1 of 2 men burned in Kan. oil field tank battery explosion died

FINNEY COUNTY —One of two men injured in an  oil field accident in southwest Kansas has died, according to the Finney County Sheriff's office.

Just before 11:30a.m. Wednesday, the Garden City Fire Department responded to the report of an industrial accident, explosion in the area of 3300 West Annie Scheer Road in Finney County, according to a media release.

Deputies and other first responders found that two men from Liberal had been working on an oil tank in the area when their work caused an explosion inside the tank. Both men were severely burned in the blast and were ultimately flown to Wichita for medical care. One of the men succumbed to his injuries in Wichita. 

Following the transportation of the victims, fire personnel began firefighting operations on a small fire that was contained to an oil field tank battery. The fire was called under control at just after noon.

This incident is not being investigated as a criminal incident, according to the Sheriff's office.  The sheriff's office has not released the names of the men injured.

Mutual aid on scene was provided by Finney County EMS, Finney County Sheriff Department, Finney County Emergency Management, Kansas Highway Patrol, Holcomb Volunteer Fire Department, and Holcomb Police Department.
