WABAUNSEE COUNTY — A horse died after being struck by a car early Friday in Wabaunsee County, according to a social media report from Wabaunsee County Sheriff Eric Kirsch.

The accident occurred just after 5:30a.m. on Kansas 4 highway at Wakarusa Road, just northeast of the city of Eskridge.

The sheriff asked for help burying the horse. "Friends I can't move this magnificent animal by myself. I cannot and will not leave him here either. Need some help. If you have the right equipment, I'd kindly be obliged if any citizen could help me transfer this animal from the roadside with the dignity he deserves."

The sheriff later offered appreciation for the assistance. "Enormous thanks to Mr. John Bozarth and Don Rush of mighty Eskridge Kansas who answered the call to help bury a horse with the dignity it deserved."

"Tough morning yet made better as we live amongst tough, good people in this special place."

Two other horses were also reported to have been loose in the same area, according to the sheriff. They were reported to have been corralled and moved to a safe location.

The car that struck the horse was seriously damaged, according to the sheriff. The driver and passengers were not injured.
