TOPEKA —Two people escaped a Kansas house fire early Saturday morning.

Just after midnight, fire crews responded to a structure fire located at 2511 SE Virginia Avenue in Topeka, according to Deputy Chief Kelly Adams.

Upon arrival, fire crews found smoke and flames coming from the single story wood frame residential structure. Firefighters began an offensive fire attack, keeping it confined to the structure of fire origin. Two occupants had self-evacuated prior to the fire departments arrival.

An investigation determined the fire cause to be accidental, associated with the improper use of a wood burning stove. Estimated dollar loss  $18,000.00; of which $17,000.00 is associated with structural loss and $1,000.00 associated with contents loss. Fire crews found no working smoke detectors in the residence, according to Adams.
