IRVING, Texas (AP) — NCAA rushing leader Chuba Hubbard from Oklahoma State has been named the Big 12 offensive player of the year. Big 12 sacks leader James Lynch from Baylor was named the top defensive player. The Big 12 awards released Wednesday were determined by a vote of the league's 10 coaches. Baylor coach Matt Rhule was chosen by his peers as the top coach after his No. 8 Bears went from 11 losses two years ago to 11 wins and a spot in this year's Big 12 championship game. Oklahoma graduate transfer quarterback Jalen Hurts was named the league's offensive newcomer of the year.

WACO, Texas (AP) — Baylor coach Matt Rhule and Oklahoma’s Lincoln Riley took over their teams under drastically different circumstances. Rhule left Temple for Baylor three years ago in the aftermath of a scandal that left the Bears with a depleted roster. Riley was the hand-picked successor when 10-time Big 12 champion coach Bob Stoops retired in 2017. The two will coach against each other in the Big 12 championship game Saturday. Both teams are 11-1 and the winner could possibly get in the four-team College Football Playoff when pairings are announced Sunday.

CHICAGO (AP) — Jalen Coleman-Lands scored eight of his 18 points in overtime to lead DePaul to a 65-60 win over Texas Tech. DePaul (9-0) is off to its best start since the 1986-87 season where the Blue Demons started 16-0.

STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) — With Georgetown missing two of its top five scorers, Mac McClung stepped up and scored a season-high 33 points to help the Hoyas hand Oklahoma State its first loss of the season, 81-74. McClung connected on 12 of 21 shots, including 4 of 8 from 3-point range. Omer Yurtseven added 19 points and nine rebounds for the Hoyas.

AMES, Iowa (AP) — Senior Michael Jacobson scored 19 points on 8 of 9 shooting and Iowa State beat Kansas City 79-61. Tyrese Haliburton added 19 points and seven assists for the Cyclones, who won despite another frigid night from beyond the arc. Iowa State finished just 5 of 21 on 3s. Kansas City (5-5) got as close as 57-54 with 6:37 left. The Cyclones responded with six quick points, and Rasir Bolton's 3-point dunk pushed their lead to 69-58, and Haliburton and Bolton followed with 3 that sealed a win that was much uglier than the final score suggested.

ATLANTA (AP) — Court records show Kansas City Chiefs running back LeSean McCoy has settled a lawsuit filed against him by his former girlfriend. Delicia Cordon had sued McCoy last year, saying he failed to protect her from a violent July 2018 home invasion at a house he owned just outside Atlanta. McCoy was not at the home during the attack. He played for the Buffalo Bills at the time. The parties notified the court last month that they had resolved the lawsuit. The terms of the settlement are not disclosed in online court records. A judge on Wednesday ordered the case closed.

National Headlines

UNDATED (AP) — Championship weekend is coming up in college football. AP College Fooball Writer Ralph Russo notes that it rarely produces the type of upsets that throw the national championship race into turmoil. Ohio State, LSU and Clemson are the top teams in the playoff rankings. Russo says all three could lose this weekend and still make the four-team playoff. He is picking Baylor to upset Oklahoma in the Big 12 title game on Saturday. Bowl announcements will come on Sunday.

UNDATED (AP) — Ohio State will go into championship weekend as the top team in the College Football Playoff selection committee’s rankings, followed by LSU, Clemson and Georgia. Utah was fifth, Oklahoma sixth and Baylor seventh in the committee’s second-to-last top 25. The final rankings that set the pairings for the national semifinals come out Sunday after each FBS conference plays a championship game this weekend.

PHILADELPHIA (AP) — The Philadelphia Phillies hope they’ve bolstered their starting rotation by adding Zack Wheeler. Two people familiar with the deal tell The Associated Press that the free-agent right-hander has accepted a five-year, $118 contract with the Phillies. Wheeler spent his first seven seasons with the Mets and was 11-8 with a 3.96 ERA for New York this year.

NEW YORK (AP) — A hedge fund manager whose company paid $1.8 billion in U.S. criminal and civil settlements is in negotiations to increase his stake in the New York Mets. The ballclub left open the possibility Steven Cohen eventually could become controlling owner in a deal with Sterling Partners. Fred Wilpon would be allowed to remain as controlling owner and chief executive officer for five years, while Jeff Wilpon would remain as CEO.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) — St. Petersburg Mayor Rick Kriseman says the city will not allow the Tampa Bay Rays to pursue a plan to split home games between new stadiums that would be built in Florida and Montreal. Kriseman informed the City Council in a memo today that he and the team agree that the “best path forward” is to abide by an existing contract that requires the Rays to play at Tropicana Field through 2027. Principal owner Stuart Sternberg has been trying to garner support for a replacement to Tropicana Field for nearly a decade and envisions building two open-air stadiums to house the team as a viable solution.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Southern California has decided to retain Clay Helton, extending the head coach’s 4 ½-year tenure atop the West Coast’s winningest college football program. New athletic director Mike Bohn announced the decision four days after the No. 24 Trojans missed out on a trip to the conference title game when they finished one game behind No. 5 Utah in the Pac-12 South. Southern Cal is 8-4 this season and finished 7-2 in the Pac-12.
