Ridgeway claims individual title for Panthers

Great Bend junior Breanna Ridgeway claimed the individual championship at 126 pounds on her way to a perfect 39-0 record Thursday at the Division I state tournament in Park City. 

Ridgeway entered the tournament Thursday as the top ranked wrestler at 126 pounds and the top seed in the tournament and she would not disappoint.

It took Ridgeway no time to earn her first win , after finishing third a year ago at 130 pounds.

She recorded a first period fall over Jaidyn Andrews of Gardner-Edgerton in just :37 seconds.

Ridgeway followed that up with another in the championship semifinals, a 9-3 win over Madelynn Griffin of Emporia.

In the championship match Ridgeay defeated Belle Hernandez of Gardne City 6-0.

She becomes the first girl to win a state wrestling title in program history.

Senior Breckyn Elliott finsihed sixth at 101 pounds for Great Bend.

Elliott opened the tournament with a first-period fall over Alexandria Bruce of Shawnee Heights.

In the championship quarterfinals Elliott suffered her first loss of the tournament, a 4-3 decision to Erin Wetterstrom of Olathe East.

Elliott suffered her second loss of the tournament, falling by a fall in the third period to Arianna Ortiz of Kansas City-Turner.

She forfeited the fifth place matchup to finish sixth at 101 pounds with a record of 19-9.

First-time qualifier Daizy Gomez finish 0-2 at Thursday's touranment at 120 pounds.

Gomez finishes the year 22-15.

Great Bend tallied 29 team points at tied for 11th as a team.
