JOHNSON COUNTY (AP) —The Kansas City area helped Democrats to their first US Senate victory in 94 years.
Adam Hamilton, the first Democrat to win a Senate race in Kansas since 1932, defeated Republican Sen. Roger Marshall largely because of support in the Kansas City area, where he's the founding pastor of the 25,000-member Church of the Resurrection, the nation’s largest United Methodist congregation.
Hamilton received more than 60% of the vote in Johnson and Wyandotte counties. In Kansas' other 103 counties, Marshall prevailed by a comfortable margin. Hamilton did win in three southwest Kansas counties.
