JOHNSON COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a shooting that sent a girl to the hospital for treatment.
Just before 10p.m. Friday, police were dispatched to the report of a shooting in the area of 91st Street and Pflumm in Lenexa, according to a media release.
The victim, later learned to be a 16-year-old girl, told dispatchers that she was in a vehicle that was continuing to drive away from the area of the shooting.
A few moments later, officers located the vehicle with the victim at 95th Street and Interstate 35 highway. She had been shot in the face and officers began first aid treatment until paramedics arrived.
EMS then transported her to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. During the investigation, it was learned that she was seated in the front passenger seat of a vehicle, which was being driven by another 16-year-old girl.
A 15-year-old boy in the back seat was armed with a handgun. Both girls know they boy. As the they were were driving, the handgun was fired, striking the girl in the face. The vehicle continued to drive for a short time before pulling over.
The boy who fired the gun exited the vehicle and fled the scene prior to officers arrival.
A few hours later, a parent brought the boy to the Lenexa Police Department. Police took him into custody and transported him to the Johnson County Juvenile Detention Center. This case will be forwarded to the Johnson County District Attorneys' Office.
