SUMNER COUNTY —The Kansas Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal accident involving a pedestrian that occurred just after 8p.m. Friday in Sumner County.

The Kansas Turnpike Authority reported a 2014 Chevy Express driven by Fernando Martinez Gonzalez, 31, Kansas City, Missouri, was northbound on Interstate 35 just south of Mulvane.  The van struck a pedestrian identified as Shyann Clark, 18, Atlanta, Kansas, who was running across the road from a disabled vehicle.

Clark was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to Cornejo Funeral Home.  Gonzalez and six others on the van were not injured.

“Shyann was one of the sweetest, kindest, and most loving girls you could ever meet. She had a beautiful heart and brought warmth and happiness to everyone who had the privilege of knowing her. Her life was just beginning. She had recently started college and was looking forward to building her future and experiencing all that life had in store for her,” according to a GoFundMe for the family.
