Police: Explosive device intentionally placed in car

TOPEKA—Law enforcement authorities are investigating after   a car was badly damaged after an explosive device was placed inside the vehicle.

Just after 5p.m. Tuesday, police responded to an apartment complex at 4140 SW 6th Avenue in Topeka after a suspicious item found in a parked vehicle on the west end of the property, according to Lt. Ron Ekis.

Police asked the Topeka Fire Department Investigation Unit to assist with the investigation involving the detonated IED in the vehicle. 

The Topeka Police Department Bomb Unit determined the scene to be safe and assisted with the investigation. They learned that an explosive device had been intentionally placed in the car’s passenger compartment, according to Fire Marshal Todd Harrison.  A search of the area revealed no other devices. There were no injuries reported.

Estimated damage is being listed at approximately $1500.00 and was contained to the vehicle, according to Harrison.
