MONTGOMERY COUNTY—Law enforcement authorities are investigating a registered Kansas offender on new charges after a standoff.
Just before noon Dec. 10, police requested the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) at 1701 N. 10th St Apt# 44 Independence, Kansas, according to Sheriff Ron Wade.
Officers responded after learning a wanted suspect identified as 47-year-old Kyle Harris of Independence, Kansas was there. Harris had felony aggravated offender registration warrants, according to the sheriff's office.
Police attempted to call Harris out but Harris refused. Officers were given information that Harris was hiding under a bed and possibly had weapons.
The SERT team started their armed and barricade subject protocol and established a perimeter around the apartment to contain Harris inside. The SERT team with the assistance of Montgomery County Emergency Management drone team and the use of the SERT team robot were able to clear the apartment and learn that Harris was hiding under the bed.
Deputies entered the apartment and took into custody without further incident. Harris was removed from the apartment, evaluated by Independence EMS and transported by Independence EMS to Labette Health in Independence for evaluation.
Later Harris was transported to the Montgomery County Department of Corrections where he was booked on requested charges included in felony warrants.
Harris has been listed as a registered offender since June of 2016 on a felony drug distribution conviction. He also has convictions for theft and criminal use of a weapon, according to the Kansas Dept. of Corrections.
