SEDGWICK COUNTY — A spark from welding at a Kansas car dealership caused a fire on Monday.

At 5:45p.m., crews responded to the fire at Lubbers, 944 North Main Street in Cheney, according to Fire Chief Jerry Peitz.  Smoke from the fire could be seen for miles around. Crews worked quickly to keep the fire from reaching cars on the lot and had the fire contained at approximately 6:18p.m.

The welding on a forklift was being done in a back room where fluids, cleaners and other equipment are stored, according to Peitz.

Due to the amount of expensive diagnostic equipment and engines in the storage area, it is difficult for investigators to estimate a damage amount. There was also significant smoke damage in the bay area where techs work.

One dealership employee was treated for smoke inhalation, according to Peitz.  There were no other injuries. A fire crew from Sedgwick County also responded to assist.
