DOUGLAS COUNTY — A police officer was fortunately not injured after a teen drove head-on into his patrol car over the weekend, according to the Lawrence Police Department.
The officer was responding to a call about a fight between a father and his son about 11:30 May 30.
As the officer approached the house, he saw headlights pointing right at him, tried to swerve into a driveway, but was hit by the 17-year-old suspect’s car.
After the crash, officers learned the teen was leaving home because his father was trying to stop his son from huffing butane. He apparently got into his car and drove into his father’s parked truck before driving into the officer’s patrol vehicle. Another car on the street was also damaged by the suspect’s car.
The teen suspect was arrested at the scene and taken to Lawrence Memorial Hospital before being transported to Douglas County Juvenile Detention Center.
He’ll face several charges including Aggravated Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer. The patrol vehicle has significant damage and was towed away. The officer was shaken – but continued working after the incident.
