Kan. shooting suspect ingested unknown substance during arrest

WICHITA, Kan. - Wichita Police have arrested a 31-year-old male of Wichita in connection with the shooting that occurred this morning, leaving one man injured. 

On Jun 16, 7:11 a.m., Sedgwick County Emergency Communications received a call of a shooting in the 2300 block of N Jackson. 

Wichita police, along with Sedgwick County EMS and the Wichita Fire Department, responded to the scene and located a 51-year-old male with a single gunshot wound. The victim was transported to an area hospital in critical condition, and he is expected to survive. 

While at the scene, investigators identified a suspect vehicle and located that vehicle utilizing FLOCK license plate reader technology. 

Officers with the Violent Crime Response Team contacted the male suspect and took him into custody. As officers were attempting to detain the male, he ingested an unknown substance in a small bag. 

Sedgwick County EMS was requested and transported the male to an area hospital. While being transported, the male became unresponsive. The suspect remains in extremely critical condition. 

When the male was arrested, he was in possession of a firearm.
