The historic High-Rise Apartments in Great Bend will be renovated beginning in December. Built in 1972 for low-income families, Executive Director Lynn Fleming says the Great Bend Housing Authority has received several grants to remodel all 95 studio and one-bedroom apartments.

“We have low-income housing tax credits, a housing trust fund, federal home loan bank funds, and state and historic federal tax credits. It’s a good position to be in to have so many grants you can’t keep track of it, so we are very fortunate,” says Fleming.

Fleming says each apartment will have the kitchens and bathrooms completely gutted, replacing cabinets and fixtures.

“You know, it’s a 50-year-old building, so it needs a lot of love. Not much has been done over the years. The porcelain is worn off the sinks; the particle board cabinets are in bad shape, so it just needs a lot of love,” says Fleming.

Fleming explained that she closed the waitlist months ago, so there would be available apartments for the renters to move into while their unit is being renovated temporarily.

Construction is scheduled to begin in December with Hutton Construction overseeing the job. The remodeling is estimated to take 18 months, with a cost of over $10 million.
