KCPD: Westport Security officer shot, killed man firing shots

KANSAS CITY—Detectives continue investigating the deadly mass shooting near the Westport Entertainment District in Kansas City early Sunday.

According to KCPD Officer Alayna Gonzalez, indications are the identified shooting victim 24-year-old Jahquan M. Robinson was actively shooting when Westport security arrived on scene. The security officer fired shots that struck Robinson.

Just before 1:30a.m. Sunday, police near the Westport Entertainment District responded to the sound of gun fire near the intersection of Westport and Broadway, according to Sheriff Daryl Forte'

First responders found multiple shooting victims. EMS responded and treated victims for non-life-threatening injuries. EMS and private vehicle transported six victims to area hospital where Robinson was pronounced deceased. 

A preliminary investigation indicated the shooting was the result of a disturbance that escalated into gunfire, according to the KCPD.

Police believe there are many witnesses since a large crowd near the scene of the shooting dispersed when shots were fired.
