SEDGWICK COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a juvenile in custody in Sedgwick County.

On Sept. 24, police booked a 17-year-old boy into the Juvenile Intake Assessment Center, 700 South Hydraulic in Sedgwick, Kansas  on requested charges of that included three counts of battery of a law enforcement officer, according to Col. Brian White with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office.

While in custody, the teen also assaulted juvenile assessment center staff and was restrained with handcuffs and more including the WRAP process, according to White. After he was restrained, the teen became unresponsive and officials contacted emergency medical services. EMS transported the teen to a local hospital. He died on Sunday, according to White.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation is in charge of the investigation. The Sedgwick County Sheriff's office is assisting. The Sheriff's office does not oversee the Juvenile Intake Assessment Center, according to White. The county runs that facility.
