With Kansas State's loss to Florida Atlantic in the NCAA Tournament Saturday evening, all eyes can now turn to the prep spring sports season. Great Bend High School Tennis Coach Chris Manning gets back a state qualifier, and is pleased to see a healthy number of players on this year's roster.

"Our numbers finally rebounded from the COVID shortened season," he said. "I’m excited to have options for our JV. And we are really starting to see the benefits from having a middle school program. The freshman that played in middle school will all be high on JV and possibly playing their way onto varsity. We also have a handful of first-year players, most of which have come from other sports and have added great athleticism to our line up."

The Panthers will have three returning senionrs, including returning state qualifier Brendyn Schroeder. He is joined by classmates Jordan Manning and Cameron Harbaugh.

"Brendyn is our returning state qualifier with even higher goals this year," Coach Manning said. "He is not only looking to return to state but a top-10 finish is our goal. Jordan is coming off a disappointing injury-filled season. We are first hoping for a healthy season and our team needs him to step up. Our goal is for him to make it to state as well."

The relatively young squad will have just two returning juniors in Kaden Deines and Marcos Castanon, but Manning said Castanon will be a vital player for the Panthers this spring. "He is the energy of the team," said the coach. "He keeps it fun and has been super aggressive at the net. He lost his doubles partner and we will trying to find who he works with the best."

Joel Alcala is the lone sophomore on this year's team. Incoming freshmen include: Joshua Manning, Kaden Pounds, Aaron Ramirez, Chason Ramsey, Damian Mosqueda, Fabian Guerrero, Jorge Moreno, Alexis Ayala, Jacob Parks, and Kai Britt. 

The Panthers open the season on March 28, and host an invitational at the Shannon Schartz Courts at Veterans Park on Saturday, April 1.

Several returners back on large Panther tennis roster

LAS VEGAS (AP) — March has gone from madness to unprecedented.

With Miami's win over Houston and San Diego State's takedown of Alabama on Friday night, the men's NCAA Tournament will not have a No. 1 seed in the Elite Eight for the first time since seeding began in 1979.

“There’s not a lot of difference between the best team in the country and the worst team in the country,” San Diego State coach Brian Dutcher said. “You’re seeing that on this stage.”

Purdue, Kansas, Houston and Alabama are all gone, ensuring the Final Four will not have a No. 1 team for the first time since 2011 and the third overall. The four teams deemed by the NCAA to be the best in the country combined to win five tournament games this year, the fewest by three among No. 1 seeds since the field expanded to 64 teams in 1985.

Texas is the lone No. 2 seed remaining after bouncing Xavier out of the bracket 83-71 Friday night under interim coach Rodney Terry. The fewest combined No. 1-2 seeds in the Elite Eight before this year was two (three times).

How crazy has it been? The national title game is guaranteed to have at least one of these teams: San Diego State, Creighton, Florida Atlantic or Kansas State. The Aztecs, Bluejays and Owls have never been to the Elite Eight. The Wildcats were picked to finish last in the Big 12.

It's also a lock the winning coach will be a first-time champion.

“It’s a lot of really good programs in the country that have lost — I mean, we could go down the list of them,” Alabama coach Nate Oats said. “That’s what makes the NCAA Tournament the NCAA Tournament. They’re all good teams.”

The madness started in the opening round of the East Region, when fairytale Fairleigh Dickinson wrecked brackets around the world by becoming the second No. 16 seed to beat a No. 1.

Arkansas was the next giant killer, taking down reigning national champion and West Region No. 1 seed Kansas in the second round.

The Sweet 16 turned sour on Friday for Alabama, the bracket's No. 1 overall seed. The Crimson Tide were no match for Dutcher's ball-and-body-hawking San Diego State Aztecs in a 71-64 South Region loss in Louisville, Kentucky. San Diego State is the first Mountain West Conference school to reach the Elite Eight.

Miami capped the No. 1 carnage in the Midwest Region by taking apart one of the nation's stingiest defenses in a 89-75 win over Houston in Kansas City, Missouri that had Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga dancing in the locker room.

“Unfortunately, one off-night and you go home in this tournament,” Cougars coach Kelvin Sampson said.

The 6th ranked Barton Community College women's golf team won their fifth tournament of the 2022-23 slate by scoring a thirty stroke win Thursday capturing the KJCCC's first meet of the year.

Shortened to just an eighteen hole conference opener due to Friday's weather conditions at Dodge City's Mariah Hills Golf Course, the Cougars shot a combined 29-over 313 to outdistance host Dodge City's 343, Fort Scott's 427, and Coffeyville's 442.

The teams reunite in Coffeyville for the second conference meet of the season in the projected two-day tournament beginning at 1:00 p.m. March 31 at Hillcrest Golf Course.

Barton placed their top five golfers in the top ten of the 23-competitor field, led by the 4-over 75 rounds of Pornnapa Inmee and Saya Schweitzer for each's first tournament title of the year.

Valentina Leyva tied for 4th place with an 8-over 79 as Andrea Peraza's 13-over 84 was good for 7th place.

Having won three tournaments in the fall, Yu Wei Chiang had an off day to begin the spring semester in carding a 16-over 87 for 10th place, just the third round in the 80's in the freshman's campaign.

Paulina Villavicencio led the individualist entries with an 18-over 89 for 13th place, followed one spot later in the standings by Katina Bartel's 22-over 93 and Allyson Kaiser in 16th with a 23-over 94.

The 6th ranked Barton Community College men's tennis team opened up conference play Tuesday in Liberal with a 6-3 win over 7th ranked Seward County Community College.

The Cougars grabbed a 2-1 lead from doubles action before taking four wins in singles action to pick up the victory.

Improving to 8-2 on the season, Barton will next host 12th ranked Pratt Community College on Monday in a 1:00 p.m. first serve conference dual at Veterans' Memorial Park.

Barton benefitted by the Saints down two players, Barton earning the No. 3 doubles default win for Gustavo Campos and Marno Du Plessis while also gaining victories at the No. 5 and 6 singles for Tsholofelo Tsiang and Du Plessis.

Barnabas Kalaba was 2-0 in on-court action, teaming with Tsiang in the No. 2 doubles to win 8-6 over Antoine Adamiak and Richard Patte before the 41st ranked Cougar came out on top 6-4, 6-4 against Patte at the No. 4 singles.

Joining Kalaba with on-court wins in singles play, Fernando Andre won the first set 6-3 before needing a 7-3 tiebreak to win the No. 3 matchup against Adamiak.

Andre and No. 1 doubles partner Sebastiao Vilas dropped an 8-6 decision to Filipe Krohn Silva and Seb Holden with Vilas withdrawing in the first set of the No. 2 against 37th ranked Holden.

In the No. 1 singles matchup, the Saints' Silva won 6-2, 6-2 over 22nd ranked Campos.

Barton remains unblemished on the season at 10-0 headed into Monday's 1:00 p.m. hosting of 21st ranked Pratt Community College at Veterans' Memorial Park.

Luciana Braga picked up a big straight set win in the No. 2 slot as the 20th ranked freshman knocked off the Saints' top ranked Carol Mora Camacho 6-1, 6-3.

In the No. 3 spot, 30th ranked Tshegofatso Tsiang also rolled to a straight set win on 6-4, 6-2 scores over the Saints' Jaena Morais.

Due to a game day sickness, the move up a spot to No. 5 didn't phase Ana Vasilis in registering a 6-2, 6-2 win over Camila Corrales with Ana Alice Tosetto sliding into the No. 6 spot in taking the first set 6-1 and was up 2-0 before an injury retirement by the Saints' Milica Radunovic.

Carmen Lyons and Vasilis gave Barton its lone victory in doubles play with an 8-2 win over Corrales and Radunovic.

The Cougars' top tandem of 10th ranked Clara Penido and Tsiang fell in a tight 8-6 battle with Camille Belberka and Ana Isabella Serrano while the No. 2 20th ranked duo of Braga and Azul Barrios battled through Barrios' sickness to eventually fall 9-8, 7-4 in the tiebreaker to Camacho and Morais.

Barton Men's and Women's Tennis results vs Seward County

After having their 8-game winning streak snapped in game one, the Barton Cougars rallied from a 7-4 deficit to beat Dodge City 13-7 in game two of a double header Thursday at Lawson Biggs Field.

After being limited to just seven hits and one run in a 3-1 loss in game one, Barton (24-3 5-1) found themselves trailing 7-4 in the fourth against the Conquistadors in the second game before the Cougars plated three in the bottom of the fourth to tie things at 7-7.

Barton then scored 5 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh to win the game 13-7. Robby Bowlin led the comeback with a 3-5 performance with a double and 4 rbi's while Tyrus Riley picked up the save. Riley was one of four Cougar pitchers who held Dodge (15-15 7-3) without a run over the final six innings.

The two teams resume their 4-game series in Dodge City Saturday with 1pm and 3pm games.

NJCAA National Men's Tournament scores and schedule

NEW YORK (AP) — Markquis Nowell walked the ball up the floor with the score tied in the final minute of overtime and exchanged animated hand signals with his coach, Jerome Tang.

Standing on the March Madness logo at Madison Square Garden, the 5-foot-8 Kansas State point guard who grew up in Harlem glanced at the basket for a split second and flicked a chest pass into the lane. Keyontae Johnson slipped behind the Michigan State defense, elevated with his back to the basket, grabbed the ball and slammed it down.

It was the signature play of a towering performance by the shortest player on the floor.

Nowell broke the NCAA Tournament record for assists in a game with 19, his last two on spectacular passes in the last minute of OT, and Kansas State beat Michigan State 98-93 on Thursday night in a Sweet 16 thriller.

“Today was a special one, man,” said Nowell, who fought through a second-half ankle injury. “I’ve got to give a lot to credit to my teammates for battling, for fighting through adversity when we was down. I can’t even explain how I’m feeling right now. I just know that I’m blessed and I’m grateful.”

Nowell's alley-oop to Johnson with 52 seconds left in overtime gave the Wildcats (26-9) the lead for good in this back-and-forth East Region semifinal.

“I mean, it was just a basketball play between me and Keyontae,” Nowell said. “We knew how Michigan State plays defense. They play high up, and Keyontae just told me, we got eye contact, and he was like, lob, lob. I just threw it up, and he made a great play.”

Julian Strawther hit a 3-pointer with 7.2 seconds left to answer a
3-pointer by UCLA’s Amari Bailey, lifting Gonzaga to a wild 79-76
win over UCLA in the Sweet 16. The Bruins were the West Region’s
No. 2 seed and stormed back from an eight-point deficit in the final
1:05. UCLA took a a 76-75 lead on Bailey’s 3-pointer with 12.2
seconds left. The Zags brought the ball up the floor and Strawther
stepped into a 3-pointer, sending Gonzaga fans to their feet and the
Zags into the Elite Eight.

scored 24 points for UConn and the Huskies are one step away from the
Final Four after an 88-65 rout of Arkansas 88-65 in a West Region
Sweet 16 matchup Thursday. The fourth-seeded Huskies (28-8) will play
Gonzaga in an Elite Eight game Saturday in Las Vegas. Arkansas'
season ended at 22-14. UConn played like a team capable of winning
its fifth NCAA Tournament title and first since 2014. The Huskies
have outscored their three March Madness opponents by 62 points.

coaching heavyweights. There's Kelvin Sampson of top-seeded Houston,
who has led both Oklahoma and the Cougars to the Final Four. There's

(AP) — Philadelphia Phillies first baseman Rhys Hoskins needs
surgery for a torn ACL after injuring his left knee while fielding a
grounder in a spring training game and is expected to miss a
significant amount of time. The Phillies did not say when Hoskins
would have the surgery or exactly how long the slugging first baseman
might be sidelined. Hoskins hit 30 homers with 79 RBIs last season
for the reigning National League champions. He was backing up to play
a chopper on Thursday when the ball popped out of his glove. Hoskins,
a free agent at the end of the season who turned 30 last week, hit
six homers in Philadelphia’s playoff run last season. The Phillies
lost to the Houston Astros in the World Series.

— Trevor Bauer was apparently shunned by every major league team,
so he’s signed a one-year deal with the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. On

The Barton Community College softball team bounced back from a disappointing doubleheader split last time on the field to pick up an impressive run-rule pair of victories Wednesday at Dodge City Community College.

The Cougars put up 11 runs in the second and third inning of the opener to end it 11-3 in five innings before scoring four in the sixth frame of game two to complete the conference road sweep 8-0.

Barton improves to 9-3 in conference play and 15-12 on the season while Dodge City drops to .500 in league and overall at 7-7 and 14-14.

The Cougars have their next three doubleheaders at 1:00 p.m. on the home turf of Cougar Field beginning Saturday in a conference twinbill versus Northwest Kansas Technical College followed by Monday's non-conference hosting of Cowley College before returning back to conference play on Wednesday against Garden City Community College.

Barton's pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts in the eleven innings, Jenna Henderson improving to 3-7 behind a career high 7 punchouts followed by Jessica Morgan striking out a season high 11 for the second consecutive game improving to 6-2.

Offensively the consecutive game hit streak continued for Jaysa Anderson and Halie Stoneking.

Anderson left Dodge City with her now 20 straight game hit streak, extending it in the opener on a second inning double sparking the Cougars' 6-run frame with two outs then drove in Barton's first run on a two-out first inning single.

Batting .571 at the top of the lineup in the pair of games, Stoneking drove in five runs in game one, driving in two on a two-out second inning single before belting a three-run home run in the third putting Barton up 11-2. Driving in three more in game two, the sophomore was 0-2 before crushing her team leading 8th home run of the year leading off the 5th inning before a 2-RBI double in the 6th inning putting Barton up 7-0 completing her now 16-game hit streak.

Sydni Williams and Ireland Cotton each went .500 on the afternoon, Williams going 3-for-6 with three RBI's including her 5th home run of the year following Stoneking's leadoff dinger in the fifth with a two-out solo shot while Cotton went 2-for-4 in game two driving in two.

 </figure>By TODD MOORE Barton Sports InfoThe Barton Community College softball team bounced back from a disappointing doubleheader split last time on the field to pick up an impressive run-rule pair of victories Wednesday at Dodge City Community College.The Cougars put up 11 runs in the second and third inning of the opener to end it 11-3 in five innings before scoring four in the sixth frame of game two to complete the conference road sweep 8-0.Barton improves to 9-3 in conference play and 15-12 on the season while Dodge City drops to .500 in league and overall at 7-7 and 14-14.The Cougars have their next three doubleheaders at 1:00 p.m. on the home turf of Cougar Field beginning Saturday in a conference twinbill versus Northwest Kansas Technical College followed by Monday's non-conference hosting of Cowley College before returning back to conference play on Wednesday against Garden City Community College.Barton's pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts in the eleven innings, Jenna Henderson improving to 3-7 behind a career high 7 punchouts followed by Jessica Morgan striking out a season high 11 for the second consecutive game improving to 6-2.Offensively the consecutive game hit streak continued for Jaysa Anderson and Halie Stoneking.Anderson left Dodge City with her now 20 straight game hit streak, extending it in the opener on a second inning double sparking the Cougars' 6-run frame with two outs then drove in Barton's first run on a two-out first inning single.Batting .571 at the top of the lineup in the pair of games, Stoneking drove in five runs in game one, driving in two on a two-out second inning single before belting a three-run home run in the third putting Barton up 11-2. Driving in three more in game two, the sophomore was 0-2 before crushing her team leading 8th home run of the year leading off the 5th inning before a 2-RBI double in the 6th inning putting Barton up 7-0 completing her now 16-game hit streak.Sydni Williams and Ireland Cotton each went .500 on the afternoon, Williams going 3-for-6 with three RBI's including her 5th home run of the year following Stoneking's leadoff dinger in the fifth with a two-out solo shot while Cotton went 2-for-4 in game two driving in two.

March Madness has reached Sweet 16 weekend. Two No. 1 seeds, Kansas and Purdue, are already gone along with millions of busted brackets and a host of bluebloods including Kentucky, Duke and Indiana —though UCLA's drive for a 12th national title remains alive. Here is what to know:

No. 4 seed Connecticut (27-8) vs. No. 8 seed Arkansas (22-13), Thursday, 7:15 p.m. ET (CBS)

The Huskies reached the Sweet 16 for the first time in nine years after outclassing Saint Mary’s behind 24 points by Adama Sanogo and timely 3-point shooting. The Razorbacks of coach Eric Musselman will look for another signature win — and perhaps a breakout game from Nick Smith Jr. — after ousting defending champion and top-seeded Kansas.

No. 2 Kansas State (25-9) vs. No. 7 Michigan State (21-12), Thursday, 6:30 p.m. ET (TBS)

Tom Izzo and Michigan State are in the Sweet 16 for the 15th time and first in four years after beating No. 2 seed Marquette. At Madison Square Garden — in a New York City reunion for players on both teams — the Spartans will face a Kansas State team that was picked to finish last in the Big 12 under first-year coach Jerome Tang but got 27 points from Markquis Nowell in dumping Kentucky.

No. 5 seed San Diego State (29-6) vs. No. 1 seed Alabama (31-5), Friday, 6:30 p.m. ET (TBS)

The Aztecs are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2004 and have won 11 of their last 13. They will need balanced scoring against the Crimson Tide, who handily dispatched Maryland. All-America freshman Brandon Miller, who is playing in the shadow of a fatal shooting case back in Alabama, had 19 after going scoreless in the first round.

No. 3 seed Xavier (27-9) vs. No. 2 seed Texas (28-8), Friday, 9:45 p.m. ET (CBS)

The Musketeers are in the Sweet 16 for the first time since 2017 and will face a Texas team that hasn’t been there in 15 years. Xavier put on a clinic on unselfishness in the first half of its 84-73 victory against Pittsburgh, totaling 17 assists on 19 made field goals. The Longhorns made just one 3-pointer in 13 tries in their 71-66 victory against Penn State, but Dylan Disu had a season-high 28 points.

Princeton used a late run to earn its first NCAA Tournament win in 25 years by ousting No. 2 seed Arizona and then beat Missouri to lock in its first Sweet 16 spot in 56 years. For Princeton and other teams, getting this far after pandemic-disrupted seasons is a milestone.

Furman celebrated its first tourney appearance since 1980 with a win over No. 4 seed Virginia on a deep 3-pointer by JP Pegues with 2.4 seconds left. Then came 16-seed Fairleigh Dickinson's win over Purdue as the 22 1/2-point underdog joined UMBC in the record books.

All that happened before the Razorbacks and shirtless coach Eric Musselman celebrated their win over the Jayhawks.

The SEC and Big Ten led the way by placing eight teams each in the 68-team field. Conference USA (Florida Atlantic) and the Ivy League (Princeton) each got one team into the tournament. The records through two rounds:

Coaches have been thrust into uncertain and unwelcome roles in trying to navigate the topic — as well as the fallout from the Supreme Court decision to overturn Roe vs. Wade.

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan State coach Tom Izzo is not a big fan of the transfer portal, lamenting that it gives young athletes an easy out instead of an opportunity to overcome challenges.

“I’ll say until the day I die, I do not see anything good for the players in it,” Izzo said Tuesday.

The seventh-seeded Spartans, however, would not be in the Sweet 16 for the 15th time under their Hall of Fame coach without former Northeastern guard Tyson Walker and ex-Marquette forward Joey Hauser.

The Spartans, of course, are not alone in relying on transfers. Not anymore. They are all over March Madness.

Third-seeded Kansas State, which will face the Spartans on Thursday night in New York, has relied heavily on transfers with 12 on its roster under first-year coach Jerome Tang. Former Florida forward Keyontae Johnson and ex-Arkansas-Little Rock guard Markquis Nowell, both of whom earned third-team All-America recognition, are starring for the Wildcats.

UCLA and Princeton are bucking the trend because they’re still in the Tournament without a transfer player.

Izzo could have dipped back into the portal to bolster this season's team after losing his top three scorers and a solid post player from last year's team. Instead, he chose to stick with the players he had after they chose to stay.

“There’s something they believed in here,” Izzo said. “That’s the beauty of sticking together. And if it carries us through the weekend, it’ll be one of the great life lessons learned."

No. 4 seed Tennessee vs. No. 9 seed Florida Atlantic

Like many transfers, Tyreke Key left a smaller program (Indiana State) for a bigger one and the Volunteers are glad he did. After sophomore point guard Zakai Zeigler tore a knee ligament in the final week of the regular season, Key became even more valuable for the postseason.

Vladislav Goldin, meanwhile, went against the grain by leaving a larger school for a mid-major program. The 7-foot-1, shot-blocking Russian bolted from Texas A&amp;M to play for the Owls in search of more playing time. He found what he was looking at FAU, starting in 33 games.

Four of San Diego State's top five scorers are transfers, including former California standout Matt Bradley, who is averaging a team-high 13 points per game.

No. 6 seed Creighton vs. No. 15 seed Princeton

The Bluejays have two transfers, two more than the Tigers. Baylor Scheierman starts and Francisco Farabello comes off the bench for Creighton. Scheierman was the Summit League player of the year last year at South Dakota State and Farabello played at TCU for three seasons.

No. 1 seed Houston vs. No. 5 seed Miami

The Courgars have recruited and developed most of their best players, but former Arkansas forward Reggie Chaney is in the rotation. The Hurricanes second-, third- and fourth-leading scorers are transfers: Jordan Miller (George Mason), Norchad Omier (Arkansas State) and Nijel Pack (Kansas State).

No. 2 seed Texas vs. No. 3 seed Xavier

The Longhorns often have four transfers in their starting lineup and leading scorer, Marcus Carr, has left two schools. The former Pittsburgh and Minnesota guard along with ex-New Mexico State guard Sir’Jabari Rice, the team's second-leading scorer, are in their sixth season of college. Carr and Rice took advantage of an extra year of eligibility that the NCAA gave athletes if they were in school when the pandemic started.

Souley Boum, who started his career at San Francisco and went on to become a star at New Mexico State, leads the Musketeers with 16.5 points a game and is also in his sixth year of college. Former Iowa forward Jack Nunge, ex-Belmont guard Adam Kunkel and former Indiana forward Adam Kunkel are also among Xavier's top players.

No. 2 seed UCLA vs. No. 3 seed Gonzaga

While the Bruins have no transfers, the Zags have Rasir Bolton, who ranks fourth on the team in scoring, played at Penn State and for Iowa State before landing at Gonzaga. Malachi Smith went from Wright State to Chattanooga before choosing a lesser role at Gonzaga.

No. 4 seed UConn vs. No. 8 seed Arkansas

The Huskies' backcourt is full of transfers. Former East Carolina star Tristen Newton runs the point, averaging 10-plus points and nearly five assists per game. Grad student Joey Calcaterra spent four years at San Diego and Nahiem Alleyne was a three-year starter at Virginia Tech.

The Razorbacks are in the Sweet 16 for a third straight year in part because coach Eric Musselman has made good use of the portal. Former Wichita State guard Ricky Council leads Arkansas in scoring and Makhi Mitchell, who played at Maryland and Rhode Island, is one of team's top rebounders and scores seven points a game.
