Cause of fire that destroyed church under investigation

KANSAS CITY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a  fire that destroyed a church south of Kansas City.

Just after 6a.m. Wednesday, the Bates County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call on a fire at the Methodist Church located at the intersection of Kentucky Street and Main Street in Adrian, Missouri, approximately 50 miles south of Kansas City and 45 minutes east of Paola, Kansas.

When Adrian Police arrived on scene, they observed heavy smoke coming from the eaves of the building. As firemen made entry into the church they observed the church to be fully involved in fire.

Additional mutual aid was requested.  Fire Departments from Butler, Amsterdam, Drexel, Central Cass, Harrisonville and Dolan West Dolan responded to assist. Bates County EMS, Missouri State Highway Patrol and Bates County Sheriff’s Office also responded to assist. 

The Adrian Fire Department has requested assistance on the investigation from the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the ATF.
