Kansas woman dies in crash after teen driver fell asleep

JOHNSON COUNTY, Mo., —A Kansas woman and a man from Colorado died in an accident just before 1 p.m. Monday in Johnson County, Missouri.

The Missouri State Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Chevy Silverado driven by a 16-year-old boy from Warrensburg was eastbound on U.S. 50 at Business 50 in Warrensburg, Missouri.

The driver fell asleep. The pickup traveled off the right side of the road, reentered the road, crossed Business 50, became airborne and struck  a northbound 2022 Acura RDX driven by Patricia L. Moffett 83, Overland Park, who was stopped at intersection.

The impact pushed the Acura into a road sign. Moffett and a passenger Derek B. Moffett, 55, Erie, Colorado, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Life-Flight transported two other passengers in the Acura identified as  Alexandria B. Moffett, 19, and a 16-year-old girl both from Erie, Colorado to Research Medical Center. A private vehicle transported the 16-year-old pickup driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, to Western Missouri Medical Center, according to the MSHP.
