SHAWNEE COUNTY —Law enforcement authorities are investigating the cause of a house fire in Topeka.

Just before 5a.m. Wednesday, crews responded to the fire in a home at 4031 SE Mercier Street, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.

When they arrived, firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the split level house and began an offensive fire attack.

A search of the single family dwelling revealed there were no occupants at home at the time of the fire.

Investigators determine the fire cause to be intentionally set, according to Harrison. The estimated dollar loss – $45,000.00; of which $40,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $5,000.00 associated with contents loss.  Working smoke detectors were not located within the home, according to Harrison.
