Even during the pandemic, USD 428 was able to hire employees to fill their open positions heading into the 2020-2021 school year. Assistant Superintendent John Popp says there is one school psychologist position the Great Bend school district wants to hire but they should have that taken care of by the end of the year with a current employee rising up through the system.

Just recently the district was able to hire a married couple to fill the teacher positions at Lincoln Elementary School and Great Bend High School.

"It is a husband and wife combo who were teaching overseas," said Popp. "They would like to go back overseas if at all possible this year, but we may have them all year. They are fully licensed that will be in there at least a semester."

New teacher orientation took place earlier this week. Great Bend teachers will continue with in-service and work days next week. Teachers and staff were given an extra week before school starts on Aug. 27 to prepare for the new COVID-19 protocols.
