One winner claims the $1.040 billion Powerball jackpot

Posted Aug 13, 2026 9:30 AM

The eighth-largest jackpot in Powerball® history has been won in Illinois. A single ticket sold in Illinois matched all six numbers drawn Wednesday night to win a $1.040 billion jackpot. The jackpot has a cash value of $450.5 million, according to the Multi-State Lottery Association.

The winning numbers in the Wednesday, Aug. 12 Powerball drawing were white balls 4, 26, 66, 67, 69 and red Powerball 9. The Power Play® multiplier was 2.

With final ticket sales, the Powerball jackpot reached $1.040 billion, making it the largest Powerball prize won so far this year and the eighth-largest jackpot in the game’s history.

The lucky winner may choose either an annuitized prize of $1.040 billion or a lump-sum payment of $450.5 million. Both prize options are before taxes. If the winner selects the annuity option, they will receive the prize in 30 graduated payments over 29 years.

“Congratulations to our newest Powerball jackpot winner in Illinois,” said Stephen Durrell, Chair of the Powerball Product Group and Executive Director of the Kansas Lottery. “For more than three decades, Powerball has shown that a winning ticket can be sold anywhere the game is played, giving every $2 ticket the chance to change not only a winner’s life, but generations to come. As participation continues to grow across markets, players are helping fuel larger jackpots and create even greater excitement for the game.”

Wednesday’s Powerball drawing was the 44th consecutive drawing in the jackpot run after the jackpot was last won on May 2. It was also the first jackpot run to include players from the United Kingdom since Powerball ticket sales launched there on July 21, 2026. With UK players now participating, the expanded player base is expected to help accelerate jackpot growth and increase the potential for larger jackpots.

Lotteries are urging players to check their tickets carefully, as more than 3 million tickets won cash prizes in Wednesday night’s drawing by matching one or more of the winning numbers.

Four tickets sold in Arizona, California, Florida and North Carolina matched all five white balls to win the Match 5 prize. The Match 5 prize is a set cash prize of $1 million, except in California, where prize payouts are pari-mutuel and determined by sales and the number of winners. A fifth ticket sold in Massachusetts also matched all five white balls and, because it included the Power Play option for an additional $1, increased its winnings to $2 million.

For the next drawing on Saturday, the Powerball jackpot resets to $20 million. The Power Play® 10X multiplier will be available for play since the advertised jackpot is below $150 million.
