UNDATED (AP) — An eye-opening win by Kansas State over Oklahoma and strong starts by Kansas and other Big 12 teams on the road have thrown the early conference standings into an unfamiliar heap.

Perennial basement dweller Kansas is 4-0 and on the cusp of its first ranking in 13 years. And look who’s sharing the league cellar, for now — the Sooners and fellow Southeastern Conference defector Texas.

Heading into the first full week of the Big 12 schedule, there is no team with a losing record and there are only three unbeaten teams left. Big 12 road teams are 9-4 so far this season, winning four out of six games last week, the most in one week since Oct. 31, 2020.

Kansas State looked befuddled in a nonconference home loss to Tulane two weeks ago, only to go into Norman to take down No. 18 Oklahoma for the third time in four years under coach Chris Klieman. The Wildcats were rewarded with the No. 25 ranking.

“We just talked about belief,” Klieman said after K-State beat the Sooners 41-34 behind quarterback Adrian Martinez’s 148 rushing yards and five total touchdowns. “We talked about how we’re a really good football team that didn’t get it done last week and that was over. We needed to believe this week that we were good enough to beat these guys.”

The Wildcats have no time to gloat because it must prepare to host a Texas Tech team that took down visiting Texas in overtime with the help of a 6-of-8 performance on fourth down.

Kansas has won both of its road games, including at West Virgini a on Sept. 10. To put things in perspective, from 2008 to 2021, the Jayhawks won just five times total on the road, and not more than once in any season.

Now it's time for a visit from Iowa State, which won its only other road game, a 10-7 squeaker over Iowa on Sept. 10. It's going to be a run game, power vs. power: The Jayhawks have compiled at least 200 rushing yards in every game. Iowa State allows just 76 yards on the ground per contest.

The way this season is going, everything can change in one weekend. Four Big 12 teams are ranked and three others are receiving votes in the AP poll.

“I think the parity in this league is may be more than ever,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “And I’ve said this for a number of years. You might have a team win this league that has two or three losses. You might this year, from what I’m seeing. There’s quality in this league and the competitive nature of playing road games, which are difficult. You’re just seeing a lot of teams that are about the same.”

TCU is 3-0 for the first time since 2017 after new coach Sonny Dykes beat his former team, SMU, on the road. And now the Horned Frogs will prepare for their league opener and get a visit from Oklahoma in a matchup of teams averaging more than 500 yards of offense.

“You look at the ratings and all that stuff, I mean, the league is really good,” Dykes said. “I think that’s what makes our league different is there’s no layups. You say, OK, who’s the layup in the league? And there’s not anybody. And there’s just not many leagues that can say that.

“You know, the team that was picked last in the league is right on the verge of being in the Top 25. Where else does that take place, except in the Big 12?"

Oklahoma will find out if it can bounce back from the Kansas State loss. The Sooners won their only other road game decisively over Nebraska. Oklahoma lost its first two league games in the COVID-shortened 2020 season, then rebounded to win the league.

“We’re not going to be defined by this loss moving forward,” said Oklahoma coach Brent Venables. “We will, however, be defined by how we respond moving forward. I still believe with everybody I got in this team and what’s still sitting in front of us.”

No. 9 Oklahoma State won its first three games, all played at Boone Pickens Stadium. After a bye week, the Cowboys have their league opener Saturday at No. 16 Baylor in a rematch of last year's conference title game that the Bears won in the final minute.

West Virginia, which started the season 0-2, is looking for its second straight road win at Texas after beating rival Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Thursday night. The Mountaineers are 3-2 in Austin, Texas, since joining the Big 12 in 2012.

“There’s a lot of football left in Big 12 play. We know that," Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. "We’ve got to take care of our business, and that starts Saturday at home against a really good team who’s getting better week by week.”

Smooth road for Kansas, K-State; Texas, Sooners last in B12

The Barton Community College women's golf team placed 7th Tuesday at the Lady Tiger Classic held at Hays' Smoky Hill Country Club.

Playing on its first upper tier course and among a field of NCAA Division II teams coming off spring 2022 Top-25 rankings, Barton held its own among the twelve team tournament.

The Cougars stood in 7th place after Monday's 37-over 325, slipping one on the scorecard at 38-over 326 for a combined 75-over 651 but holding steady in the final placing.

Central Missouri, ranked 23rd in last spring's rankings, ran away with the team title compiling a 32-over 608 for a twenty-two stroke victory. Barton placed one stroke behind Central Oklahoma's 74-over and five strokes ahead of Northwestern Missouri's 80-over.

Yu Wei Chiang paced the Cougars with a 21st place tie in the seventy participant field, falling two spots in the final round despite posting consecutive 80 rounds for a 16-over 160.

Four strokes back was Saya Schweitzer in 26th, carding 81 and 83 rounds for a 20-over 164.

Pornnapa Inmee led the Cougars with a final round climb of ten spots, jumping from the 46th position after an 86 round improving six strokes into the 36th spots with an accumulated 22-over 166. Andrea Peraza had opposite scores of Inmee, opening with a 19th best 80 card in falling into the 36th place tie with an 86.

Barton's remaining four entries each improved in their respective second time around layout. Valentina Leyva carded 84-83 rounds for a 39th place 23-over 167 while Paulina Villavicencio bounced back with the Cougars' biggest day two improvement of seven strokes by following a 99 with a 92 for 67th place 47-over 191. Katina Bartel improved four strokes from a 107 to 103 for a 69th place 66-over 210 with Allyson Kaiser shaving off three strokes from a 110 to 107 for a 73-over 217 70th placing overall.

The Cougars look to build upon the experience for its next fall season test coming October 6-7 in the NJCAA National Championship Preview held at Garden City's Buffalo Dunes Golf Course.

Barton women's golf takes on four-year schools with 7th place at Lady Tiger Classic

DENVER (AP) — That Mount Rushmore of Quarterbacks in the loaded AFC West is off to a rather rocky start.

Patrick Mahomes, Justin Herbert and Derek Carr all lost their Week 3 games, and Russell Wilson endured a career-high nine three-and-outs Sunday night before he finally flashed the magic that earned him a $245 million extension this month, quieting the Broncos' boobirds.

Aside from the 80-yard, 12-play masterpiece that ended with Melvin Gordon's 1-yard touchdown run, Wilson directed a dozen drives that resulted in two long field goal attempts and 10 punts as the Broncos grinded out an 11-10 win over San Francisco.

Wilson hasn't looked anything like the nine-time Pro Bowler he was with the Seahawks as he's thrown for just two touchdowns and scrambled for 22 yards. But Denver is 2-1 thanks to his back-to-back fourth-quarter comebacks against the Texans and 49ers, against whom he is now 17-4.

Wilson looked like his vintage self when he rolled out left to buy time and hit Kendall Hinton for a 27-yard gain on the run, then scrambled up the middle for 12 yards on the game-winning drive.

“It was kind of a surreal feeling,” center Lloyd Cushenberry said. "You see him make those plays in Seattle for so many years and now you’re on the field with him and watching him make these plays, scrambling and getting out of the pocket. The great throw he had to Kendall, it was one of those moments that you’ve seen for 10-plus years and him making those plays.

“It was vintage Russell Wilson back in his form.”

The Broncos now sit atop the AFC West alongside longtime division bully Kansas City after the Chiefs (2-1) flubbed their way to a 20-17 loss at Indianapolis.

Wilson's choppy changeover in Denver shouldn't come as much of a surprise, and not entirely because of rookie coach Nathaniel Hackett's “Camp Cupcake” that featured very little hitting over the summer and his decision to keep his starters, including Wilson, on the sideline in the preseason.

Peyton Manning lost three of his first five games in Denver a decade ago before leading the Broncos to a 13-3 record and their first of four consecutive playoff berths.

After two decades of dominance in New England, Tom Brady started out 7-5 with Tampa Bay two years ago before propelling the Buccaneers to the top for his seventh Super Bowl ring.

“When you look at it, Russell has been in one place for his whole career," Hackett said. “Then he comes here, he’s got a new coaching staff, new city, new fans, new press, new system, new people that he’s going out there and playing with. So it’s not as easy as just going out there with anybody and playing ball.”

Hackett even had to hire a veteran assistant coach to help him manage the game operations better after a series of blunders the first two weeks of the season that included taking the ball out of Wilson's hands for a 64-yard field goal try by Brandon McManus that missed, leaving the Seahawks 17-16 winners in Wilson's homecoming on opening weekend.

“We’re all working through all kinds of things," Hackett said. "I’m working through things with him. I’m making sure I’m calling the proper plays for him, that the players are running the right routes, and it’s just that whole thing, everybody working together.

"There’s been some good and there’s been some bad. We just have to make sure we have more good than bad as we continue to move forward.”

Speaking of questionable decisions, Mahomes got into a heated sideline spat with Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy on Sunday for not being aggressive at the end of the first half .

“I wanted to go for the score; that's just who I am,” Mahomes explained afterward.

The Chiefs didn't even try to score from their 36 with 30 seconds left, leading to Mahomes' animated discussion with Bieniemy before head coach Andy Reid got between them.

And how about Chargers coach Brandon Staley, who kept Herbert in the game down four touchdowns Sunday despite battered ribs in a 38-10 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars?

A trendy pick to win the Super Bowl, the Chargers are 1-2 and look nothing like championship contenders as Herbert plays through fractured rib cartilage.

In even worse shape are the Raiders (0-3), whose 24-22 loss to Tennessee on Sunday when Carr failed to covert a 2-point pass with 1:14 remaining left Las Vegas as the NFL's only winless team through three weeks.

The Raiders' trio of losses are by a combined 13 points.

“I’m looking for us to try to improve and play a full 60-minute game, where we actually start well, play well in all three phases, see what that looks like. I’m not sure that we’ve done that yet,” coach Josh McDaniels said.

Not since 1959 has an 0-3 NFL team had no company in the league's cellar, and the Raiders will seek to avoid their first 0-4 start since 2006 on Sunday when they host Wilson and the Broncos.

Analysis: Mount Rushmore of QBs off to a rather rocky start

DETROIT (AP) — Harold Castro singled in the winning run with two outs in the 10th inning after tying it with a two-run single in the eighth in the Detroit Tigers' 4-3 victory over the Kansas City Royals on Tuesday night.

Tucker Barnhart bunted pinch-runner Ryan Kreidler to third and Anthony Misiewicz (3-2) intentionally walked pinch-hitter Eric Haase.

Riley Greene struck out, and the Royals decided to walk Javy Báez to pitch to Castro with the bases loaded. He hit a soft grounder up the middle to win it.

“We were getting in the shower as soon as they walked Javy,” Spencer Torkelson said. “It was like, ‘All right, we’re getting to Hittin' Harold.' We have all the confidence in the world."

Baez has struck out 143 times this year, including in a key situation in the eighth, but Royals manager Mike Matheny said he never considered pitching to him with the left-handed Misiewicz on the mound.

“We were going to make their lefties beat us,” he said. “Baez is a right-handed hitter who hits lefties really well. Anthony made a good pitch — (catcher Salvador Perez) was going down to block hit, but (Castro) got a piece of it.”

Castro also helped with his glove. In the top of the 10th, Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a bouncer down the third-base line. Castro made a diving stop and, while he didn't have a play on Witt, was able to hold automatic runner MJ Melendez at second.

Alex Lange (6-4) retired Salvador Perez before getting Vinnie Pasquatino to bounce into an inning-ending double play.

The Tigers trailed 3-0 after seven innings against Zack Greinke, then tied it against Dylan Coleman in the eighth.

Torkelson started the inning with a walk, then beat third baseman Nate Eaton's throw to second on a groundball. After Tucker Barnhart lined out, Akil Baddoo's bunt single loaded the bases. Riley Greene grounded softly to Eaton, but his throw home pulled Salvador Perez off the bag.

Báez struck out, but Castro lined a 2-2 pitch to left for a tying single. Carlos Hernández came in to retire Miguel Cabrera to keep it tied.

“If you want a single, Harold is the guy you want up there,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said. “He does an incredible job of getting a piece of the ball and getting it onto the outfield grass. (Torkelson) made a couple nice baserunning plays in that inning and Akil got down that bunt on his own."

“Zack pitched a vintage Zack game today,” Matheny said. “I don't even look at the velocity when he's pitching — it is all about pitch shape for him. I just watch how the hitters are reacting to him.”

Tigers starter Joey Wentz allowed three runs in five innings.

The Royals took a 2-0 lead in the second on Dozier's home run — his 10th in 32 career games at Comerica Park and extended the margin to 3-0 on Nate Eaton's RBI triple in the fourth.

“I have no idea why I hit so well here,” said Dozier, who has only homered once against the Tigers at home. “I like this park - it's a fun place to play - so maybe I see the ball better here. I don't really know.”

Kansas City could have given Greinke a bigger lead. After stranding runners in scoring position in the first two innings, Edward Oliveres hit a two-out double that would have easily scored Vinnie Pasquatino from first, but the ball hopped over the fence for a ground-rule double and Dozier struck out.

In the fourth, Eaton was on third with one out after his triple, but second baseman Jonathan Schoop made a spectacular play to snag MJ Melendez's line drive, spin and throw to third for an inning-ending double play.

“We had a couple chances to score more runs, but we still got the game to the situation we wanted,” Matheny said. “We had a runner on second and our 2-3-4 hitters coming up in the 10th. We just didn't get it done.”

The bullpen cost Greinke his 14th win against the Tigers, which would have matched the most he has against any team — he has 14 against the Rockies, Padres and Giants. He picked up the first 13 wins against Detroit early in his career, last beating the Tigers on Sept. 9, 2012, while with the Angels. His 2.36 ERA at Comerica Park is the lowest of any active pitcher (min. 75 IP).

Game 2 of the three-game set is Wednesday night, with Detroit's Matt Manning (2-3, 3.43) facing Daniel Lynch (4-11, 5.06).

DENVER (AP) — The Denver Broncos went three-and-out nine times against the San Francisco 49ers, the most in Russell Wilson’s 11-year career. And only once did they get anywhere near the end zone.

“In the fourth quarter, when it mattered most, we clicked,” Wilson said after leading the lone long touchdown drive that powered the Broncos past the 49ers 11-10 Sunday night.

Wilson has gotten off to a slow start with his new team as he tries to mesh his style that embraces off-schedule plays when defenses break down with the philosophies of rookie head coach Nathaniel Hackett, whose version of the West Coast offense is predicated on quick throws.

Wilson has just three touchdown passes in three games and he has rushed for just 22 yards.

But he has engineered back-to-back fourth-quarter comebacks over Houston and San Francisco, and the Broncos are tied atop the AFC West with Kansas City at 2-1 after the Chiefs, Chargers and Raiders all lost Sunday.

Midway through the fourth quarter Sunday night, Wilson finally looked like the quarterback who signed a $245 million extension before he’d even taken a single snap for the Broncos.

On third-and-10 from his own 33, Wilson bought time in the pocket by spinning to his left and launching a 27-yard pass on the run to Kendall Hinton at the San Francisco 40.

“I guess I can still go left,” Wilson said in a potshot at his former coach in Seattle, Pete Carroll, who gloated after the Seahawks’ 17-16 win over Denver in Week 1 that he schemed to get Wilson moving to his left.

Three plays later, on third-and-6, Wilson found his receivers covered, stepped up and darted through the line for a 12-yard gain — by far his longest run of 2022.

“Really in the fourth quarter, I had to kind of use my legs and take over,” Wilson said. “Just try to move around and find some first downs.”

One play after that, he audibled out of a run call and hit Courtland Sutton in 1-on-1 coverage at the 5-yard line, and Melvin Gordon took it in from the 1 two plays later to put Denver ahead for the first time.

“That was pretty huge how he walked into the end zone there,” Wilson said after the Broncos’ first red zone touchdown in seven tries this season.

Wilson’s 2-point conversion pass was batted down, leaving the Broncos vulnerable to a game-winning field goal attempt. Robbie Gould never got that opportunity because Denver’s stingy defense recorded two more takeaways: Jonas Griffith’s interception of Jimmy Garoppolo’s pass and Kareem Jackson’s recovery of running back Jeff Wilson Jr.’s fumble.

“This atmosphere felt like a playoff atmosphere,” Wilson said. “That’s what we need. It means a lot to us as players to obviously go against a great team like that. We’re still all learning each other — it’s a whole new system. Everyone is coming together but there’s so much greatness in store. I can’t wait for it.

“Just watching out defense battle, battle, battle against a really good offense and then giving us a chance. And everybody just believes in each other. That’s what football is all about.”

Denver’s defense, which is allowing just 12 points a game.

“I don’t want to get too brash in saying this,” suggested Chubb, “but we’re the best in the (expletive) league.”

Denver’s offense. It’s still sputtering and the Broncos are going to need to average more than 14.3 points a game if they have a realistic chance of keeping up with Patrick Mahomes in the AFC West.

Broncos defensive coordinator Ejoro Evero. At this rate, Hackett will lose him to a head coaching opportunity sooner than anyone might have imagined. ... Punter Corliss Waitman averaged nearly 48 yards on 10 punts and six times buried the 49ers inside their 20-yard line.

Albert Okwuegbunam’s 12-yard catch was the only one by Denver’s tight ends (who were only targeted three times).

DT DJ Jones is in concussion protocol. ... RT Billy Turner still hasn’t been active for his comeback from offseason knee surgery.

5 — The number of penalties on Denver, for 30 yards, after the Broncos were whistled for a league-high 25 infractions through the first two weeks.

Russell Wilson shows Broncos he still has it in crunch time

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs' stunning loss to the Indianapolis Colts was special in all the wrong ways.

There was the fumbled punt that led to a touchdown. The near-fumble that backed them up to their own goal line. The missed field goal and missed extra point. The head-scratching decision to try a fake field goal rather than put the ball in the hands of one of the league's best quarterbacks. And lousy kick returns that led to more poor field position.

To put it bluntly: The Chiefs' special teams were an abject disaster in their 20-17 loss on Sunday in Indianapolis.

“Listen, in the NFL the parity is crazy,” Chiefs coach Andy Reid said, "so any mistakes get magnified, and that’s just how it goes. So we have to clean that up. We have to clean it up. We’ll get that taken care of.”

It would help to get Harrison Butker, one of the league's best kickers, back from an ankle that he sprained on the shoddy turf in Arizona. The Chiefs have been forced to use fill-in Matt Ammendola the past two weeks, and while he was solid in a win over the Chargers, he showed Sunday exactly why he wasn't on a roster at the end of training camp.

His missed extra point kept Kansas City from tying the game late in the first quarter, and it may have played into Reid's decision to try a fake field goal on fourth-and-11 from the Colts 24 early in the fourth quarter. Tommy Townsend, the holder, wound up throwing an incomplete pass on a play that wouldn't have picked up the first down anyway.

Pressed on the decision, Reid replied: "I probably should not have done that.”

Given what happened, maybe going for it on fourth down was a good idea — though perhaps with the ball in Patrick Mahomes' hands instead.

In any case, the Chiefs sent Ammendola back out with 8 1/2 minutes to go, but his 34-yard field-goal try was wide, keeping the game 17-13; those points would have forced overtime the way the game played out.

“Obviously we missed some kicks and stuff like that,” Mahomes said, “but the end of the day we had multiple opportunities to score. We have to find ways to get the ball in the end zone, and that starts with me.”

The Chiefs have to get Mahomes the ball first.

After their defense made a nice stand to start the game, rookie Skyy Moore fumbled the punt, and the Colts needed to go just 4 yards for a touchdown. He nearly whiffed on the next punt, too, which left the Chiefs with the ball nearly on their own goal line, and they promptly went three-and-out and gave it right back.

Sure, a personal foul penalty on defensive tackle Chris Jones on the drive on which the Colts scored the go-ahead touchdown in the waning minutes was critical. Yes, the offense squandered far too many opportunities.

More than anything else, though, it was special teams that truly let Kansas City down on Sunday.

The defense held Colts running back Jonathan Taylor to 21 carries for 71 yards, and it held Matt Ryan in check until their final drive. And even on that drive, the Chiefs had forced a punt when Jones — in a foolish mistake — was flagged for taunting Ryan, giving Indianapolis a fresh set of downs and ultimately leading to its go-ahead touchdown.

Obviously special teams need help. But so does the offense, which reached the end zone twice, but otherwise struggled to finish off drives.

Mahomes was held to 262 yards passing while throwing his first interception of the season, when Kansas City was trying frantically to get into position for a tying field goal in the final seconds.

JuJu Smith-Schuster had been relatively quiet through the first two weeks of the season, but the high-profile free-agent acquisition had his best game in a Chiefs uniform on Sunday. He caught five passes for 89 yards.

Jones only had two tackles and one tackle-for-loss in the game, and maybe his inability to get to the quarterback allowed his frustration to boil over. Whatever the reason, the personal foul penalty in the closing minutes was inexcusable.

The Chiefs came out of the game relatively unscathed. Now, they need to hope Butker's sore ankle is better by Sunday.

7 — If the Chiefs would have converted their two field goals, instead of missing one and trying a fake on the other, and made their missed PAT, that would have added up to seven points. And would have been enough to win the game.

The Chiefs hit the road for the third time in the first four weeks when they visit Tampa Bay on Sunday. The Buccaneers have hardly looked like the same dynamic outfit that routed Kansas City in the Super Bowl a couple of years ago, losing 14-12 to the Packers on Sunday in a game that often seemed as if nobody wanted to win.

Chiefs special teams failures lead to stunning loss in Indy

The Barton Community College volleyball team fell in four sets (20-25, 25-19, 20-25, 23-25) to national receiving votes Hutchinson Community College Monday evening inside the Barton Gym.

Having its' eight match win streak in the series snapped, the Cougars drop to 2-4 in KJCCC play and 13-4 on the season while the Blue Dragons move into a second place tie in the conference at 6-1 and 19-8 overall.

Barton will have a quick turnaround welcoming in Garden City Community College Wednesday night in a 6:30 p.m. opening serve from the Barton Gym.

Tasiah Nunnery posted the lone double-double of the evening consisting of 12 kills and 14 digs for a .174 hitting percentage. Nunnery also served up a season high five aces. Freshman setter Iris Oosterbaan had 43 assists and six digs. Hanna Miller led a trio of Cougars in double-digit digs with 27.

Barton hit .159 for the match on 49 kills, 170 attacks and 22 errors.

Hutchinson used a 5-0 run to gain an early 5-1 advantage. Following a pair of Jadyn Brown kills sprinkled between a Buse Kocakaya high riser, double assisted block by Molly Norris, and Oosterbaan pulled the Cougars within 9-8. The Dragons reeled off the next five to gain separation building up a 17-11 lead. A four pack of Blue Dragon errors mixed with a Nunnery kill and service ace brought Barton back within 17-16 before Hutchinson pulled away in the late stages scoring eight of the final 12 points taking the opening set 25-20.

In the second set, the Cougars would jump in front early as kills by Nunnery, Kocakaya and Jada Davis handed Barton an early 5-2 lead. Clinging to a 10-9 lead at the midway point, one of two Norris kills during a 5-0 run ballooned the lead to 15-9. Hutchinson would storm right back rattling nine of the next 12 points tying it at 18-18 before adding a 10th taking their first and only lead of the set at 19-18. The tide quickly swung in favor of the Cougars as a Nunnery kill, pair of Blue Dragon errors, Oosterbaan rise and shine and three Nunnery aces would cap a 7-0 close to the second set.

Trailing 7-3 in the third set, Barton would string five straight together to take their first lead at 8-7 succeeding a pair of Blue Dragon violations, Davis kills and Nunnery attack. Holding onto a 14-11 lead one of nine Cougar service errors on the evening activated a strand of eight straight for Hutchinson as the Blue Dragons took a 19-14 lead. The Cougars would create one final push as a Tatum Boettjer kill off the bench, Miller service ace, Nunnery kill and double assisted block teaming up with Davis trimmed the deficit to 20-19 before Hutchinson tallied five of the final six. 

In the fourth Hutchinson rode the momentum early taking a 5-2 lead until the Cougars stormed back with seven of the next 10 including four straight happening on a Davis kill, Blue Dragon attack error, Nunnery service ace and Brown attack pushing Barton into the lead at 9-8. Matching points over the next five rallies, Hutchinson grasped control with a 7-0 stretch to lead 18-12. Barton pieced together one final comeback utilizing a 7-1 run with Nunnery and Darby Smith generating four of the seven points to pull within 23-22, but the Blue Dragons score two of the final three points to close out the match.

Matching points over the next five rallies, Hutchinson grasped control with a 7-0 stretch to lead 18-12. Barton pieced together one final comeback utilizing a 7-1 run with Nunnery and Darby Smith generating four of the seven points to pull within 23-22, but the Blue Dragons score two of the final three points to close out the match.

Royals visit the Tigers to start 3-game series

Ten schools made up a large field for the Garden City tennis invitational Saturday. Kaylin Wahlmeier paced Great Bend with a fourth-place finish in the singles bracket. The Lady Panthers scored 58 points for fifth in the team standings. Garden City and Dodge City finished first and second, respectively, with 89 and 84 points.

Wahlmeier advanced to the semifinals with an 8-3 win against Hays and an 8-3 win against Garden City's No. 2 player. After an 8-3 loss to Dodge City's runner-up, Wahlmeier dropped an 8-2 match to Scott City in the consolation finals.

Lakyn Smith also played in the singles bracket, advancing to the quarters with an 8-5 win over Colby. She dropped an 8-0 match to the eventual runner-up from Dodge City. After an 8-1 loss to Garden City's No. 2 player, Smith defeated Liberal by injury default to claim seventh place.

Samantha Mayers and Taylor Lashley dropped their first doubles match to Colby 8-2. The girls bounced back with an 8-6 win against Garden City but fell 8-4 to the other Lady Buffalo team. Mayers and Lashley defeated a third Garden City team 8-6 in the 11th-place match.

Clarise Snapp and Mackenzie LaViolette finished 15th in the doubles bracket. After an 8-2 loss to the eventual third-place finishers from Colby, the GB pair fell 8-6 to the 10th-place team from Liberal. The girls lost to Meade 8-5 before defeating Dodge City Ulysses 8-7 (6) in a close tie-break set for 15th.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Luis Castillo, fresh off signing a rich contract with Seattle, got chased as the Kansas City Royals erupted for 11 runs in the sixth inning and a wild, 13-12 win Sunday that cost the Mariners a chance to move up in the AL wild-card standings.

The Mariners stayed in the third wild-card spot, a half-game behind Tampa Bay. Seattle remained four games ahead of Baltimore for that last AL playoff slot.

“We haven’t played good baseball on this trip,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “We need to get back to playing baseball the way we have all year that’s allowed us to be in this position. We do have a good opportunity to make the playoffs and the next ten games will define where we’re at.”

Mitch Haniger singled twice during an eight-run fifth for the Mariners, and they led 11-2 going into the bottom of the sixth.

“We did a lot of good things offensively, had a commanding lead in the ballgame, and we let our guard down a little bit and didn’t shut it down,” Servais said. “I go back to the thing we talk about all the time, controlling the strike zone. We gave them an opportunity to come back in the ballgame because we didn’t throw strikes.”

Castillo struggled to begin the sixth, and Michael Massey homered and drove in four runs during the Royals’ biggest inning since 2004.

“I just wanted to get something up in the zone and put a good swing on it,” Massey said. “I wasn’t trying to hit a homer; I was just trying to find the barrel.”

Said Royals manager Mike Matheny: “We had good at-bats from everyone and they did it against a playoff-contending club."

“Whenever you have a game where you are down that many runs and you find a way to get into it, it shows the fight and determination of this team," he said.

Castillo, an All-Star traded from Cincinnati to the Mariners in midseason, got a $108 million, five-year contract that begins next season. The deal was announced Saturday.

Holding a nine-run lead, Castillo struck out the first batter in the Royals sixth. After a walk and Massey’s homer, Castillo was pulled after another walk.

“(The top of the fifth, with Seattle batting) was just a very long inning,” Castillo said. “It was a long inning and I was on the bench for most of it, and I think it affected me.”

“He hasn’t been as sharp,” Servais said. “Balls missing location, been in the middle of the zone a little bit.”

The Royals wound up combining seven hits, including a two-run single by Massey, and five walks off four pitchers to take the lead. Matt Brash (3-5) faced four batters and failed to record an out.

“We didn’t throw strikes,” Servais said. “You don’t throw strikes in this league you are gifting them opportunities. It started with Luis. Luis couldn’t get the ball in the zone and we had to go to some guys in the pen who have been good at doing that and they couldn’t do it.”

Hunter Dozier finished with three hits and two RBIs for the Royals.

Jose Cuas (4-2) recorded four outs for the win. Scott Barlow earned his 24th save.

Royals starter Max Castillo, who was recalled from Triple-A Omaha prior to the game, left after a bases-loaded walk to Cal Raleigh put the Mariners ahead 3-2 in the fifth. He allowed six runs on six hits and four walks.

The Mariners finished their road schedule at 45-36, while the Royals completed their home schedule at 38-43.

Kansas City’s announced attendance of 18,350 brought its season total to 1,277,776. That was 201,883 fewer than in 2019, the most recent season before COVID-19 restrictions.

Mariners OF Jesse Winker left Sunday’s game with a bruised left wrist after being hit by a pitch for the second time in the game; post-game X-rays were negative.
