade and Rally. Streetcar service will resume once the tracks are clear between 20th Street and Pershing Road. Notice of the resumption of service will be posted on the KC Streetcar website, social media channels, and communicated through our RideKC Notify text alert service. Sign up for notification of resumption of streetcar service by texting “streetcar” to 816.685.8541. 

KCATA PARK & RIDE LOCATIONS (ROUNDTRIP SERVICE PROVIDED) 

Park and Ride shuttles will run from 7:00 a.m.-10:30 a.m., and then again from 12 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.. Riders need to return to the drop off location for their specific shuttle. Please account for possible wait times at park and ride locations. Be prepared for a 45 minute wait at popular locations.

PARKING RESTRICTIONS

There will be parking restrictions along and around the parade route. These restrictions go into effect at 11:00am on Tuesday, February 13, and extend into the evening on Wednesday, February 14. Cars parked in temporary no parking zones will be relocated at owner's expense. Cars parked on the interstate will be relocated at owner’s expense.  If your vehicle has been relocated, you may call (816) 513-0688 for the location.  

Most lots around the parade site will be charging for parking, including the National WWI Museum and Memorial, Union Station, Crown Center, City garages and lots , and the West Bottoms Shuttle Service. Please check the organization websites for more details. 

RIDE SHARE

Ride Share drop and pickup locations are:

  1. 3rd & Grand
  2. 27th Ter & McGee

Travel to downtown KCMO by scooter or bike! There are three micro-mobility partners in Kansas City that provide an alternative way to navigate around town during parade festivities: RideKCBike and Bird.  

Please keep in mind: 

  1. Scooters and bikes will not be permitted to ride in road closure areas 
  2. Be mindful of pedestrians and do not ride on sidewalks 
  3. Obey traffic laws 

PUBLIC SAFETY INFORMATION 

The perimeter of the parade will be firmly secured and protected for maximum public safety.  The City asks the public to do their part, use common sense, and stay aware of their surroundings. Attendees should immediately report suspicious activity by notifying a police officer or dialing 911. 

Use, operation, deployment, or monitoring of any aerial vehicle, including but not limited to any fixed wing rotoaircraft, drone, rocket, powered balloons, ultralights, or model aircraft, regardless of whether controlled by line of sight, radio frequency, tethers, or any other means, is prohibited at any time during the parade. Violators may be subject to prosecution and fines for violations of FAA regulated airspace restrictions. 

Attendees Should: 

  1. Not leave bags unattended and immediately contact police if they notice an unattended bag. 
  2. Make a plan regarding travel, parking, supervision of children and wear comfortable and warm attire.  Be prepared to walk, as road closures near the parade route will lead to traffic congestion and delays. 
  3. Note that CELL PHONE RECEPTION MAY BE EXTREMELY LIMITED. 
  4. Make a plan in case you become separated from your party, including identifying meetup points in case of separation.  It is recommended that you take photos of your family in the event that you need to locate them and identify what they are wearing. 
  5. Ensure children have contact information for their parents or guardians on their person. 

MEDICAL

The Kansas City Fire Department will have roving crews and also a staffed medic (EMS) tent on the eastside of the National WWI Museum between the north and south lawn (see map for location). 

If you require emergency medical attention, locate a roving KCFD firefighter. KCFD crews will be located on the perimeter of the parade route and around Union Station. They will be identifiable via fluorescent green vests and flags.

REUNIFICATION

If you become separated from your group, locate a police officer.  Any missing people or children will be taken to one of seven reunification locations:
