Just after 7a.m. Thursday, police were dispatched to a welfare check in the area of 600 W. 30th Street South in Wichita regarding two individuals slumped over in a white Chevy Silverado, according to Officer Kris Gupilan.
A Wichita Traffic Motor Officer arrived on the scene and contacted the driver, later identified as Nichilas Grady Shugart, 41, of Wichita, who then accelerated and drove away, striking and running over the officer’s lower leg.
The Kansas Highway Patrol reported Wichita Police were in pursuit of a Silverado driven by Shugart westbound in the 2400 Block of 15th Street.
The Silverado ran the stop sign at North Meridan and struck a northbound 2000 Dodge Caravan driven by Alicia Reico, 51, Wichita, on the the right front quarter panel.
EMS transported the Wichita Traffic Motor officer and Reico to a local hospital. Both had non-life-threatening injuries. The officer is being released from the hospital, according to Gupilan.
Police arrested Shugart on requested charges of aggravated. battery, failure to stop at an accident, attempt to elude law enforcement and driving while license canceled of suspended, according to online jail records. Police also arrested a passenger in the pickup 27-year-old Odessa Silcott of Wichita, on requested charges of Possession of Narcotics, Possession of a Controlled Substance, Distribute Controlled Substance, Attempted possession of a Hallucinogenic Drug, and a Probation Violation.
