Barton Women Selected Second In D1 Coaches' Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The timing of the Kansas City Chiefs' bye this week couldn't have come at a better time for Patrick Mahomes. And not just because the bumps and bruises from the first seven games of the NFL season will have a chance to heal.

There's the Kansas City Current, the women's professional soccer team owned in party by his wife Brittany, who will be playing the Portland Thorns for the NWSL championship on Saturday in Washington, D.C. And the Kansas City Royals, the Major League Baseball club in which he owns an interest, who are closing in on hiring a new manager.

Oh, and then there's “Call of Duty” with his buds.

It was playing that game with JuJu Smith-Schuster, Travis Kelce and Marquez Valdes-Scantling a week ago that Mahomes credited with improved communication in last week's win over San Francisco.

For the first time all season, Mahomes looked to be on the same page with his new wide receivers along with his venerable tight end, and the result was an offensive explosion against one of the NFL's best defenses. The 44-23 victory sent Kansas City into its week off 5-2 and atop the AFC West, rather than 4-3 and tied for the lead with the Chargers.

“I don’t play all the time,” Mahomes explained afterward. "I had a free night on Friday, so I told them, 'I’ll get on with y’all for a little while.’ It was me, Travis, Marquez and JuJu. Marquez and JuJu are really good. Me and Travis are just all right. We did our part and we went three-for-three with three wins in Warzone, which I don’t do often.

“So,” Mahomes said in a segue to facing the 49ers, "I felt pretty good about it going into the game.”

In truth, Mahomes should be feeling good about the way the first half of the season has gone.

The big question mark surrounding the Chiefs had to do with replacing Tyreek Hill, the speedy security blanket for Mahomes the past several years. But his numbers through the first seven games have been as good as ever: He leads the NFL in touchdown passes (20), yards passing (2,159) and passer rating (109.5) among true quarterbacks, all while facing three of the top 10 scoring defenses in the NFL over that time period.

Against the 49ers, when Mahomes threw for 423 yards and three scores, Valdes-Scantling caught three balls for 111 yards and Smith-Schuster caught seven for 124 and a score. It was the first time Mahomes had two players with at least 100 yards receiving in a game in which neither player was Kelce or Hill.

“Patrick Mahomes is the definition of a Hall of Famer. He's changed the game,” Bills pass rusher Von Miller said. “Nobody has ever played the game like he has. He's left a mark on our sport, left a mark on our league.

“And,” Miller said, "he's influenced his teammates to play at a higher level than they normally would.”

Speaking of Hall of Fame, the win over the 49ers was the 55th in Mahomes' first 70 starts, tying Hall of Famer Ken Stabler for the second most at that stage in an NFL career. Only Otto Graham, another member of the Hall of Fame, has started off better with 56 wins since the NFL began tracking such numbers in 1950.

Mahomes keep rewriting Chiefs history, too.

He just passed Trent Green for the second most passes completed in a career with 1,726, and he needs 360 yards to pass Green (21,549) for second in yards passing. At his current rate, he could top Hall of Famer Len Dawson (28,507) for No. 1 at some point next season, along with breaking Lenny the Cool's record for TD passes (237).

“He’s too crazy fun,” said another Hall of Fame quarterback, Joe Montana. “He does everything you tell every quarterback you can’t do or don’t do. He does all of it and does it well. You don’t throw off your back foot, don’t go this way, don’t throw sidearm, don’t throw late down the middle. He is one of the most talented guys that you’ll see in that position.”

The result are plays that few other quarterbacks in the NFL can make.

“Some guys just have that innate ability to look down field and try to make a play,” Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy said. “He has that pilot vision eyes where he can see the entire field. Some guys don’t have that where they can basically see a flag being thrown from their left and also understand, ‘I have receivers potentially open down field,’ because the defensive slacked off. So, we’re encouraging that. We want him to try (to) make a play whenever possible.”

He won't have to make any plays this week, though. Mahomes will be busy watching the Current play for a title and perhaps fielding a phone call or two from Royals general manager J.J. Picollo, who'll be wrapping up their managerial search.

Even so, football probably won't be far from Mahomes' mind.

A lifetime of commitment to the rodeo industry earned&nbsp;<a href="https://prorodeo.com/bio/contestant/bronc-rumford/5622">Bronc Rumford</a>&nbsp;the 2022 PRCA Donita Barnes Contract Personnel Lifetime Achievement Award. Rumford, who lives in Abbyville, Kan., has been involved in the rodeo business his entire life. "It hasn't sunk in yet," said Rumford, 71. "It is such a personal award for me. Bob and Donita were close, close friends with my folks. When I turned pro in the early 1970s, I went to what became the Great Lakes Circuit and we rodeoed up there with Bob and Donita. We would leave home and go to Cherokee, Iowa, in May and we would stay up there all summer. I still remember my folks calling Bob and Donita before I went to Cherokee that year, I got my card. My dad said the kids are going to come up there and rodeo with you and you make sure that you work them and if you need anything from them, they do it. My mom told Donita to take care of us and watch after us. "Donita pretty much baby sat me and taught me so much about how to enter and even how to rodeo. The Barnes family has always been special to us and Donita, extremely special. To get an award named after her is really an honor for me. She was such a great lady. I'm just extremely proud to get this award." The Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award will be presented to Rumford at the PRCA Awards Banquet on Nov. 30 at the South Point in Las Vegas. Other nominees for the 2022 Donita Barnes Lifetime Achievement Award were Edie Longfellow; Grant and Betsy Harris; Jerry Wayne and Judy Olson; and Kay Bleakly. "All the nominees are personal friends of mine and every one of them should win this award," Rumford said. "It is very special to be nominated with those other nominees." Nominees must have been a PRCA member for a minimum of 15 years and cannot have won a yearly contract personnel award within 15 years of the date of nomination. All nominations were reviewed and selected by an external panel. The top five nominees were voted on by any contract personnel members who have participated in at least one rodeo within that rodeo year. "In the rodeo business we have done about everything there is to do," Rumford said. "If I had it to do over, I would probably do the same thing. I wouldn't change the lifestyle. The greatest thing about the rodeo world is the people. There are no better people on Earth than rodeo cowboys in my opinion." &nbsp; Rumford is the father of award-winning clown/barrelman Justin and award-winning secretary Haley Bridwell. (AP) — The Kansas City Chiefs acquired New York Giants wide
receiver Kadarius Toney on Thursday for a pair of picks in next
year’s draft, a person familiar with the terms of the trade told
The Associated Press. The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity
because the deal was pending a physical, said the Giants will get the
third-round pick that the Chiefs got as compensation for Ryan Poles
becoming the general manager of the Chicago Bears along with a
sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft that will be hosted by Kansas
City. Toney was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year
and is under contract through the 2024 season with a fifth-year team
option. That makes the trade relatively low risk for the Chiefs.

The person, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical, said the Giants will get the third-round pick that the Chiefs got as compensation for Ryan Poles becoming the general manager of the Chicago Bears along with a sixth-round pick in the 2023 draft that will be hosted by Kansas City.

"We just thought it was for the best of the team,” Giants coach Brian Daboll told reporters Thursday.

Toney was drafted in the first round by the Giants last year and is under contract through the 2024 season with a fifth-year team option.

That makes the trade relatively low risk for the Chiefs, who still have eight selections in next year's draft.

Toney only has two catches for no yards this season in part because of a right hamstring injury he sustained in training camp. He tweaked the injury in Week 2 against Carolina, then hurt his left hamstring in practice earlier this month.

The Chiefs are off this week, which could give Toney time enough to recover — and learn their playbook — before they begin the second half of the season against the Tennessee Titans on Nov. 6 at Arrowhead Stadium.

The Giants were eager to gain draft capital for Toney, who had been bypassed on the depth chart in New York, while the Chiefs were eager to gain a high-upside wide receiver signed for the next two years. Their top two wide receivers, Mecole Hardman and JuJu Smith-Schuster, are scheduled to become free agents after this season.

Toney has only appeared in 12 of a possible 24 games because of injuries and a bout with COVID-19. He has 41 catches for 420 yards, including a game against Dallas last year in which he caught 10 passes for 189 yards.

He was ejected from that game for throwing a punch late in a blowout loss to the Cowboys.

The Chiefs had been looking for help at wide receiver ahead of the Nov. 1 trade deadline. They had recently inquired about Elijah Moore, who had requested a trade from the Jets, and veterans Texans wide receiver Brandin Cooks.

If he's able to stay healthy, Toney could end up being a steal in Kansas City, where Patrick Mahomes has turned a series of lower-profile receivers into stars. And he would do it at a bargain price for the cap-strapped Chiefs, who would owe Toney just over $1.9 million guaranteed next season and $2.5 million in 2024 before the fifth-year option for 2025.

His skillset, which in some ways mimics the departed Tyreek Hill, also fits nicely in coach Andy Reid's scheme. Toney has the speed to beat defenses deep, quickness enough to line up in the slot and can even work out of the backfield.

The Giants, who lost Sterling Shepard to a torn ACL against the Cowboys last month, plan to move forward with Wan'Dale Robinson, Darius Slaton, Marcus Johnson and Richie James as their primary wide receivers.

Attacking the lanes for the third straight weekend, the Barton Community College men's bowling team posted solid results at the 14th Annual Hammer Lions Classic held at the Plaza Lanes in St. Charles, Missouri.

Entered as the lone NJCAA program, the Cougars stood in fifth place of the eight-team field at the conclusion of Saturday's three individual team games and 20-baker games. Barton sustained their spot in Sunday's final action clinching the fifth seed.

Entering bracket play the Cougars had a sluggish start dropping its opening match to Drury University in straight games. Rebounding with vengeance Barton rattled off three straight victories before bowing out to eventual champions Lindenwood University dropping a decisive third game.

Securing the team tournament title was McKendree University totaling a tournament high pin count of 6,826 edging out host Lindenwood University's 6,749 total. Claiming the bracket title was Lindenwood edging out third seeded Missouri Baptist in the best of five games.

Griffin Peterson nearly collected a top-10 performance carding a 14th best 561 score. The sophomore tossed the Cougars top single game score of 255 in the opener of his three games bowled.

Bryce Moore turned in a 33rd place 515 score while V-Thoon Thanasouk and Oscar Rubio conducted a 36th and 64th finish.

Fielding a junior varsity team, Alex Flinn led the Cougars second entered team with a 30th best score of 519 edging out Caleb Carr's 40th place score of 483.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State hopes to know late in the week whether it will have Adrian Martinez under center when the No. 22 Wildcats play ninth-ranked Oklahoma State in a game that could help decide who plays in the Big 12 championship game.

Martinez barely played last week at TCU, when the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) blew a 28-10 lead in a loss to the Horned Frogs that left them fighting for second place in the conference race. They are tied with Oklahoma State (6-1, 3-1), which also has lost to TCU, and that means the winner Saturday will have a big advantage in the race for a title-game rematch.

“Injuries? It’s part of (the game),” said Kansas State coach Chris Klieman, whose team has experienced more than its share this season. “That’s why you got 85. We got other guys who can come up and play. We’ll be OK.”

“The thing about it is our kids knew that they had an opportunity to win the game no matter who was playing,” Klieman said of last week's loss. "We just didn’t make plays. We’re not going to make excuses on who’s playing injuries or not. We’re going to get them ready and we got a tough one against Oklahoma State. We’ll be ready.”

Will Howard threw for 225 yards and two touchdowns in place of Martinez against the Horned Frogs, and the backup would be first up against the Cowboys if the Wildcats' starter can't play. Howard has been dealing with a sore shoulder, though, which briefly forced third-stringer Jake Rubley into last week's game.

The Cowboys faced their share of adversity on the field last week, trailing Texas by 10 late in the third quarter. But they calmly rallied behind quarterback Spencer Sanders, whose two fourth-quarter TD passes lifted them to a 41-34 victory and kept them in prime position to land a spot in the Big 12 title game with five left on the schedule.

“We ended the game with six freshmen playing on defense there towards the end. I know at kickoff we had nine guys running down the field that had never played college football, basically,” Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said. “We had a lot of guys that were banged up, nicked up, and we had to put some other guys into play. It is what it is.”

Kansas State PK Chris Tennant has missed three of his past four field-goal attempts, including two at TCU that could have helped trim the deficit in the second half. P Ty Zentner and freshman PK Leyton Simmering could get a chance Saturday.

“The thing with specialists is always staying ready to go,” Zentner said. “Whoever he rolls out there will be confident.”

Wildcats DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah has been nursing injuries most of the season, while DBs Josh Hayes and Julius Brents were limited last week against the Horned Frogs. LB Daniel Green left the game with an injury and could be out this week.

The Cowboys are No. 1 in the FBS in fewest penalties with 27 through seven games, and they had no penalties last week against Texas for the first time in program history. Kansas State is No. 13 nationally in penalty yardage at 269.

The Cowboys defense is allowing 25.5% of third down conversions, the fourth-best mark in the FBS, and that proved crucial in last week's game against Texas. They trailed 31-24 at halftime but allowed just a field goal in the second half.

“We don’t want to argue with each other,” Oklahoma State defensive tackle Collin Clay said. “We just stayed calm and told each other the game wasn’t over, we still got another half to play. We made the corrections that we needed to make.”

Texas ran for 204 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 6.4 yards per carry. That should bode well for the Wildcats, who are averaging 232.1 yards on the ground per game, the 11th-best total in major college football.

“The bad news is we didn’t get the communication right," Gundy said. "The good news is we should be able to fix that.”

Hitting the lanes for the third straight weekend, the Barton Community College women's bowling team continued to build on its' early season success this past weekend at the 14th Annual Hammer Lions Classic held in St. Charles, Missouri.

Sitting in sixth place following Saturday's three individual games and 20 baker games, the Cougars sustained their spot in Sunday's morning action earning the sixth seed in the double-elimination bracket play. Barton would conduct a 1-2 mark in double-elimination play knocking off third seed Missouri Baptist University in the opening round before bowing out to the Panthers in a rematch in the third round of the consolation side.

Claiming the team title and bracket championship was host Lindenwood University tallying a tournament 6,524 pins outlasting the field of nine teams. Missouri Baptist University concluded a runner-up finish in bracket play outlasting second seeded Avila in the decisive round 6.

Angelina Leeper with her All-Tournament Team award.Individually the Cougars were led by Angelina Leeper's fourth place finish and All-Tournament team selection in the 66-participant field. Leaper totaled a three-game individual team high of 591 pins for an average score of 197 per 10-frames. The sophomore rolled above the 200-mark in two of her three games with the highest round coming in game three with a 203.

Just slipping outside the top-10 was Mallory Cross earning a 12th place finish of 549 pins. Cross carded the highest individual single game score of 234 in the second tossed game.

Ella Adkins turned in a 34th place 450 pin total while Jasmine Bridges and Allyson Heidenreich conducted 43rd and 46th place showings.

Ana Stanton and Courtney Kitchen rounded the individual placings tossing one game for a 63rd and 64th placing respectfully.

The Cougars will be right back in action next weekend for the two-day event at the Jayhawk Challenge held at West Ridge Lanes in Topeka, KS.

Campbell were among 15 players named finalists for the William V.
Campbell Trophy, an award given to college football’s top
scholar-athlete. Finalists are chosen from all levels of college

postgraduate scholarship. The winner will be announced Dec. 6 and

midst of his worst season. The Broncos are 2-5 despite an impressive

Clark was suspended two games by the NFL on Tuesday after pleading no contest last month to two counts of misdemeanor possession of an assault weapon in Los Angeles.

The league announced the suspension as the Chiefs (5-2) head into their bye week. He will miss games against the Titans and Jaguars and will be allowed back with the team on Nov. 14 in time for that week's game against the Chargers.

The three-time Pro Bowl pass rusher was sentenced to one year of probation and 40 hours of community service after he was arrested in March 2021, when he was pulled over while riding with another man in a vehicle that did not have a license plate. An officer noticed a weapon in the car and recovered two loaded firearms.

Three months later, Clark was pulled over for a code violation and officers discovered another gun in his vehicle.

The 29-year-old Clark has struggled with illnesses throughout the fall, and that's limited him to just 15 tackles and three sacks. That comes after a disappointing season in which Clark had 4 1/2 sacks, his lowest total since his rookie season.

The Chiefs, desperate to improve their pass rush after ranking among the league's worst last season, managed to rework Clark's massive contract in the offseason to keep him in Kansas City. He got a signing bonus of $4,550,000, a base salary of $3,725,000 this season and a roster bonus of $900,000, along with $75,000 for each game he is active.

Without Clark, the Chiefs will have to lean on first-round draft pick George Karlaftis and veteran Carlos Dunlap along with Mike Danna, who has struggled for several weeks with a calf injury but should be healthy after the bye. They also will need to get continued production from defensive tackle Chris Jones, who leads the team with five sacks.

the West, Barton begins the post-season on Saturday at home in
welcoming the East's 4th seed Kansas City Kansas Community College in
an 11:00 a.m. kick-off at Cougar Field. The victor will then advance
to the November 3rd semifinal round of the Region VI/Plains District
Tournament held at Wichita's Stryker Sports Complex.

Barton Community College women's soccer team put the final touches on
their regular season Tuesday in clinching sole possession of the
Jayhawk West title with a 4-0 victory over Johnson County Community
College.

Having notched Head
Coach Ousmane Camara's program most two conference titles in its 2-0
win over Hutchinson the previous time on the pitch, Tuesday's win
leaves the Cougars alone atop the standings at 11-2 and 15-3 on the
year. Despite the loss, Johnson County remains in third place of the
East Division at 5-8 in dropping to 8-10 overall.

Next up for the
Cougars is a home first round playoff game at 1:00 p.m. Saturday
hosting Kansas City Kansas Community College. The victor will then

The Great Bend Panthers Boys Soccer season came to an end Monday night in Wichita as the the Panthers fell 2-0 to the Valley Center Hornets.

Valley Center led 1-0 at halftime before pushing across a goal with 7:36 left in game to seal the victory.

Great Bend ends the season with a record of 2-15. Valley Center improved to 4-12-1 as they travel to Emporia Tuesday to face the Spartans.

Panther Soccer season ends with loss to Valley Center

Hosting the first of three home meets on the season, the Barton Community College swimming programs took on Iowa Central Community College Saturday morning inside the Barton Pool.

The home waves presented mixed results for the pair of Cougar teams with the women defeating the Tritons 102-91 while the Barton men fell on the wrong side dropping a 144-61 result.

"It was a great learning experience for our team and gave us a good idea on what adjustments we need to work on heading into the key part of our season", said head coach Matt Gilbert.

On the women's side, the Lady Cougars claimed just three victories on the day with Olivia Kerr earning the lone individual title while the other two would come in the team events.

Barton would jump out to a solid start claiming the mornings opening event in the 400-yard medley relay with Silvana Jacquez Viveros, Dominique Cos, Linda Franco and Mikwena Lierman clocking a 4:21.83.

Just two events later Kerr added the squads second victory of the morning in the 200-yard freestyle swimming to a new season best stoppage of 2:05.73 edging out Jacquez runner-up finish of 2:08.01.

Lierman, Kerr and Franco would team up with Caroline Tipton in the final event of the day claiming the second relay gold for the Cougars in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:42.86.

The Barton men pieced together six runner-up finishes over the 11-events led by Enzo Vogt da Silva's pair of second place finishes in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:40.75) and 500-yard freestyle (4:56.53).

Of the other four runner-up finishes, two individuals earned silvers with Dominik Strba in the 400-yard medley (4:30.65) and Jonathan Beers in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:18.94).

The Cougars other two-second place finishes came in the relays with a 3:42.28 in the 400-yard medley and a 1:27.13 in the 200-yard freestyle.

Barton's next meet comes this weekend at the Kansas Collegiate Showcase held Friday and Saturday in Maize, KS.

And a valid argument could be made that the first seven games were far more difficult than what Kansas City will face down the stretch.Maybe hosting a fifth straight AFC title game isn't quite the longshot it seemed after a stunning loss at Indianapolis.“We had a tough schedule going into the bye. We knew that going into the season,” said Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who threw bounced back from an early interception to throw for 423 yards and three scores against the 49ers.Of the 10 games the Chiefs have after their bye, six are against teams that are .500 or worse, and only the Titans (4-2) are more than a game above the break-even mark.
