Kansas sex offender charged in knife attack on woman

SEDGWICK COUNTY —A registered Kansas sex offender accused in violent knife attack made his first court appearance on Thursday. Jeffrey Elam, 27, was charged with attempted 2nd degree murder, according to the Sedgwick County District Attorney's office.

His next court date is 12/9/21. The case has been assigned to Judge Christopher Magana. Mr. Elam’s bond is $500,000.

Just after 11:30p.m. November 28,  police responded to reports of a stabbing in the 100 block of North St. Francis in Wichita, according to a social media report from police.

When officers arrived, they located a 22-year-old woman with a stab wound to her abdomen.

EMS transported her to an area hospital for treatment of serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The investigation revealed the victim was walking to her vehicle and was approached and stabbed by a suspect later identified as Elam, who fled northbound through the alley. Police released a security camera video of him and made an arrest the following night.

Elam has previous convictions for aggravated indecent liberties with a child and is a registered Kansas sex offender, according to the KBI offender registry. The crimes occurred in Wichita in 2012 and 2013 and included a 5-year-old victim. A jury convicted him of the crimes in 2014. Elam is due back in court December 9. He remains jailed on a bond is $500,000.
