Kan. man convicted of murder killed in crash during KHP chase

LYON COUNTY—One person died in an accident during a law enforcement pursuit just before 10:30p.m. Saturday in Lyon County.

Kansas Highway Patrol was northbound on Interstate 35 just south of the Emporia exit pursing a 2017 Chevy Malibu driven by Adonis Keshawn Isaiah Dailey, 22, Wichita.

The car rear-ended a trailer pulled by a 1999 Freightliner driven by Gabino Garcia, 61, Magnolia, South Carolina. After striking the trailer the car struck the median barrier wall multiple times.

A passenger in the Chevy identified as Kejuan Cortez Shugart, 27, Wichita, was pronounced dead at the scene. EMS transported Dailey to Stomont Vail in Topeka. Garcia was not injured. All three were properly restrained, according to the KHP.

Shugart had previous convictions for second degree murder and robbery in 2013, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections. Dailey was   convicted in 2020 for Flee and elude law enforcement with five or more previous violations.
