Police: Kansas woman lost $5,800 in phone scam

RILEY COUNTY--Law enforcement are investigating another alleged scam.

Just before 3p.m. Wednesday, officers filed a report for theft by deception  in the 1100 block of Bluemont Avenue in Manhattan, according to the Riley County Police Department activity report.

A 21-year-old woman  reported an unknown suspect impersonated an officer on a phone call to scam the victim out of money. The total estimated loss associated with this case is $5,888.23

The RCPD reminded, "please remember, even if a message or request doesn’t seem suspicious, always doublecheck its legitimacy. Verify through trusted sources before ever sharing personal information. RCPD will never request payment over the phone, nor payment of any kind in barcodes or gift cards. If you receive a call similar to this, please contact us at (785) 537-2112 to verify it was an RCPD officer or employee that called you before you do anything."
