Sheriff: Kan. man traveling 100mph in 55mph zone dies in crash

COWLEY COUNTY —One person died in an accident just after 8p.m. Thursday in Cowley County.

According to Sheriff Dave Faletti, a  Kawasaki ZH2 driven by Chase Roberts, 20, Arkansas City was northbound from N. Summit and the 26,000 Block of U.S. 77 Highway in the right most lane.

The motorcycle conducted a lane change into the left most lane and began to accelerate rapidly. Witnesses estimated that the motorcycle was traveling approximately 70 mph to 100mph in a 55mph zone.

The motorcycle struck a 2003 Lexus LS driven by 41-year-old Daniel Garcia of Arkansas City, that had been stopped at the stop sign at the bypass and was crossing the north bound lanes to turn south onto N. Summit towards Arkansas City.

The driver of the motorcycle was ejected from the vehicle, and it became fully engulfed in flames. Arkansas City Fire/EMS pronounced Roberts dead at the scene.  There were no other injuries. The sheriff's office released no additional details.
