2 dogs rescued from intentionally set fire at Kansas home

SHAWNEE COUNTY—Authorities are working to determine the cause of a Kansas house fire.

Just before 4:30a.m. Thursday, fire crews responded to the fire in a home at 1105 SW Western Avenue in Topeka, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

When they arrived, fire crews found heavy smoke and flames coming from the front of the two story house. 

During the search, fire crews were able to locate two dogs and they were rescued alive from the home. 

A preliminary investigation indicates the cause of the fire as intentionally set pending further investigation. The estimated dollar loss – $12,000; of which $10,000 is associated with structural loss to the house, and $2,000 is associated with loss of contents in the garage.

Working smoke detectors were located within the home. There were no injuries reported, according to Harrison.
