The Russell County Health Department received notification today confirming the first confirmed positive case of COVID-19 who resides in Russell County.

The health department is working closely with the Kansas Department of Health and Environment during this time.

This person has completed their isolation at home due to the fact the test was collected a while back.

During that time, the person remained home and is symptom-free.

Any contact with this person has been identified and contacted by the health department.

No further information will be provided to protect the identity of this person.

If you develop symptoms of COVID-19 (i.e. fever, cough, shortness of breath, loss of taste and/or smell, etc.) or are a potential direct contact of someone with a laboratory-confirmed case of COVID-19:

  1. Stay home away from others in order to prevent spreading the virus.
  2. Contact your health care provider for an appointment to be tested; do not go to the hospital or doctor's office without calling first.

Continue to be vigilant about this virus. Wash your hands frequently, wear a mask when out in public, cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing, and stay home when ill.

In addition to the above, practice social distancing and limit unnecessary travel such as commercial activities or recreational endeavors, especially if social distancing cannot be maintained.

Do not congregate in large crowds and gatherings.

Remember, social distancing means maintaining at least a 6-foot distance and no longer than 10 minutes.
