JOHNSON COUNTY—One person injured in a fire on Tuesday in Johnson County has died.

Just before 1:30p.m. Tuesday crews responded to a house fire in 21300 block of W 51st Street in the city of Shawnee, according to a media release.

Fist responders found a large amount of smoke and a working fire. Firefighters located and rescued a woman identified as 65-year-old Patricia Stevenson from inside of the home. She was transported to an area hospital in critical condition and later died.

An investigation determined that the fire was accidental and caused by unattended cooking. Fire investigators also did not find any working smoke alarms inside the home.

"Working smoke alarms can save lives. We encourage everyone to test and maintain working smoke alarms and stay with food while cooking. "
