Fire Marshal determines cause of SW Kansas home explosion

FINNEY COUNTY —As the investigation into the Saturday home explosion in Garden City continues,  the State Fire Marshal and Garden City Fire Department Investigators have determined that the explosion was caused by a natural gas leak, according to a media release from the fire department.

The gas leak was ignited when the victim turned on the stove. The issue was isolated to the gas line inside the home.

Just after 7p.m. on Saturday, the Garden City Fire Department was dispatched to the report of an explosion at 802 West Fair Street, Garden City.

Upon arrival, fire personnel found one home that had significant damage due to an explosion with a large debris field surrounding the site. One victim was treated and transported by Finney County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to St. Catherine Hospital. 

The victim is now in a Wichita hospital, according to the fire department. Officials did not release any  updated information on the condition of the victim.
