Bubic expected to start as Royals host the Brewers

The Barton Community College men's track and field team captured the College's 58th National team title Thursday by tying for first place of the 2021 NJCAA Outdoor National Championships held in Levelland, Texas.

Trailing by three points into the final 4x400m Relay with South Plains in third just two points behind the Cougars, Barton's second place finish in the race with the Texans winning the baton handling four trips around the oval gave the two programs the Co-National Champion fitting end to the three-day meet at 101 points.

Cloud County, who held the lead but didn't have a relay team in the finals, fell to the third spot as the defending champion from 2019 finished with 96 points.

On the women's side, Barton placed 5th overall with host South Plains winning with 110.33 points.

The championship is the 9th title for Cougar history in the outdoor season. The tie is just the second time in the NJCAA two teams have locked up for the title at the men's outdoor national championship, the first coming in 2007 between South Plains and Central Arizona.

The Cougars had three national champions during the three-day event among its fourteen scoring performances and eight personal best efforts.

<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/coke_shakwon_51of" target="_blank">Shakwon Coke</a>&nbsp;didn't need his best in capturing both of his national titles, winning the long jump at 7.58m (24-10.50) and the triple jump at 15.51m (50-10-75).&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/calvin_iii_glenith_rx7z" target="_blank">Glenith Calvin III</a>&nbsp;nearly surpassed his personal best on his first long jump attempt in giving the Cougars three more points in the event with a 7.15m (23-05.50) splash in the sand.

The sprinting duo of&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/feagin_denzel_tyu6" target="_blank">Denzel Feagin</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/boger_caleb_r97z" target="_blank">Caleb Boger</a>&nbsp;combined for 31 points in two events. Feagin was edged out at the tape by .02 seconds in the 100m as his personal best of 10.11 had to settle for runner-up while Boger placed 4th at 10.27. The duo would later go 1-2 in the 200m with Feagin winning the 200m title at 20.53 just ahead of Boger's 20.58.

To start Thursday's final day of competition, the pair were joined by&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/williamson_almighty_0zq3" target="_blank">Almighty Williamson</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/o-bryant_jevon_3wh6" target="_blank">Jevon O'Bryant</a>&nbsp;to again be edged out at the finish line by .04 seconds as the tandem's program 8th best time of 39.51 had to settle for second place.

Concluding the meet was the season best effort of the 4x400m relay team as O'Bryant,&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/bradford_jr._telron_jshc" target="_blank">Telron Bradford Jr.</a>, Boger, and&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/mtrack/2020-21/bios/felix_gamali_utbl" target="_blank">Gamali Felix</a>&nbsp;clocked a 3:07.19 in a half of a second behind South Plains' winning time of 3:06.71.

Men's Track and Field captures Barton's 58th National Title

The Barton Community College women's track and field team won three events this past week in placing 5th at the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Championships hosted by South Plains College in Levelland, Texas.

The Cougars had fifteen scoring performances during the three-day event, resetting six personal best efforts in scoring 76 total points, just five points out of third place. South Plains won the title with 110.33 points with New Mexico Junior College close behind at 108 points. Iowa Central Community College won the battle for third place at 81 points, three points ahead of in-state foe Iowa Western Community College's 78 points and two ahead of the Cougars. Region VI member Cloud County Community College finished in sixth with 72 points as the rest of the twenty-six team total field were significantly down points achieved chart.

Two of Barton's national champions came on the track with&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wtrack/2020-21/bios/green_kayan_xvmb" target="_blank">Kayan Green</a>&nbsp;taking the 800m title in 2:10.55 with&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wtrack/2020-21/bios/graham_lashanna_ytw5" target="_blank">Lashanna Graham</a>&nbsp;winning the 400m hurdles in 58.61. Graham also added a 3rd place finish in the 400m at 54.11 with the pair also helping lead the 4x400m relay team joined by&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wtrack/2020-21/bios/dillon_jayda_60k0" target="_blank">Jayda Dillon</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wtrack/2020-21/bios/brown_sasha_bbzv" target="_blank">Sasha Brown</a>&nbsp;to a fifth place finish at 3:47.83.

Continuing her challenge of the program shot put record,&nbsp;<a href="http://bartoncc.prestosports.com/sports/wtrack/2020-21/bios/da_silva_ana_k00q" target="_blank">Ana Da Silva</a>&nbsp;came up nine inches shy of the top mark but did improve her personal and 2nd best ever throw to 16.21m (53-02.25) in closing out her Barton career with the national title.

Barton women place 5th at National Track and Field Championships

Fresh off a doubleheader last Friday against each other, Great Bend High School and Goddard-Eisenhower High School baseball teams will match up Tuesday, May 18 in the Regional #4 hosted by Maize South. Goddard-Eisenhower defeated the Panthers 6-0 and 14-3 to close out the regular season.

The two teams will square off at 2 p.m. Tuesday for the 5A Regional. Host Maize South will face Newton at 3:30 p.m. The winner of the two semifinal games will play at 5 p.m. in the Regional Championship.&nbsp;

Panther baseball gets rematch with Goddard-Eisenhower in Regionals

Finishing the season 7-13, the Great Bend High School softball team will compete in the Valley Center Regional Tuesday, May 18.

The Lady Panthers will play at 3 p.m. Tuesday against host Valley Center (15-5).

The other match-up pairs Maize High School and Emporia at 4:30 p.m.

If Great Bend defeats Valley Center, the Panthers would play in the Regional Championship at 6 p.m.

Great Bend softball heads to Valley Center for Regionals

CHICAGO — Wade Davis bounced a wild pitch that allowed José Abreu to dash home with the game-ending run, and the Chicago White Sox rallied in the ninth inning to beat the Kansas City 4-3 on Sunday on a call that left the Royals fuming.

Kansas City led 3-2 when Tim Anderson doubled off Davis (0-2) leading off the ninth.

Adam Eaton sacrificed and, with the infield in, Yoán Moncada lined a run-scoring single to center. Abreu was hit just above the left elbow by an 82 mph knuckle-curve.

Yermín Mercedes singled sharply to right and Whit Merrifield, a second baseman making his second appearance in right field this season, made a throw on the fly to catcher Cam Gallagher. Moncada, sliding headfirst, was tagged out near the left shoulder.

Abreu, injured Friday in a collision with Hunter Dozier, dashed home when Davis bounced a knuckle-curve off Gallagher, and Davis' 21st pitch of the inning ricocheted about 15 feet up the first-base the line.

Gallagher retrieved the ball and made a leaping tag attempt. Abreu missed the plate with his left leg but got his left arm on the the plate just ahead of Gallagher's mitt.

Second-year big league umpire Edwin Moscoso signaled safe, and the call was upheld after a video review.

“We were talking about all his attributes,” Chicago manager Tony La Russa said of Abreu. “Now you have to add outstanding instinctive baserunning. It’s a great play.”

Royals manager Mike Matheny, though, strongly disagreed with the game-ending call.

“If we’re going to use video replay, there needs to be some accountability,” he said. "I just walked in here and had two different camera angles with this guy out — tagged before he ever even touched the plate. Very obvious. I don’t know what they’re doing, backing each other up. Whatever it is, it’s wrong.”

Matt Foster (2-1) struck out two in a perfect ninth. completing a six-hitter that gave Chicago a four-game split. The Royals had lost their previous four series, going 1-12 in that span.

Adam Eaton homered for AL Central-leading Chicago, which has not lost consecutive games since April 15-17.

Salvador Pérez, who left Saturday’s game in the eighth with left groin tightness, went 1 for 2 with a walk as the Royals' designated hitter.

Pérez hit a sacrifice fly in the first off Dylan Cease, who allowed an unearned run and three hits in 5 2/3 innings.

Chicago went ahead in the fifth when Eaton hit a two-run homer off Brady Singer, who gave up two runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings.

Kansas City took a 3-2 lead in the seventh when Aaron Bummer relieved Codi Heuer with two on, Merrifield hit a tying single and Carlos Santana followed with a sacrifice fly, a drive Eaton leaped to grab at the fence in right.

“Any way we can get a win is a win,” Eaton said. “Winning at all costs, whatever it takes.”

Abreu received treatment after the game and before the team departed for Minnesota. He did not speak with reporters.

“I know one thing, he was rubbing his knee,” La Russa said. “He’s sore. So he hit pretty hard. You can bet your fortune he’s playing tomorrow in Minnesota.”

Royals: INF Adalberto Mondesi (strained right oblique) was 2 for 3 as a DH on Saturday in his injury rehabilitation assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas. Mondesi was hurt in the final spring training game. ... RHP Kyle Zimmer (strained left trapezius) retired five of six batters, throwing 24 pitches, in his second rehab outing with Triple-A Omaha on Saturday.

For the first time since 2010, the Great Bend High School girls track &amp; field team won the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) Championship.

The Lady Panthers finished with 127 points Thursday in Liberal, outpacing second-place Dodge City with 77 points.

The Great Bend boys ended the day with 54 points, finishing 5th. Hays boys won the meet with 120 points. Sophomore Kaiden Esfeld was named the WAC boys MVP after winning the 800 Meter, 1600 and 3200.

Coach Lyles Lashley was named WAC Coach of the Year.

The event set for Saturday, May 22 is the first in a busy stretch for the top American gymnasts. The national championships are scheduled for the first weekend in June in Fort Worth, Texas, with the U.S. Olympic trials set for St. Louis at the end of next month.

Barton men's track & field team wins National Championship

DETROIT (AP) — Michael Fulmer shut down Kansas City’s ninth-inning rally for his second save, and the Detroit Tigers’ 4-3 win Thursday to extend the Royals’ losing streak to 11 games.

Detroit led 4-1 entering the ninth, but Kansas City scored twice off Gregory Soto on a groundout by Carlos Santana and an RBI single from Salvador Perez.

Fulmer relieved Soto and got a popout from Jorge Soler and struck out Andrew Benintendi swinging to end it.

“Just a ton of confidence. He’s been in big situations before,” catcher Eric Haase said about Fulmer. “It’s a little different role for him, but his stuff is the same. He’s a big-time pitcher and for him to look like he does now after everything he’s been through, it’s fantastic.”

Fulmer was the AL Rookie of the Year in 2016 and an All-Star in 2017, both as a starter, before Tommy John and knee surgeries.

The Royals led the AL Central at the start of this skid but are now 16-20.

“It’s impossible to deny the way that you feel with the compounding losses,” Kansas City manager Mike Matheny said.

Spencer Turnbull (2-2) allowed a run and six hits over 6 1/3 innings for Detroit. He walked one, struck out seven and hit a batter as the Tigers rounded out a three-game sweep.

“From what I’ve seen, that was one of his better days as far as being able to locate his pitches. Even his misses were barely misses,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said about Turnbull. “He was doing what he wanted to do with the baseball.

"Maybe he misfired here and there, but it was a really efficient, good day for him. And once we got the lead he was super aggressive, which I really like. And that put-away slider was really effective.”

Daniel Lynch (0-2) allowed four runs, three earned, in the second inning and was pulled with two outs in the third.

Turnbull departed after Nicky Lopez’s one-out single in the seventh. Alex Lange took over and got Whit Merrifield to bounce into a forceout. Lange then walked Santana to bring the tying run to the plate, but Salvador Perez bounced into a fielder’s choice to end the inning.

The Royals once again brought the tying run to the plate with one out in the eighth, but Jose Cisnero fanned Hunter Dozier and Michael A. Taylor.

“Lots of chances,” Matheny said, adding, "today we had chances for damage in the fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth and couldn’t do it.”

Kansas City threatened with runners on first and third and one out in the sixth, but Turnbull struck out Ryan O’Hearn and got Dozier on a groundout.

The Tigers scored all of their runs in the second on RBI singles by Willi Castro, JaCoby Jones and Robbie Grossman and a sacrifice fly by Akil Baddoo.

The staff features five coaches who worked with Leipold at Buffalo and five coaches who were already on the Kansas coaching staff.&nbsp;

In his very first season at Buffalo in 2015, Borland’s defense scored a school-record seven defensive touchdowns to rank second in the nation. He also directed the 2019 defense to one of the best seasons in school history. That unit ranked seventh in the nation in total defense and led the MAC.&nbsp; Borland spent 21 seasons at Wisconsin-Whitewater, prior to his time at Buffalo. He is a member of the Wisconsin Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame. He played collegiately at Morningside College in Iowa, where he was a defensive back and team captain. Leipold on Borland:&nbsp;“I’ve coached with Brian by my side for more than a decade, and I’m very happy he’ll be my side here at Kansas as well. He has directed some dominant defenses throughout his career, and I know he is eager to get things going here. Brian has ties to this area, having coached at Baker University, and will undoubtedly do great things here in Lawrence. There are obviously some very talented offenses in the Big 12, and I know Brian and our staff will be up to the challenge each week.” Defensive Line Coach Kwahn Drake Drake is preparing for his third season with the Jayhawks after two strong years with the Kansas defensive line. In his first year, Jelani Brown earned all-conference honors, while Sam Burt earned All-Academic honors from the conference. Last season, defensive end Caleb Sampson was one of just two players on the roster to start all nine games on defense.&nbsp;Drake has also coached at Colorado, Eastern Illinois, Memphis and Tulane, prior to his time at Kansas. He also coached high school football in Louisiana prior to beginning his career as a college coach. Leipold on Drake:&nbsp;“Kwahn has done great job developing talent on the defensive line and making that group a strength of our team. He is an energetic and passionate coach, who always gets the best out of the players at his position. We have a lot of young players with great potential on the defensive line, and it’s imperative Kwahn continues to develop them and work with them. He is going to be a great fit with what Brian Borland does on defense.” Offensive Line Coach Scott Fuchs A 26-year veteran of coaching, Fuchs (pronounced Fooks, rhymes with books) spent the past two seasons at Buffalo with Leipold as the team’s offensive line coach. He also coached with Leipold at Nebraska-Omaha from 2004-2006. In 2020 at Buffalo, Fuchs was named a finalist for the FootballScoop Offensive Line Coach of the Year Award and was also a nominee for the Broyles Award, given to the top assistant coach in college football.&nbsp; In both 2019 and 2020, the offensive line at Buffalo was named a semifinalist for the Joe Moore Award, given to the best offensive line unit in the country. Fuchs has also spent time at Wyoming and North Dakota State, where he also earned a national championship as a player.&nbsp; Leipold on Fuchs:&nbsp;“Scott is a dynamic coach, who has developed elite offensive linemen in his career wherever he has been. I’ve coached with him at Buffalo and Nebraska-Omaha, and I’m thrilled he’s here in Kansas with us. His offensive lines have been strong and well-coached, and that’s what I’m looking forward to here.” Cornerbacks Coach Chevis Jackson: After coaching Karon Prunty to Freshman All-America honors in 2020, Jackson is preparing for his third season with the Jayhawks in 2021. Prunty started all nine games as a true freshman for the Jayhawks last year and tied for the freshmen national lead with 10 pass breakups. In his first year at Kansas, Hasan Defense earned all-conference honors after starting all 12 games and breaking up nine passes.&nbsp; Jackson coached at Ball State prior to arrival at Kansas, and has also spent time as a graduate assistant at LSU and South Alabama. As a player at LSU, he won a national championship with the Tigers. Leipold on Jackson:&nbsp;“The cornerbacks group is another position group on this team with exciting young talent. Chevis has stood out in his recruiting and development since joining the staff, and that will no doubt continue moving forward. A former NFL player at the position and a national champion in college, Chevis understands what’s needed for team success and personal development. We’re thrilled to have Chevis on staff.” Wide Receivers Coach Emmett Jones Jones will prepare for his third season in Lawrence as the wide receivers coach. Jones was originally hired prior to the 2019 season, and has had a strong start to his tenure as a Kansas coach. He had two players earn all-conference honors in 2019, and then led a third – Kwamie Lassiter II – to additional conference honors.&nbsp; An accomplished recruiter with deep ties to the state of Texas, Jones spent four seasons at Texas Tech prior to his time at Kansas. He also has extensive experience coaching in the high school ranks of Texas, serving as the head coach at South Oak Cliff High School.&nbsp; Leipold on Jones:&nbsp;“We are very excited to keep Emmett on staff. He did a tremendous job leading this program during the spring and made it a productive month for the student-athletes. It’s extremely obvious after talking to people here that Emmett brought great energy to every practice and pushed this program in the right direction. He is an excellent wide receivers coach and recruiter, and I am very excited about having the opportunity to coach with him.” Offensive Coordinator Andy Kotelnicki A veteran offensive coach, who has worked with Coach Lance Leipold at Buffalo and Wisconsin-Whitewater, Kotelnicki (pronounced Co-Till-Nicki) directed one of the prolific offenses in school history last season at Buffalo. He was named one of four finalists for FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year Award in 2020 after the Bulls led the nation in rushing offense.&nbsp; Kotelnicki served as the offensive coordinator for two national championship teams at Wisconsin-Whitewater and helped the Warhawks go 30-0 in his two seasons with the program.&nbsp; Leipold on Kotelnicki:&nbsp;“Andy is someone who I know very well since our first days together at Wisconsin-Whitewater. He does an excellent job leading our offense and maximizing the strengths of our team each season. He is a smart and detailed coach, who has guided some very productive offenses throughout his career. Our guys are really going to enjoy being coached by Andy because he relates with his players so well. He is going to do a great job in this role, and I’m excited for him.” Special Teams Coordinator Jake Schoonover Schoonover became the special teams coordinator for Kansas in February, and will continue in his role under Leipold. Schoonover is an accomplished special teams coach, who spent the past three seasons at Bowling Green. Schoonover’s special teams units at Bowling Green were among some of the best in the MAC, as the unit in 2020 ranked second in the conference in kickoff returns and fourth in punt returns.&nbsp; He also coached special teams at Illinois State for five seasons before joining Bowling Green. Under his direction at Illinois State, punter CJ Laros established a new school single-season record in yards per punt at 40.6. Schoonover played collegiately locally at Missouri Western State.&nbsp; Leipold on Schoonover:&nbsp;“Special Teams is an incredibly important part of what we do and how we attain success, and Jake has an excellent track record of leading good special teams units. He began putting his fingerprints on the special teams this spring, and we certainly want to continue that momentum into next season. Jake is a meticulous coach, who will have a detailed plan on how we want to operate on special teams.” Linebackers coach Chris Simpson Simpson arrives at Kansas after spending six seasons as an assistant coach under Leipold at Buffalo. Simpson also coached at Wisconsin-Whitewater with Leipold and was a part of the 2007 National Championship team. At Buffalo, he served as the team’s linebackers coach and was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2020. Simpson had at least one all-conference player in each of his six seasons, including middle linebacker James Patterson, who earned first-team honors last year after leading the team in tackles.&nbsp; Simpson also mentored Khalil Hodge at Buffalo, who finished his career with 421 tackles, which ranked third all-time in school history. Simpson has also coached at Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State and Nebraska-Omaha. Simpson has also been selected for an NFL Minority Coaching Internship on six occasions, including with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. Leipold on Simpson:&nbsp;“Chris did a stellar job with our linebackers at Buffalo and helped develop and recruit some very productive players. He and Coach Borland complement each other very well because of Chris’s knowledge of our scheme and history on our staff. Chris coached an all-conference player in each of his six seasons at Buffalo and has a great command of the linebacker position. Our guys are really going to enjoy playing for him.” Running Backs Coach Jonathan Wallace Wallace will enter his second season at Kansas in 2021 and will oversee the running backs for the second straight season. In his first year at Kansas, Wallace oversaw running backs Pooka Williams Jr., Velton Gardner, Daniel Hishaw and Amauri Pesek-Hickson, all of whom averaged at least 3.6 yards per carry. As true freshmen, Hishaw and Pesek-Hickson combined for more than 400 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just north of 90 carries.&nbsp; A former quarterback at Auburn, Wallace has also coached at Air Force and Bethel College, and was a graduate assistant at his alma mater following his playing career. Leipold on Jonathan Wallace:&nbsp;“Jonathan is a bright, young coach who has done a very good job developing talent in the running backs room. That is a position that will be vital to what we do on offense and I know it is in good hands with Jonathan. He is eager to learn and grow and I think he will work very well with Andy Kotelnicki. I’m very excited to have Jonathan on staff moving forward.” Quarterbacks Coach Jim Zebrowski A coach with extensive experience coaching quarterbacks, Jim Zebrowski will take over as quarterbacks coach for the Jayhawks. Zebrowski (pronounced Zuh-brow-ski) spent the past four seasons at Buffalo with Leipold, where he coached 2018 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Tyree Jackson. Prior to his time with Leipold at Buffalo, Zebrowski coached quarterbacks at Minnesota from 2011-2015, helping lead the Gophers to three-straight bowl game appearances.&nbsp; He also spent time coaching at Northern Illinois, where he coached all-conference quarterback Chandler Harnish. Zebrowski also coached with Leipold at Wisconsin-Whitewater with Leipold from 2007 to 2009. The team went 42-3 in that time and advanced to the national championship game in all three seasons, winning two. He is an excellent wide receivers coach and recruiter, and I am very excited about having the opportunity to coach with him.” Offensive Coordinator Andy Kotelnicki A veteran offensive coach, who has worked with Coach Lance Leipold at Buffalo and Wisconsin-Whitewater, Kotelnicki (pronounced Co-Till-Nicki) directed one of the prolific offenses in school history last season at Buffalo. He was named one of four finalists for FootballScoop Offensive Coordinator of the Year Award in 2020 after the Bulls led the nation in rushing offense.&nbsp; Kotelnicki served as the offensive coordinator for two national championship teams at Wisconsin-Whitewater and helped the Warhawks go 30-0 in his two seasons with the program.&nbsp; Leipold on Kotelnicki:&nbsp;“Andy is someone who I know very well since our first days together at Wisconsin-Whitewater. He does an excellent job leading our offense and maximizing the strengths of our team each season. He is a smart and detailed coach, who has guided some very productive offenses throughout his career. Our guys are really going to enjoy being coached by Andy because he relates with his players so well. He is going to do a great job in this role, and I’m excited for him.” Special Teams Coordinator Jake Schoonover Schoonover became the special teams coordinator for Kansas in February, and will continue in his role under Leipold. Schoonover is an accomplished special teams coach, who spent the past three seasons at Bowling Green. Schoonover’s special teams units at Bowling Green were among some of the best in the MAC, as the unit in 2020 ranked second in the conference in kickoff returns and fourth in punt returns.&nbsp; He also coached special teams at Illinois State for five seasons before joining Bowling Green. Under his direction at Illinois State, punter CJ Laros established a new school single-season record in yards per punt at 40.6. Schoonover played collegiately locally at Missouri Western State.&nbsp; Leipold on Schoonover:&nbsp;“Special Teams is an incredibly important part of what we do and how we attain success, and Jake has an excellent track record of leading good special teams units. He began putting his fingerprints on the special teams this spring, and we certainly want to continue that momentum into next season. Jake is a meticulous coach, who will have a detailed plan on how we want to operate on special teams.” Linebackers coach Chris Simpson Simpson arrives at Kansas after spending six seasons as an assistant coach under Leipold at Buffalo. Simpson also coached at Wisconsin-Whitewater with Leipold and was a part of the 2007 National Championship team. At Buffalo, he served as the team’s linebackers coach and was promoted to co-defensive coordinator in 2020. Simpson had at least one all-conference player in each of his six seasons, including middle linebacker James Patterson, who earned first-team honors last year after leading the team in tackles.&nbsp; Simpson also mentored Khalil Hodge at Buffalo, who finished his career with 421 tackles, which ranked third all-time in school history. Simpson has also coached at Eastern Michigan, Grand Valley State and Nebraska-Omaha. Simpson has also been selected for an NFL Minority Coaching Internship on six occasions, including with the Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys. Leipold on Simpson:&nbsp;“Chris did a stellar job with our linebackers at Buffalo and helped develop and recruit some very productive players. He and Coach Borland complement each other very well because of Chris’s knowledge of our scheme and history on our staff. Chris coached an all-conference player in each of his six seasons at Buffalo and has a great command of the linebacker position. Our guys are really going to enjoy playing for him.” Running Backs Coach Jonathan Wallace Wallace will enter his second season at Kansas in 2021 and will oversee the running backs for the second straight season. In his first year at Kansas, Wallace oversaw running backs Pooka Williams Jr., Velton Gardner, Daniel Hishaw and Amauri Pesek-Hickson, all of whom averaged at least 3.6 yards per carry. As true freshmen, Hishaw and Pesek-Hickson combined for more than 400 rushing yards and two touchdowns on just north of 90 carries.&nbsp; A former quarterback at Auburn, Wallace has also coached at Air Force and Bethel College, and was a graduate assistant at his alma mater following his playing career. Leipold on Jonathan Wallace:&nbsp;“Jonathan is a bright, young coach who has done a very good job developing talent in the running backs room. That is a position that will be vital to what we do on offense and I know it is in good hands with Jonathan. He is eager to learn and grow and I think he will work very well with Andy Kotelnicki. I’m very excited to have Jonathan on staff moving forward.” Quarterbacks Coach Jim Zebrowski A coach with extensive experience coaching quarterbacks, Jim Zebrowski will take over as quarterbacks coach for the Jayhawks. Zebrowski (pronounced Zuh-brow-ski) spent the past four seasons at Buffalo with Leipold, where he coached 2018 MAC Offensive Player of the Year, Tyree Jackson. Prior to his time with Leipold at Buffalo, Zebrowski coached quarterbacks at Minnesota from 2011-2015, helping lead the Gophers to three-straight bowl game appearances.&nbsp; He also spent time coaching at Northern Illinois, where he coached all-conference quarterback Chandler Harnish. Zebrowski also coached with Leipold at Wisconsin-Whitewater with Leipold from 2007 to 2009. The team went 42-3 in that time and advanced to the national championship game in all three seasons, winning two. After winning four of its previous five, Minnesota was locked into the third spot in the West Division with the loss. St. Louis had already nailed down the fourth spot. The teams will finish the regular season Thursday night in St. Louis.

HOUSTON (AP) — Maximiliano Urruti scored on a breakaway in the 56th minute and the Houston Dynamo beat Sporting Kansas City 1-0. Houston has only lost three times in its last 17 home matches. Kansas City had won five of its last eight matches against Houston. Urruti scored his second goal of the season. Derrick Jones stole it near midfield and dribbled down the field to find Urruti, who took one touch to get past the defense and send it by goalkeeper John Pulskamp. He helped Green Bay win the first two Super Bowls as defensive backs coach. Then he joined Vikings coach Bud Grant as Minnesota’s offensive coordinator in 1968. He held the position until 1985 and became head coach in 1986. Burns had a 55-46 record, including 3-3 in the postseason. He retired after the 1991 season. He was an astute strategist on the field and a colorful character off of it.

Statement on Shot Clock Announcement: The KSHSAA is aware the NFHS has approved the use of a 35 second shot clock for basketball beginning with the 2022-2023 season. The KSHSAA staff and Executive Board will consult with member school administrators during the next year to deter­mine the best decision for the student-athletes in Kansas. Because the rule change is a state adoption, it is an option states may want to consider for use, but not required.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN (May 10, 2021) — Beginning with the 2022-23 season, a 35-second shot clock will be permitted in high school basketball games by state association adoption. A proposal for a national rule mandating a shot clock was not approved.

A shot clock was&nbsp;among the topics discussed by the National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) Basketball Rules Committee at its annual meeting April 20-22 held virtually this year. All recommendations were subsequently approved by the NFHS Board of Directors.

Rule 2-14 states that each state association may adopt a shot clock beginning in the 2022-23 season -- according to guidelines outlined in the Basketball Rules Book -- to encourage standardization among states. Guidelines include displaying two time­pieces that are connected to a horn that is distinctive from the game-clock horn, and using an alternative timing device, such as a stopwatch at the scorer’s table, for a shot clock malfunction. The guidelines also allow for corrections to the shot clock only during the shot-clock period in which an error occurred and the officials have definite information relative to the mistake or malfunction.

“We provided the committee with a lot of information regarding the shot clock, including responses to a 46-question survey sent to states currently using a shot clock,” said Theresia Wynns, NFHS director of sports and officials and liaison to the Bas­ketball Rules Committee.

Rule 3-5-4e was added to allow players to wear head coverings for religious reasons without obtaining state association approv­al. The head covering shall not be made of abrasive or hard materials and must be attached so that it is highly unlikely to come off during play. Basketball is the sixth sport in which a rule related to the wearing of head coverings or other equipment for religious reasons has been adopted, following volleyball, field hockey, soccer, spirit and swimming.

The official signals were also modified to use the same hand signal for a player control foul and a team control foul. Officials should use Signal 36, which is a hand placed at the back of the head, for both types of fouls. Previously, a team control foul was communicated with a punch of the hand.

“It is redundant to have different signals to communicate that a foul will be charged to a member of the team in control of the ball,” Wynns said. “Officials don’t understand the need to differentiate between a player control foul and a team control foul, and many game participants, table personnel and fans don’t know the difference.”

KSHSAA releases statement on shot clock

Cabrera's two RBI singles gave him 2,878, one more than Vizquel, who played his last game in 2012 and was a coach for Cabrera and the Tigers from 2014-17.

“I feel a sense of release, because people have been waiting for me to break this record for a long time,” Cabrera said. “This has been a tough season, but this is a good night.”

Cabrera was hitting .098 on May 5, but has six hits in his last four games.

“I have been struggling so much and I wasn't helping the team win,” he said. “I know this team is better when I'm better, and now I feel like I'm helping us win games.”

Kansas City lost its 10th straight, the Royals' longest skid since they dropped 10 in a row from March 31-April 11, 2019.

“It's really hard to deal with something like this, especially with the confidence we have in ourselves,” starting pitcher Danny Duffy said. “We know we're better than this, but we've lost 10 straight games. There's no escaping that, and the only way to end it is to win.”

Casey Mize (2-3) allowed two runs on three hits and two walks in six innings. He hit one batter and struck out four. Three Detroit relievers finished, with Gregory Soto pitching the ninth for his fourth save.

Mize paid tribute to his teammate after his 14th career start.

“It was amazing to be on the field when Miguel Cabrera became the hit leader of all the players who have come out of Venezuela,” Mize said. “Being able to play on a team with him is something I'll remember for the rest of my life.”

Duffy (4-3) gave up a season-high four runs in six innings.

“This was frustrating,” Duffy said. “I wasn't finishing off my slider, and I really didn't command my off-speed stuff at all. That's a bummer, but I have to keep working on it.”

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the first. Mize hit leadoff hitter Whit Merrifield with a pitch and Carlos Santana worked a 10-pitch walk. Salvador Perez followed with an RBI double and Andrew Benintendi added a sacrifice fly.

“That was a great start, but we didn't do enough in the rest of the game,” Royals manager Mike Matheny said. “It's hard to build momentum when you get three hits in the game."

JaCoby Jones' single made it 2-1 in the second and Cabrera tied it with his first hit of the night.

Detroit added two runs in the fifth. Robbie Grossman led off with a triple into the right-field corner. After Duffy struck out Jonathan Schoop, Jeimer Candelario doubled over center fielder Jarrod Dyson’s head.

Cabrera then hit a grounder through the right side of the infield to score Candelario.

Mize thought his night was over in the sixth inning. After Santana led off with a walk and took second on Perez's single, Jorge Soler grounded into a double play on Mize's 95th pitch.

igers manager A.J. Hinch made his way to the mound, but surprised Mize by leaving him in the game.

“We were both frustrated with how many hitters he had fallen behind, and I wanted to let him know that he had to go after the next batter," Hinch said. “If he wanted it, I was going to give him the chance.”

Mize escaped the inning when Benintendi flied out on the first pitch.

“I was glad he had the confidence in me to leave me out there in that spot,” Mize said. “It made getting the out even bigger.”

The Tigers placed C Grayson Greiner (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list and purchased the contract of C Eric Haase. Detroit released RHP Franklin Perez, a key part of the trade that sent Justin Verlander to Houston, to make room for Haase on the 40-man roster.

The teams finish their series on Thursday with LHP Daniel Lynch (0-1, 18.56 ERA) starting for the Royals against Detroit’s Spencer Turnbull (1-2, 4.74).

DETROIT (AP) — Miguel Cabrera drove in two runs and surpassed Omar Vizquel for the most major league hits by a Venezuelan player, leading the Detroit Tigers past the slumping Kansas City Royals 4-2 on Wednesday night.Cabrera's two RBI singles gave him 2,878, one more than Vizquel, who played his last game in 2012 and was a coach for Cabrera and the Tigers from 2014-17.“I feel a sense of release, because people have been waiting for me to break this record for a long time,” Cabrera said. “This has been a tough season, but this is a good night.”Cabrera was hitting .098 on May 5, but has six hits in his last four games.“I have been struggling so much and I wasn't helping the team win,” he said. “I know this team is better when I'm better, and now I feel like I'm helping us win games.”Kansas City lost its 10th straight, the Royals' longest skid since they dropped 10 in a row from March 31-April 11, 2019.“It's really hard to deal with something like this, especially with the confidence we have in ourselves,” starting pitcher Danny Duffy said. “We know we're better than this, but we've lost 10 straight games. The Cougars have won nine of their last 10 games and will start the Region 6 Tournament with Coffeyville. The matchup with the Red Ravens will start at 2 p.m. If Barton wins, they will play Friday, May 14 at 1 p.m. versus the winner of top-seed and host Cowley College and Dodge City. If the Cougars fall to Coffeyville, they would play again at 5 p.m. Thursday in the double-elimination tournament. that includes a Central Plains High School player and coach and Great Bend High
School coach Shelly Duvall. 
The annual match will be held June 5th at Lee Arena on Washburn
University’s campus in Topeka at 5:30 p.m. 
Duvall was named one of one of three coaches of the Blue Team along with Lisa
Crites of Central Plains. 
Ryenne Cunningham of Central Plains will compete on the Blue Team. 
The players selected are first nominated by their high school coaches and then
recommended by committee to fill the squads.&nbsp; &nbsp;

KANSAS CITY, Kan. -- In accordance with updated health protocols issued by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City, Kan., Sporting Kansas City announced today that home matches at Children’s Mercy Park will return to full capacity beginning May 29 when the club hosts Houston Dynamo FC.

Upon returning to full capacity, Children’s Mercy Park will continue to adhere to a number of health and safety protocols, including mobile entry, cashless payments, hand sanitization dispensers throughout the stadium and increased cleaning and sanitization before, during and after matches. Mask wearing is strongly encouraged but not required under the Unified Government’s latest guidelines, and Children’s Mercy Park will offer a designated seating section where masks will be required for all ticket holders within that area.

Sporting’s home match on May 29 will see the club honor frontline healthcare workers by giving 1,000 tickets to local medical professionals. The occasion will serve as the newest initiative from “<a href="https://www.sportingkc.com/post/2021/03/08/sporting-kc-launches-community-campaign-partnership-victory-project-and-children-s">A Force for Good</a>,” a newly launched campaign in which Sporting and The Victory Project join forces with local partners to serve the community. Additionally, Sporting will join a nationwide effort led by the White House COVID-19 Response Team by offering a 30% discount to vaccinated fans for in-stadium merchandise purchases at a June home match to be determined.
