Former KU basketball player, injured in crash, has died

LAWRENCE —Former University of Kansas basketball player Gethro Muscadin has died, according to a social media tribute from coach Bill Self and the University of New Mexico.

 In December of 2021, Muscadin was critically injured in an accident on the Kansas Turnpike in Osage County, according to the Kansas Highway Patrol.

He was a native of Haiti and played in 11 games during the 20-21 season for the Jayhawks before transferring to the University of New Mexico. The 6-foot-10 Muscadin left the Lobo basketball program in mid December 2021, according to the school's basketball web site.

Muscadin moved to the U.S. in 2006 to pursue basketball. He played at Sunrise Christian Academy and Life Prep Academy, both in Kansas, and Aspire Academy in Kentucky, where Muscadin grew into a four-star prospect that had scholarship offers from a number of high-major programs.

OSAGE COUNTY, Kan.—A former University of Kansas basketball player 21-year-old Gethro Muscadin was critically injured in an accident on the Kansas Turnpike just after 3a.m. Thursday in Osage County.

On Friday, the Kansas Highway Patrol reported a 2018 Ford passenger vehicle driven by Alaeyia Howard, 21, Wichita, was southbound on Interstate 335 in Osage County. The vehicle left the road, rolled and came to rest in a fence line. 

EMS transported Howard and Muscadin to Stormont Vail in Topeka. He was not wearing a seat belt, according to the KHP.

The crash log does not list where Muscadin was living. He is native of Haiti and played in 11 games during the 20-21 season for the Jayhawks before transferring to the University of New Mexico. The 6-foot-10 Muscadin left the Lobo basketball program earlier this month, according to the school's basketball web site.
