The Kansas Department of Transportation stopped by in Great Bend
recently and evaluated the city’s dilemma of motorists illegally turning into
McDonald’s at 10th and Harrison Street. City Administrator Kendal
Francis says KDOT provided a few options to help correct the problem, with some
of the options more labor-intensive than others. For now, Great Bend will
review KDOT’s proposals and keep looking into what is best at an awkward
turning point.
"Some solutions might not be my preference, but as we start having those discussions we will need to incorporate McDonald's into it and try to work through the best solution," Francis said.
For years, the City of Great Bend has encountered problems with westbound
traffic on 10th Street wanting to turn into McDonald’s. While it is legal to
turn into McDonald’s coming from the west, it is not legal to cross into the
opposite side’s turning lane to enter. Traffic can get clogged up when
westbound motorists on 10th Street cross the double yellow lines
into the other side’s turning lane.
Francis says one thing the city does plan on doing is repainting the lines and
directional arrows in that area. 
"Time, weather, sand and dirt have really rubbed that paint off and it is pretty faded," said Francis. "We thought if we could freshen it up so drivers can better see what they should be doing it will help in the educational side of it."
City engineers suggested mounting flexible delineators on the dividing line
that would essentially serve as flags, keeping westbound traffic from illegally
crossing into the eastbound turning lane.
