SUV fled after crash that killed Kansas woman

JOHNSON COUNTY —One person died in an accident just before 6p.m. Tuesday in Johnson County.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 1969 Chevy passenger car driven by Fred L. Bybee, 81, Lenexa, was merging onto northbound Interstate 35 from 75th Street. 

The car rear-ended a 1997 Chevy SUV that slowed for traffic ahead. After impact the car traveled off the road to the right, struck and struck the barrier wall. The SUV fled the scene of the collision.

A passenger in the car identified as Sharon F. Bybee, 79, Lenexa, was pronounced dead at the scene and was transported to the Johnson County Coroner's Office.  EMS transported Fred Bybee to Overland Park Regional. The occupants of the car were properly restrained, according to the KHP. The accident remains under investigation.
