KANSAS CITY —One person died in an accident just before 10:30a.m. Wednesday in Kansas City.
A Buick LeSabre was southbound on 71 Highway at a high rate of speed, according to KCPD Captain Corey Carlisle.
Just south of Meyer Street, the Buick traveled off the roadway to the left, traveling through the grassy median and struck a large tree head on.
The Buick was immediately engulfed in fire which destroyed the entire vehicle. The driver and sole occupant of the Buick was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Southbound 71 Highway was completely closed to all traffic at 63rd Street for approximately three hours. Police have not released the name of the victim. The accident remains under investigation.
This is 84th fatality crash in KCMO this year compared to 78 at this time last year, according to Carlisle.
