SEDGWICK COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating the death of an inmate in the dorm at the Sedgwick County Department of Corrections Adult Residential and Work Release Program.

Just after 5:30 a.m. New Year's Day, a corrections officer was doing a dorm check according to a news release. One of the residential clients told the officer that the 22-year-old man was not doing well.

The officer found the man unresponsive. Corrections staff and EMS attempted life-saving measures but he was pronounced deceased.

The inmate, whose name has not been released, had been convicted of burglary and theft. He was court-assigned to the adult residential facility on Dec. 20.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations, Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division and the District Coroner’s Office are in charge of the investigation, according to the release.
