SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of a woman who had only been in custody since Tuesday.
Just after 1030 a.m. Friday, an inmate was found unresponsive by her cellmate in Pod 21 of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility, according Sheriff's Lt. Nathan Gibbs.
Detention Staff and Medical Staff immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until emergency medical services (E.M.S.) arrived.
The inmate was treated by E.M.S. and transported to a local hospital for treatment. Just before noon, she was pronounced deceased, according to Gibbs. Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigations and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (K.B.I.) were contacted. Sheriff Investigations processed the scene. The preliminary cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.
The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since September 19, on requested charges of for two counts of contempt of court through the City of Wichita.
The sheriff's office did not release the inmate's name at the request of the family. This is the sixth in-custody death this year.
