Man serving time for kidnapping, murder dies in Kan. prison

LANSING, Kansas. – Lansing Correctional Facility (LCF) resident Eric Avila, 51, died Saturday, February 24, 2024. He was found unresponsive in his cell. Avila was pronounced deceased by local emergency medical service personnel following attempts at life-saving measures. The cause of death is pending the results of an independent autopsy.

Avila was serving a 249-month sentence for convictions of Kidnapping and Second Degree Murder in Sedgwick County.

Per protocol, when a resident dies in the custody of the KDOC, the death is under investigation by the KDOC and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation. The investigation is currently ongoing.
