Kan. officer fired shot after assault suspect reached for a gun

JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating an officer shooting during a standoff in Johnson County.

 Just after 2 a.m. Tuesday, police responded to the 6100 block of Marty reference a physical altercation, according to a media release.

Officers determined the altercation between man and woman acquaintances resulted in serious bodily harm to a woman.

The victim was able to exit the apartment, called 911 and informed police the man was armed. EMS transported her a local hospital with serious non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers formed a perimeter outside the apartment. At one point, the suspect exited the apartment building, and when ordered to stop, he reached into his waistband and displayed what appeared to be a firearm.

An officer fired one round at the suspect, who retreated into the apartment building through a second door.

After several hours of negotiations, the suspect exited the apartment and was taken into custody without incident. The suspect was uninjured. A firearm was recovered on the premises. Police have not released the suspect's name or possible charges.
