The Barton Community College wrestling team took to the mats for the second straight weekend Saturday, competing in the Grand View Open held in Des Moines, Iowa.

Competing as a shorthanded squad without returning NJCAA qualifier&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2022-23/bios/chavez_dawson_7z2l" target="_blank">Dawson Chavez</a>, freshmen&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2022-23/bios/wolf_avery_kkgi" target="_blank">Avery Wolf</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="http://www.bartonsports.com/sports/wrest/2022-23/bios/suchy_cohen_ilyu" target="_blank">Cohen Suchy</a>&nbsp;provided the lone victories for the Cougars closing the day with a team record of 2-10 competing in five of the 10 weight classes.

Receiving byes and dropping their first matches to start the day, Wolf and Suchy stormed back with falls over Dylan Dalgord (Unattached) and Matt Wilson (Benedictine College) respectfully, before bowing out ending the Cougars day.

Barton will conclude its' third straight open at the UNK Younes Holiday Inn Open held in Kearney, Nebraska featuring another stout field.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Jaykwon Walton had 20 points in Wichita State's 56-53 victory over Richmond on Thursday night.

Walton was 6 of 13 shooting, including 2 for 4 from distance, and went 6 for 8 from the line for the Shockers (2-1). James Rojas added 15 points while shooting 5 of 7 from the field and 4 for 5 from the line, and he also had six rebounds. Craig Porter Jr. was 5 of 9 shooting (1 for 3 from distance) to finish with 11 points, while adding nine rebounds and five steals.

The Spiders (2-2) were led in scoring by Isaiah Bigelow, who finished with 16 points, 11 rebounds and two steals. Tyler Burton added 15 points and eight rebounds and Jason Nelson finished with seven points, seven assists and two steals.

Walton put up 10 points in the first half for Wichita State, who led 28-19 at the break. Walton led Wichita State with 10 points in the second half as his team was outscored by six points over the final half but held on for the victory.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Chiefs' Isiah Pacheco is the poster child for why NFL general managers don’t spend early draft picks on running backs.

The fact that the seventh-round selection has supplanted a 2020 first-round pick underscores the point.

After showing flashes of brilliance in training camp, Pacheco has moved ahead of Clyde Edwards-Helaire on the unofficial depth chart in Kansas City, getting the bulk of the carries on game day. He had season highs of 16 carries for 82 yards last week against Jacksonville, when Edwards-Helaire never got a chance with the ball in his hands.

“I've definitely been going at it every week, getting the feel for different teams, different schemes,” Pacheco said.

“For me, it's having the same mindset every day I come into the building: going to work, going to the practice field, go 100 percent, so when it gets to game day, go at a high level.”

Chiefs coach Andy Reid said this week that it wasn't by design that Edwards Helaire, their 2020 first-round pick, did not get a carry against Jacksonville, or that his only two targets in the passing game fell incomplete.

At one point, Edwards-Helaire was supposed to be in for an entire series, but the Chiefs went three-and-out.

Still, it's not difficult to notice that Pacheco has simply been more productive. He has 60 carries for 279 yards, which is more yardage than third-round pick Rachaad White of the Buccaneers on the exact same number of carries. Pacheco's average of 4.7 yards per attempt is a half-yard more than Edwards-Helaire this season.

Pretty good returns from the 251st player selected in April's draft.

“He's learning on the move, but he's had some good snaps,” Reid said. "It's worked out well where Clyde's getting reps and he's getting reps, and I think that's healthy. We're able to throw fastballs at the guys and then (Jerick McKinnon) is getting in there and doing his thing more on third downs.

“We'll just keep bringing him along,” Reid said, “but I like his progress.”

The fact that Pacheco was the penultimate running back selected in the draft — the last if you consider Zander Horvath of the Chargers a fullback — is a little hard to believe.

Pacheco tested better than nearly every other running back at the NFL scouting combine, tying for the best time in the 40-yard dash at 4.37 seconds despite his 215-pound frame.

Part of that might have to do with his inconsistent use at Rutgers, where Pacheco never got more than 169 carries in any of his four seasons. Some teams may simply not have had enough tape on him to fully realize his potential.

Yet time has proven that where players are drafted — running backs in particular — hardly portends success or failure.

Sure, the league's leading rusher, Saquon Barkley, was the No. 2 overall pick of the Giants in 2018, and the Titans' Derrick Henry was a second-round selection two years earlier.

But four of the top 12 running backs by yardage this season went in the fourth round or later, including the Dolphins' Jeff Wilson, who wasn't drafted at all.

The top two running backs taken in April, Breece Hall of the Jets and Kenneth Walker III of the Seahawks, were selected in the second round and have had dynamic debuts — though Hall is lost to a season-ending knee injury.

But Pacheco has more yards rushing than 16 running backs that were drafted ahead of him this year.

“I said it all throughout camp, we're pushing each other to be better,” McKinnon said, "and it's something that's continued forward, and I think it's showing when that person gets their number called, they've risen to the occasion."

That was the case when Pacheco fumbled early in the Chiefs' 27-17 win over Jacksonville. Rather than hang his head on the sideline, Pacheco vowed to make up for the gaffe.

And in a sign of how much Reid trusts him, the Chiefs went right back to Pacheco when they got another chance with the ball.

“It just showed me that I can be something in this offense,” Pacheco said. “I just have to continue to put in that work.”

NOTES: WRs JuJu Smith-Schuster (concussion protocol) and Mecole Hardman (abdominal injury) along with WR Chris Lammons (concussion protocol) did not practice Thursday. ... Shemarri Allen scored 21 points, including 16 in the second half when the Roos cut a 20-point deficit to 10, the final time with four minutes to go. Anderson Kopp added 13 points.

A soaring dunk by Johnson put K-State up by 20 early in the second half. But a 3-of-17 shooting stretch by the Wildcats aided Kansas City's comeback. The Roos (1-4) were not able to get the margin to single digits with Sills putting in four layups.

After Kansas City got the game's first basket, Johnson scored the next eight points and the Wildcats led the rest of the way. Carter had five points and Nae'Qwan Tomlin four in a 9-0 run late in the half with K-State leading 41-25 at the break. Carter had 14 points on 4-of-7 3-point shooting with the Wildcats 7 of 16 from the arc in the half. They missed their four attempts from the arc in the second half.

The Roos had 22 turnovers, two more than their average, that resulted in 26 points for the Wildcats, who made 11 steals.

Competing for the first time in six years at the NJCAA National Championships, the Barton Community College men's cross country team put a lid on the 2022 season this past weekend at the Apalachee Regional Park in Tallahassee, Florida.

Fielding a team on the big stage for the first time in seven years, the Cougars accumulated a team scoring 527 points earning 21st in the field of 29 teams while finishing sixth between the eight entered Region VI teams. Claiming the National Championship was KJCCC foe Colby Community College with 38-points thanks to all five runners finishing within the top-17, led by Sanele Masondo winning the individual crown outrunning the 194-competitor field in 24.07.2.

Theo Leveque led the Cougars to the tape for the sixth time this season, placing 30th with a time of 26:14.3 to close out his impressive freshman campaign.

Fabian Campbell navigated the eight-kilometer course in 28:58.1, finishing 98th, with Brandon Nguyen crossing the line 27-spots back in 125th with a stoppage of 30:05.4.

Bryant Galvez crossed the line in 30:53.9, good for 146th place, with Jarron King rounding out the Cougar five pack in 176th with a time of 33:07.1.

Running her final 5k race in the Cougar uniform, Karina Herrera led Barton to the line for the sixth time this year, finishing 103rd in clocking a 22:05.8. 

Four seconds and two spots behind was Koe Schultz placing 105th with a stoppage of 22:09.9.

Abigail Behring finished in 141st place after traversing the course in 23:37.4, while Karina Estrada rounded out the Cougar placings in 158th clocking a 24:57.6.

Claiming the team title was Southern Idaho scoring a team total of 61 edging out New Mexico Junior College 79 and third place Salt Lake's 95-point total. Faith Nyathi of El Paso Community College claimed the individual title with a best time of 17:47.8.

MANHATTAN, Kan. (AP) — Kansas State defeated No. 4 Iowa 84-83 on Thursday night after Gabby Gregory hit a free throw with four seconds left to put the Wildcats on top. Hawkeye Monika Czinano was fouled on the final possession, but after the review it was determined the time had expired before the foul. Iowa led for most of the game. Kansas State had the lead for just under two minutes. Iowa was the highest ranked opponent the Wildcats have beaten in school history. The Hawkeyes’ No. 4 ranking was their highest in nearly 30 years.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Guard Jose Perez has enrolled at West Virginia for the spring semester. Perez left Manhattan after coach Steve Masiello was fired. West Virginia coach Bob Huggins says Perez's eligibility status for games and practices will be determined at a later date. The fifth-year senior was chosen as the preseason Player of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He averaged nearly 19 points and more than four assists and three rebounds per game a year ago. West Virginia will be his fourth school. Perez spent two seasons at Gardner-Webb and one each at Marquette and Manhattan.

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (AP) — Kansas State backup quarterback Will Howard will get his second start of the season when the 19th-ranked Wildcats play at West Virginia on Saturday. Howard will start in place of the injured Adrian Martinez. Kansas State can earn a Big 12 title game berth with a win Saturday and a loss by Texas at Kansas. West Virginia backup quarterback Garrett Greene was solid in a win over Oklahoma in place of JT Daniels. Coach Neal Brown says Greene could play more.

WACO, Texas (AP) — TCU coach Sonny Dykes isn't having to find new ways each week to motivate his team. The fourth-ranked have already clinched a spot in the Big 12 title game, and they have to keep winning to make the four-team College Football Playoff. TCU is 10-0 and plays at Baylor on Saturday. Baylor is coming off a 31-3 home loss to No. 19 Kansas State. The 6-4 Bears have to win their last two games and get a lot of help just to get to back to the league title game. They were Big 12 champs last year, even with a loss to TCU.

NORMAN, Okla. (AP) — Bedlam won’t be quite the high-stakes showdown many expected at the start of the season. Plenty still will be on the line when No. 24 Oklahoma State visits Oklahoma. Both began the season with College Football Playoff aspirations and top 12 rankings. Both slipped after their quarterbacks were knocked out of action. Oklahoma State still could reach the conference title game with help. Oklahoma can become bowl eligible with a victory. It will be one of the last meetings between the rivals before Oklahoma leaves for the Southeastern Conference.

IOWA CITY, Iowa (AP) — Iowa and Iowa State will continue their annual football showdowns through at least 2027. The schools have announced a two-year extension of the CyHawk Series contract. Iowa and Iowa State have played annually since resuming the series in 1977. That excludes the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. The teams first met in 1894 and Iowa holds a 46-23 advantage in the series. Iowa State won 10-7 in Iowa City in September.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Fans usually expect a passing duel when Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs face Justin Herbert and the Los Angeles Chargers. That might not be the case on Sunday night, with both teams unsure of who will line up at wide receiver. The Chiefs won’t have Mecole Hardman and likely will be missing JuJu Smith-Schuster for the prime-time showdown. Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are questionable for the Chargers. Kansas City leads the AFC West and with a win, the Chiefs would take a three-game lead over the Chargers with seven games to play.

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) — Ryan Tannehill threw for 333 yards and two touchdowns to outduel Aaron Rodgers as the Tennessee Titans defeated the Green Bay Packers 27-17. Tannehill looked much sharper in his second game back after missing two games with an injured right ankle. He went 22 of 27 and had one interception as the Titans won for the seventh time in eight games. Rodgers went 24 of 39 for 227 yards with two touchdown passes to rookie Christian Watson. Green Bay has lost six of seven.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) — The NFL is relocating the Bills' home game against the Cleveland Browns to Detroit on Sunday because of a lake-effect snowstorm set to hit the Buffalo region. The move to relocate the game comes before the storm even began. The forecast is for between 1 to 3 feet of snow in the region through the weekend. The switch in sites means the Bills will play back-to-back games in Detroit. They’re scheduled to play the Lions on Thanksgiving.

NEW YORK (AP) — Aaron Judge of the New York Yankees has won the American League MVP award, and St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt took the NL prize. After hitting 62 home runs this season to break the AL record, Judge easily beat out Los Angeles Angels two-way phenom Shohei Ohtani in an MVP race some thought might be close. The 6-foot-7 outfielder received 28 of 30 first-place votes and two seconds for 410 points from a Baseball Writers’ Association of America panel. DOHA, Qatar (AP) — Qatar has banned the sale of beer at World Cup stadiums. It was a sudden U-turn on the deal the conservative Muslim emirate made to secure the soccer tournament only two days before the opening game. The move was the latest sign of the tension of staging the event in the autocratic country where the sale of alcohol is heavily restricted. It’s also a significant blow to World Cup beer sponsor Budweiser and raised questions about how much control FIFA retains over its tournament. When Qatar launched its bid to host the World Cup, the country agreed to FIFA’s requirements of selling alcohol in stadiums. But the details were only released in September, just 11 weeks before the first kickoff. Friday’s statement from FIFA said non-alcoholic beer will still be sold at stadiums.

Neal went for 224 yards and a touchdown against Oklahoma State, then followed up with 190 yards rushing last week against Texas Tech.

Texas: QB Quinn Ewers is coming off arguably his worst game of the season, when the Longhorns were held under 200 yards didn’t score an offensive touchdown against TCU. The freshman has completed just 45% of his passes the past three games.

Kansas: QB Jalon Daniels could return for the first time since hurting his shoulder in a loss to TCU on Oct. 8. He warmed up before the past three games, but QB Jason Bean has played every snap. Bean has thrown for at least 200 yards in five straight games with 14 TDs and four interceptions. Bean also has 222 yards and four TDs on the ground.

Kansas will be trying to beat Texas in back-to-back years for the first time. The Longhorns have won 16 of the past 18 in the series, though the Jayhawks have won two of the past five. ... They play Saturday at defending league champion Baylor, which has to win out and get a lot of help to get back in the title game. No. 19 Kansas State can join TCU in the Big 12 title game with a win at West Virginia, combined with a loss by Texas at Kansas. The Big 12 could still have all 10 of its teams get bowl eligible.

Some things to watch during Week 12 in the Big 12 Conference:

While the Horned Frogs have already clinched a spot in the Big 12 championship game, they have to keep winning to be part of the four-team College Football Playoff. For defending league champion Baylor to get back in the title game, the Bears have to beat TCU and Texas, plus have both No. 19 Kansas State and No. 24 Oklahoma State lose their last two games. TCU upset Baylor last season, with linebacker Shadrach Banks' last-minute interception sealing a 30-28 win at home the week after coach Gary Patterson's abrupt departure from the Frogs. The last time TCU was this close to the playoff, in 2014, its only loss was 61-58 at Baylor.

Chandler Morris had 531 yards of total offense (461 passing, 70 rushing) against Baylor last November in his first start as TCU's quarterback, but got hurt in this year's opener. Max Duggan has since thrown a Big 12-best 25 touchdowns with only two interceptions, while Kendre Miller has five 100-yard rushing games in a row and a TD in 11 consecutive games.

No. 19 Kansas State (7-3, 5-2, No. 15 CFP) at West Virginia (4-6, 2-5)

The Wildcats can join TCU in the Big 12 title game with a win in Morgantown, combined with a loss by Texas at Kansas. The Mountaineers need to win their last two games to get bowl eligible for fourth-year coach Neal Brown, whose job status is still in question after West Virginia fired athletic director Shane Lyons this week. The series is tied 5-5 as Big 12 members, with K-State winning last season after losing five in a row to the Mountaineers.

Texas is 16-2 against Kansas in Big 12 games, though the bowl-eligible Jayhawks won 57-56 in overtime at Austin last season. The only other KU series win in that stretch was also in OT, at home in 2007. ... Oklahoma’s 90 wins against Oklahoma State are the most by the Sooners against any opponent. The Cowboys' win last season was their 19th in a series that also has seven ties. The only FBS team with more wins over a single team is Nebraska, with 91 over Kansas

Iowa State receiver Xavier Hutchinson and defensive end Will McDonald. Hutchinson, the national leader with 9.7 catches per game and Big 12 leader with 105.9 yards receiving per game, has school records for receptions in a single season (97) and career (244). McDonald's 33 career sacks are one shy of the Big 12 record set two decades ago by Texas Tech's Aaron Hunt. Iowa State hosts the Red Raiders, who have allowed a league-high 35 sacks, 12 more than any other team.

The Big 12 could still get all 10 of its teams bowl eligible. For that to happen, there have to be some specific outcomes for Texas Tech (5-5), Oklahoma (5-5), Iowa State (4-6) and West Virginia (4-6) to all get the required six wins. Iowa State has to win against Texas Tech and TCU. That would then require the Red Raiders to win their regular-season finale against Oklahoma, which would have to win this week against Oklahoma State for its sixth win. West Virginia has to beat No. 19 Kansas State and No. 24 Oklahoma State.

CFP-chasing TCU in B12 title game, K-State could join Frogs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was missing his top three wide receivers in practice Wednesday because of injuries and illness, and the situation might not be a whole lot better when Kansas City visits the Chargers this weekend.

JuJu Smith-Schuster remained in the concussion protocol after taking a helmet-to-helmet hit from Jacksonville safety Andre Cisco in last Sunday's win over the Jaguars.

Smith-Schuster remained on the turf for several minutes before he was helped to his feet and off the field with help from teammates, and it's unlikely he will be cleared to play any time soon.

The Chiefs were also missing Mecole Hardman, who missed the 27-17 win over the Jaguars with an abdominal injury, and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, who was dealing with an illness that popped up over the past couple of days.

That left Mahomes with backup Justin Watson, rookie Skyy Moore, newcomer Kadarius Toney and special teams standout Marcus Kemp to catch passes as the Chiefs prepared for their visit to Los Angeles on Sunday night.

“We just put guys in position to succeed. For me, it's about executing the offense, finding the open guy, getting the ball out of my hands and letting them make plays,” Mahomes said. “We've seen these guys in big moments. Hopefully we get guys back later in the week, but if not, we'll be ready to roll out there.”

Yet the trio of missing wide receivers were each in the midst of their best stretches this season.

Smith-Schuster had five catches for 113 yards and a touchdown against the Bills, seven for 124 and a score against the 49ers and 10 for 88 yards against the Titans.

And he had a couple of catches early on against Jacksonville before the pass over the middle set him up for Cisco, whose shoulder and helmet hit Smith-Schuster in the head.

“We'll just take him day by day. We'll be cautious with him,” said Chiefs coach Andy Reid, adding that he had not heard from the NFL about the hit. “We're not going to do anything that you shouldn't do according to what the data shows.”

Hardman, in the midst of a contract year, had scored in three straight games with five touchdowns total over that span before missing last week's game against Jacksonville. He was targeted a season-high nine times against Tennessee.

Valdes-Scantling had three catches for 60 yards and his first TD with the Chiefs last Sunday.

Meanwhile, Moore has just seven catches for 106 yards. Watson has seven for 113 yards and two scores. And Toney has played 37 snaps total during his Kansas City career, though his performance against the Jaguars was encouraging.

Toney had four catches for 57 yards and his first NFL touchdown while adding 33 yards on the ground.

“I wasn't surprised by him making the plays,” Mahomes said, “but us being able to move him around as much as we have. It's a testament to him. He's gotten in here, he's learned multiple positions, we've moved him around — he's not in one spot.

"We're going to keep giving him more and more, and get him more and more involved in this offense, because it will make us better as the season goes on.”

Especially if the Chiefs are missing two or three of their other wide receivers.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals have selected several potential sites to build a replacement for aging Kauffman Stadium, owner John Sherman said Tuesday.

In a letter to fans posted on social media, Sherman said the sites are in or near downtown Kansas City, but he did not elaborate. Kauffman Stadium and Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs, are located far from the city's downtown.

“In the spirit of (Royals founder) Ewing Kauffman, our current mission is to look ahead to ensure that Major League Baseball and the Kansas City Royals will thrive in this region for decades to come,” Sherman said.

Sherman, who bought the team in 2019, estimated the new stadium district could cost up to $2 billion, which he said would make it the most expensive project in Kansas City history.

Sherman announced last year that the Royals were discussing whether to build a new stadium or renovate Kauffman, which will be 60 years old when the team's lease expires in 2031.

In his letter, Sherman said renovating the current stadium up to standards needed to compete with other organizations would cost as much as or more than the new stadium.

“A new home would be a far better investment, both for local taxpayer dollars already supporting our facility, and for the Kansas City community,” Sherman said.

He said supporters envision a ballpark district around the new venue, with restaurants, shops, offices, hotels and affordable housing.

After a push in the early 2000s to build a stadium downtown fizzled, Jackson County voters in April 2006 approved a sales tax increase to fund $250 million in renovations to Kauffman and Arrowhead.

The new proposal will rely on continuing the team's current public-private partnership and investment with several local jurisdictions and the state of Missouri, said Sherman, who pledged that Jackson County residents would not be asked to contribute more tax dollars to the stadium than they currently do.

The next steps will include team officials holding a listening tour throughout the area to discuss the plan and beginning discussions with local, state and federal officials about possible additional funding sources.

Royals considering several sites for new stadium, owner says

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Jalen Wilson and Dajuan Harris Jr. provided a calm, steadying influence for No. 6 Kansas on Tuesday night. Jayhawks freshman Gradey Dick provided the late splash.

Together they extended the nation's longest active winning streak.

Wilson scored a career-high 25 points, Harris dished out a career-best 10 assists and Dick made three crucial baskets in the final 2 1/2 minutes to help the defending national champs rally past No. 7 Duke 69-64.

“We didn't know where he was at times; we sent out a missing person's report in the second half," interim coach Norm Roberts joked, referring to Dick. “But this is his first real big-boy game he's played in and I thought he really responded.”

Kansas is 3-0 with Roberts filling in for suspended coach Bill Self, who will sit out the first four games because of a 2017 infractions scandal. But the results remain unchanged as the Jayhawks ran their winning streak to 14.

Wilson also grabbed 11 rebounds on a night when shooting was at a premium.

Duke (2-1) was led by Kyle Filipowski, who scored a season-high 17 points and had 14 rebounds to become the first player in school history to register double-doubles in each of his first three games. Marvin Bagley III was the only other player to do it in his first two games.

Jeremy Roach had 16 points as new coach Jon Scheyer lost for the first time.

The young Blue Devils pushed Kansas to the brink in a game that went back and forth most of the second half. Duke just couldn't finish it off.

“Before the game, we said that whoever handles the adversity better wins and I thought they did that late,” Scheyer said.

Still, the Blue Devils were in prime position when Filipowski's putback with 4:39 left gave Duke a 59-54 lead.

But Kansas scored seven straight points to take a 61-59 lead on Dick's 3-pointer with 2:21 to go. Roach answered with a 3 for Duke and then Dick scored on alley-oop play with 1:40 left to give Kansas a 63-62 edge.

The Jayhawks never trailed again, ending the game on a 15-5 run.

“ Those two guys, they never gave in,” Roberts said. “There was never any panic and that's all led by Jalen and Dajuan.”

Duke: These Blue Devils don't appear to be content taking a backseat to anybody. Despite a slow start and a poor finish, they traded jabs all night with a more experienced team. At times, they even looked more physical than Kansas — all promising signs for improvement.

Kansas: They've survived without Self — this time just barely. But the gritty Jayhawks played hard and fast and never got rattled, even when the execution wasn't great or the shots didn't fall. Even Roberts acknowledged sometimes winning ugly is what it takes.

Duke: The Blue Devils may slide a bit, but not much. Certainly not after this sort of performance just three games into a season with a first-year coach and three freshman starters.

Kansas: With No. 4 Kentucky losing earlier Tuesday and the Wildcats visiting No. 2 Gonzaga this weekend, the Jayhawks could move up a spot or two — depending on the results.

In a game of firsts, Scheyer thought his team played relatively well. It marked the first time Scheyer coached or Duke's talented freshmen class played outside Cameron Indoor Stadium. It also was their first experience against a ranked team and their first close contest. And the double-overtime game between Michigan State and Kentucky in the opener Tuesday didn't help much.

“We went out there three times to warm up,” Scheyer said. “It was the first time for a lot of different things.”

Duke: Heads home to face Delaware on Friday.

No. 6 Kansas rallies late to beat No. 7 Duke 69-64

Coming up short against the nation's top ranked team, the 15th ranked Barton Community College women's soccer team had their season end Tuesday in Evans, Georgia, on a 2-0 pool play loss to top ranked Tyler Junior College

The Cougars, making their first NJCAA National Tournament appearance, was seeded eighth in the field and coming off a 3-0 victory Monday over 12th seeded Motlow State Community College. Returning to Blanchard Woods Park for a cool and light rain filled contest, Barton was looking to avenge an early season 2-1 overtime defeat at Tyler.

The Apaches, who also defeated Motlow by a 3-0 score on Sunday, stood the Cougars' upset bid to win Pool A, advancing to Thursday's semifinals with a 22-0 unblemished record.  Barton completes the year 17-4-2 to match the program's second most wins in a season.

Barton outshot Tyler 14-6 including 9-2 in second half play and a 9-4 edge in on-frame targets but couldn't find the net against the stingy Apache defense and keeper Daniella Wilken. The Cougars forced Wilkens into four saves in the first half and five in second half play while Barton's Nia Baker came up with a save in each of the halves.

Tyler produced the game winner 21:36 into the contest, Taylor Conway surviving a battle with a Barton defender at the edge of the eighteen to keep balance enough to strike far post by the narrowness of margins past a sliding Baker.

The Cougars had multiple chances for the equalizer, not only in the first half but in the final forty-five but it just wasn't Barton's day for a big net rattler.

Esalenna Galekhutle put the dagger in Barton's hopes with 9:37 remaining on a beautifully shaped near 30-yard strike to the upper-90.

The season's ending also closes the record book impact from freshmen Nina Norshie as one of the most prolific scorers in program history and Rin Sato amongst the best distributors.

Baker closes out her Barton career with a stellar season at 14-4-2.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Royals and first baseman Ryan O'Hearn agreed to a $1.4 million contract to avoid salary arbitration Tuesday as part of a flurry of moves that set the club's 40-man roster ahead of the deadline to protect players from the Rule 5 draft.

O'Hearn, who made $1.3 million last season, can earn up to $250,000 in bonuses. He hit just .239 with one homer and 16 RBIs while in 67 games while ceding playing time last season to Nick Pratto and Vinnie Pasquantino.

The Royals selected the contracts of right-hander Alec Marsh, catcher Freddy Fermin and outfielder Diego Hernandez to protect them from the draft. Marsh was just 2-16 with a 6.88 ERA at Double-A and Triple-A last season, while Fermin hit .270 in 87 games at Triple-A and Hernandez batted .287 at Class-A and Double-A.

The Royals designated left-hander Jake Brentz, right-hander Nate Webb and outfielder Brent Rooker for assignment.
