Kansas man sentenced for home-invasion murder

SEDGWICK COUNTY—A Kansas man is going to prison for a home-invasion killing.

On Wednesday, Judge Jeffrey Goering sentenced 40-year-old Shannon Cavitt to life with parole eligibility after 25 years, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office. 

Just before 8a.m. August 15, police were dispatched to a shooting in the 5200 block of East Gilbert in Wichita, according to a Officer Chad Ditch.

First responders located 49-year-old Dennis Haynes unconscious and not breathing. Officers began life-saving measures.  EMS  transported him to a local hospital where he was pronounced deceased.

The investigation revealed that Haynes and several other people were inside the residence when two armed men later identified as Cavitt  and Caviontay Conway, 21, both of Wichita entered and shot the victim.

 Caviontay Conway is scheduled for a hearing on January 11, according to the district attorney's office. He is charged with first-degree murder, aggravated burglary, aggravated robbery and kidnapping.
