Kansas man charged for firing shots at police during standoff

JOHNSON COUNTY—A Kansas man has been charged in connection with a shooting during during a welfare check.

Gary Wheeler, 66, Shawnee is charged with attempted capital murder and discharging a gun into an occupied dwelling after a standoff in the 6300 block of Albervan December 21, according to the Johnson County District Attorney's office.

On the night of the incident, Wheeler's neighbor reported they heard gunshots. Shawnee Police responded to check the Wheeler's welfare  after he was reportedly making claims he was going to hurt himself and others. 

When officers arrived, Wheeler fired additional shots as officers approached his residence. Police took him into custody without incident. He’s being held on a $1 million bond. He is due in court Jan. 4, according to online jail records.
