The Barton Community
College women's track and field team gained valuable outdoor
experience competing in a number of events for the first time this
weekend.

At the Friends
University Open in Wichita, seven competed in either the outdoor
season for the first time or competed in a new event for the first
time.

Six personal or
season bests were set during the meet including the new nationally
qualifying throw by Kelsi Murrell-Ross in the discus. Marking a
program 10th best throw last year, Murrell-Ross's first time in the
event for the sophomore campaign won the event on a 42.85m (140-7)
throw as Treneese Hamilton's personal best of 35.02m (114-11) placed
10th as Lillian Thomas finished 18th at 32.11m (105-4).

A pair of first time
400m outdoor competitors took 5th and 8th place, Antiana Walsh
clocking a 57.62 with Oarabile Tshosa timing a 57.91.

Barton also grabbed
a pair of sixth place finishes, Efe Latham in the hammer throw
(47.41m, 155-7) with Kayleigh Prentiss in the high jump (1.57m,
5-01.75).

On Friday Naiya
Morgan took on the loaded Clyde Littlefield Texas Relay field in the
100m, setting a new personal best 11.75 for 24th overall to better
her already nationally qualified performance time.

The Cougars return
to Texas on Thursday to compete in the three day Jo Meaker Classic
and Multi hosted by West Texas A&amp;M in Canyon, Texas.

Barton women's track and field continues outdoor season at Wichita

KANSAS CITY, MO. (AP) — Joey Gallo hit two home runs, Joe Ryan gave up one run over six innings and the Minnesota Twins completed a sweep of the Kansas City Royals with a 7-4 victory on Sunday.

Gallo hit his first home run of the game in the sixth inning and in the next frame belted a three-run blast over the right field bullpen to extend the Twins' lead to 6-1. It was his 16th career multi-homer game.

“Obviously, you want to start off well and it's really early, but I wanted to help my team and I felt like I wasn't contributing as much as I wanted to the first couple of games, but it's good to have a good day today,” Gallo said. “We've been working a lot and even worked after the game for like 30 to 45 minutes yesterday with all the hitting coaches. I've been feeling pretty good, so hopeful keep that going.”

After failing to score in the first two games of the season, the Royals finally got a run in the second inning on Edward Olivares' homer. That broke a 19-inning scoreless streak — the team's longest drought to start a season in franchise history.

“You hope it is momentum, but tomorrow is a new day," Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "Just because you don’t get runs one day doesn’t mean you can’t the next and vice versa. These guys are working hard, the mood was good and the work before that game was good so it is not something to be concerned about.”

The home run was the only blemish for Ryan (1-0). He went six innings, struck out six and allowed one earned run, three hits and two walks. Brad Keller (0-1) threw 4 ⅔ innings, giving up two earned runs, five hits, four walks and fanned six.

“As he found his off-speed pitches, the game changed for him,” Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I think he was battling himself for a little bit and probably only had one pitch to work with in the first couple of innings.”

In his first start as a Royal, Matt Duffy hit a two-run homer to left field into the fountains, but it wasn’t enough for Kansas City.

“I think we showed some signs (of offensive momentum) today," Duffy said. "The beginning of the season is tough because everyone is looking for that first hit. Once you get that out of the way, you can settle into the season. It was a tough first couple of games, but adjustments were made, which is what you look for in a young team.”

The Twins swept their opening series for the first time since 2017, when they also did it against Kansas City.

The Kansas City trio of MJ Melendez, Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino is a combined 1-for-28 with 10 strikeouts to start its second-year campaigns.

“If those guys are on base, it is easier to score runs," Quatraro said. “If they can get on, we have a better chance of scoring.”

Gallo blasts 2 homers, Twins sweep Royals with 7-4 win

Two for two is a hall of fame average. After qualifying
one relay team for state in the first meet of the season, the Lady Panther
swimmers did it again Thursday at Campus in Haysville. The host Colts won the
meet with 591 points. Great Bend followed with 491 points, still well-ahead of
third-place El Dorado with 269 points. The Lady Panthers did not compete in the
diving competition.

The 200-yard medley relay already qualified for state.
Three of those four swimmers are now headed to state in the 200-yard free relay
after a four-second win in 1:52.50 Thursday. Emilee Hall, Elly Somers, and
Josephine Mazouch were joined by Kamryn Johns for the win. A 2:11 was needed to
automatically qualify. The 400-yard free relay team of Hall, Mazouch, Somers,
and Johns placed second in 4:14.02, 16 seconds behind the winners from Campus,
and just three seconds behind state qualification.

Clarise Snapp, who qualified in the other relay in meet
one, finished second in the 200-yard IM in 2:54.38, 30 seconds behind a future
state swimmer from Campus. Somers placed second in the 100-yard fly in 1:09.49
to miss the gold by six seconds, and Hall swam fourth in 1:12.65.

The Lady Panthers took three of the top-five spots in the
100-yard breast. Somers led the trio in 1:21.09 for the silver, just two
seconds from the win. Snapp followed her in 1:21.32, and Ava Gregg placed fifth
in 1:29.45. Somers missed the state qualification time by four seconds.

Hall swam third in the 200-yard free in 2:20.18 to miss
the silver by three-plus seconds. Braylee Carper placed fifth in 2:28.62.
Mazouch won the 50-yard free bronze in 27.91 to miss the silver by a second.
Johns placed fourth in 28.78.

Mazouch won another bronze in the 100-yard free in
1:02.56 to miss the silver by two seconds. Johns finished behind her in
1:04.25. Carper finished third in the 500-yard free in 6:48.65 to miss the
silver by 35 seconds. Reggie Huslig finished third in the 100-yard back in
1:20.15, eight seconds behind the silver.

Lady Panther swim team qualifies another relay to state

For the second consecutive matchup, the Barton Community College softball team completed a season series sweep over an opponent as Saturday the Cougars registered run-rule 10-1 and 8-0 victories at Seward County Community College.

Trailing 1-0 after the first frame of the doubleheader, the Cougars tied it up in the second before plating seven in the fifth then put the game away in the sixth by tacking on another pair of runs. Connecting on twelve hits in the opener, Barton pounded out another 14 in game two in putting four on the board in their first at-bat, adding another pair in the second, then drove in the final two in the top of the fifth to complete the team's sixth shutout of the year and second over the Saints in the four meetings.

The victories improve Barton to 15-3 in conference play and 22-13 overall while Seward County drops to 7-13 in league and 12-24 on the year.

The Cougars' next games come in a 1:00 p.m. Wednesday hosting of Pratt Community College before road games at Colby Community College on Friday followed by Wednesday's, April 12, trip to Hutchinson Community College.

Barton's top two hitters on the season combined for ten of the squad's 26 hits in the eleven innings played while the Cougars' pitching duo surrendered just five combined hits.

Going 5-of-8 out of the leadoff spot, Halie Stoneking drove in three and belted her team leading 10th home run of the season.

Extending her consecutive game hit streak to 28 straight, Jaysa Anderson also had a pair of multi-hit games for a 5-for-7 afternoon with four runs batted in.

Reigning national and conference pitcher of the week Jessica Morgan improved to 8-2 with the game one victory behind six strikeouts with Jenna Henderson following with a two-hit, four strikeout game improving to 5-8 on the year.

The Lady Cougars have now won 5-straight and 9 or their last 10 games.

A leadoff single scoring on consecutive ground outs was the first run of the day and last for the Saints as Morgan locked down surrendering just another two hits the rest of the way and struck out six.

Anderson led off the Cougars' top of the second to extend her hit streak with the first of her three hits in the contest, scoring on Leslie Ramos' two-out single to tie it up.

Barton broke open the game in the fifth with seven runs, beginning with Stoneking's drive out of the park for her 10th of the year. Laci Dryden's single and Calli McConnell's walk ensued with Anderson's two RBI single putting the Cougars ahead for good. Kayden Smith's single loaded up the bags with Morgan's walk pushing in the fourth run.

Not done with two outs in the frame, Lani Dryden's single plated two more with Stoneking's ensuing hit driving in two for an 8-1 lead.

In the final sixth, McConnell's leadoff walk and Sydni Williams' double set up the frame with Anderson completing her three RBI game by driving the pair home on a single to seal the contest.

Laci Dryden sparked the Cougars' four-run opening frame lacing a triple to center, scoring one batter later on McConnell's first of three RBIs in the contest. Anderson's two-out single extended the frame, as well as, the hit streak to 28 straight to score on Smith's reach on error.

Henderson, who gave up just two hits in the game from the circle, helped her cause with a two RBI double closing out Barton's first at-bat with four runs.

Stoneking's second inning leadoff single in standing on third after a two-base Saints error from her scorched earth connection, trotted home an out later on McConnell's hit. Williams' first of two hits in the game followed, with Anderson's liner to the outfield plating the second run of the frame for a 6-0 lead.

Lady Cougars extend winning streak to 5 with sweep at Seward County

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Taiyanna Jackson had 17 points and career-high tying 21 rebounds — her fourth consecutive double-double and 23rd of the season — Zakiyah Franklin added 19 points and Kansas beat Columbia 66-59 Saturday to win the WNIT championship.

Chandler Prater added nine points, 11 rebounds and four steals for Kansas (25-11) and Wyvette Mayberry scored 12 points. The Jayhawks finished with their most wins since the 1997-98 team that also won 25 games and set a program record for home wins in a season with 19.

This season Kansas made its first appearance in the AP Top 25 in nearly a decade after the Jayhawks — who won 21 games last season and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2013 — set a program record with 10 consecutive wins to open the season.

Columbia (28-6) struggled offensively against the length and athleticism of the Kansas defense. The Lions, who went into the game ranked No. 13 nationally in scoring offense (78.8 per game) and No. 12 in rebound margin (plus-8.5), were held to fewer than 60 points for just the third time this season and outrebounded (49-41) for just the fourth time.

Franklin scored eight straight Kansas points in a 12-5 spurt that gave the Jayhawks a 29-25 lead — the largest by either team to that point — with a minute to go in the first half. After Kitty Henderson hit a 3 for the Lions, Chandler Prater's jumper made it 31-28 at intermission. Henderson hit a 3-pointer, Abbey Hsu made a jumper and Jaida Patrick added another 3 in the first 68 seconds of the third quarter to put Columbia ahead by five before a 15-0 spurt gave Kansas the lead for good.

Columbia missed 10 consecutive field goals and made just one of its next 15 from the field after Patrick's 3 and Kansas never trailed over the final 18 minutes.

Hsu led the Lions with 19 points and Kaitlyn Davis scored 13. Hsu finished the season with 606 points, two shy of the program record set by Camille Zimmerman in 2016-17.

Jackson had three blocks to extend her single-season Kansas record to 109.

Columbia is the first team in Ivy League history to advance to the WNIT's championship game. Last year, the Lions were the first team in conference history to make it to the Great Eight, where they fell to Seton Hall, 78-75.

Columbia’s 28 wins this season are a new program record, three more than the previous record set last year when the Lions went 25-7.

Kansas women beat Columbia 66-59, win WNIT championship

Ricardo Sanchez drove in four of his eight runs behind his third career grand slam and Ayden Blachowicz pieced together a 4-of-6 day at the plate driving in three to lead the 13th ranked Barton Community College baseball team to a four-game sweep over Pratt Community College Saturday afternoon at Jimmy Lawson-Danny Biggs Field.

In the opener, a three run bases clearing Blachowicz triple and Sanchez grand-slam highlighted an eight run third inning helping the Cougars to a 14-4 fifth inning run rule victory. Barton received balanced production in the series finale as eight of the nine in the lineup produced a hit finishing off the series sweep 11-3.

Securing their third straight Jayhawk West series victory in as many chances, the Cougars sit atop the conference standings at 11-1 and 30-3 overall while the Beavers drop to 6-10 in league play and 17-19 overall. Barton will continue its' homestead Tuesday stepping out of conference play with a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader against the Tabor University JV before concluding the six-game homestead Thursday at 1:00 p.m. against conference foe Seward County Community College.

Trailing 4-2 entering the bottom of the third, the Cougar offense broke through with an eight-run response to grab their first and only lead needed. A pair of walks to Sanchez and Miller sprinkled between a Quinton Robertson double to open the frame loaded the bases with no-outs. Needing just one pitch, Barton jumped out front 5-4 on Blachowicz bases clearing triple down the right field line before coming home four pitches later on Dryden Howse sacrifice fly.

The inning prolonged as back-to-back two-out Grant Nottlemann and Robby Bolin hit-by-pitches and Beaver error created a Sanchez grand slam to straight away center for his team leading fourth home run of the season extending the Cougar lead to 10-4.

Barton increased the lead in the bottom of the fourth with four runs, all scored with two outs in the inning. Henry Hayman started the two-out rally with a single to left driving home a Blachowicz one-out single. Nottlemann increased the lead bringing across his second run of the game legging out a triple to center while coming home on the Beavers second error allowing Silva to reach base. Robertson produced his second run driven in the hard way capping the Cougar scoring drawing the third hit-by-pitch in the inning and second straight plunking.

Utilizing two pitchers, starter Tegan Cain (4-1) earned the victory working 3.2-innings scattering five hits, four runs (three earned), walked three and struck out four. Ivan Cox tossed the final 1.1-innings getting out of a key jam with two on and two-outs in the fourth with his lone strikeout.

Locked in a 1-1 tie entering the bottom of the fifth, the fourth straight single coming off the bat of Jaden Wiley on a two-out hit and run, broke the deadlock giving Barton a 2-1 lead.

The Cougars stretched the margin out to 4-1 behind another two-out rally in the bottom of the sixth as a wild pitch moved Hayman and Bolin walks into scoring position before jogging home on Sanchez single to left.

Grabbing a 5-1 advantage on a two-out Beaver error allowing Blachowicz leadoff walk to score, Pratt cut the lead back to a pair, 5-3 on a two-run home run to left in the seventh.

Answering the call in the home half of the seventh, Barton got the runs right back as Sanchez produced the first of three straight doubles bringing around a Bolin walk and Silva hit-by-pitch. Robertson swapped places with Sanchez just two pitches later before moving to third on Blachowicz double and scoring on Wiley's sacrifice fly. The Cougars final two runs came on RBI singles by Hayman and Owen Bailey which extended Bailey's hitting streak to six straight games after coming to the plate 0-for-2 prior.

13th ranked Cougars reach 30-win mark with weekend sweep of Pratt

The 7th ranked Barton Community College women's golf team cruised to its second straight conference win and sixth tournament victory of the year on Saturday with a 53 stroke victory at Coffeyville's Hillcrest Golf Course.

Battling 30mph winds gusting to 50mph in Friday's 333 round, Saturday's final round began with cold temperatures as a slow start resulted in a 331 round to finish the tournament at 88-over 664. Dodge City finished in second at 717 with Fort Scott carding an 838 and host Coffeyville accumulating a 877.

The teams reunite in Fort Scott for the third and final conference meet of the season April 7-8 at Woodland Hills Golf Course in also serving as the final tune-up for the Region VI/Plains District Championship held April 24-25.

Pornnapa Inmee won her second straight meet to lead the Cougars to a 1-2-3 finish and five in the top seven, moving into the top spot by following an opening 84 with the lone round in the 80's at a 79 to finish at 18-over 162.

Three strokes back in second was Saya Schweitzer, who tied Inmee last week for the tournament title, carding 84 and 81 rounds for a 21-over 165 for the runner-up position.

Yu Wei Chiang held the round one lead with a 10-over 82 round but fell into third on Saturday with an 85 to finish up at 23-over 167.

Andrea Peraza and Valentina Leyva took different paths in finishing tied for 7th at 30-over 174, Peraza bettering her opening 88 with an 86 while Leyva's day one fourth place carding an 84 slid down three spots with a closing 90.

Individualist Allyson Kaiser strung consistent 94-96 rounds for a 46-over 190 in placing 14th overall while Paulina Villavicencio's 98-100 cards led to a 16th placing at 54-over 198.

7th ranked Barton women's golf cruises to second straight conference win

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Sonny Gray and four relievers combined on a four-hitter, and the Minnesota Twins beat the Kansas City Royals 2-0 on Saturday to open with consecutive shutouts for the first time in franchise history.

Jose Miranda had an early RBI single, and pinch-hitter Kyle Farmer added a sacrifice fly. Byron Buxton scored twice.

Gray (1-0) allowed three hits and had a strikeout and four walks, all of which came in full-count situations. Jorge Alcalá, Griffin Jax, Caleb Thielbar and Jorge López also held the Royals scoreless. Thielbar struck out three, and López got his first save of the year.

The Twins and original Washington Senators had never opened with consecutive shutouts.

“How can you not be pleased with not giving up any runs, pitching and defense?" Twins manager Rocco Baldelli said. “I couldn’t be happier with all the guys we’ve brought into the game and how they have been pitching. Combine that with the plays the guys are making behind them and it has looked good.”

Kansas City is 0 for 14 with runners in scoring position in its first two games.

Miranda singled to center in the first to score Buxton. Farmer came on as a pinch hitter in the sixth and hit a sacrifice fly to center, also scoring Buxton.

Christian Vázquez went 2 for 3 with a pair of singles. Buxton also had two hits.

“It is incredible watching him play and seeing what he does,” Farmer said.

In his Royals debut, Jordan Lyles (0-1) threw 5 1/3 innings and gave up two runs — one earned — on five hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

“His stuff was good and pace was good,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. "I thought he had some good curveballs below the bats and overall you couldn’t ask for much more.”

Salvador Perez had a double in the fifth and a single in the eighth. The Royals left eight men on base with four hits.

“We got some opportunities today, but it’s part of the game," Perez said.

Franmil Reyes became the first Royals batter called for a timer violation, during the start of his at-bat with the bases loaded in the third inning. He struck out.

JXander Bogaerts hit a two-run homer and Matt Carpenter added a
two-run double to back fellow newcomer Michael Wacha and lead the
Padres to their first victory this season, 8-4 against the Colorado
Rockies on Saturday. The Padres lost consecutive games to the Rockies
before playing up to the high expectations they have after making a
run to the NL Championship Series last season and then signing
Bogaerts to a $280 million, 11-year deal.

since the 1997-98 team that also won 25 games and set a program
record for home wins in a season with 19. Abbey Hsu led the Lions

UConn doled out another drama-free basketball beatdown, getting 21
points and 10 rebounds from Adama Sanogo to dispatch Miami 72-59 and
move one win from the school’s fifth national title. Jordan Hawkins
overcame his stomach bug and scored 13 for the Huskies, who came into
this most unexpected Final Four as the only team with any experience
on college basketball’s final weekend. In the title game, the
Huskies will face San Diego State, which became the first team to hit
a buzzer beater while trailing in a Final Four game for a 72-71
victory over Florida Atlantic.

Lamont Butler made a jumper at the buzzer, sending San Diego State to
its first national championship game with a 72-71 win over fellow
mid-major Florida Atlantic in the Final Four. With FAU leading by
three, San Diego State’s Jaedon LeDee hit a short jumper to cut it
to 71-70. After FAU’s Johnell Davis missed a contested layup, the
Aztecs didn’t call timeout and got the ball to Butler. He worked
the clock down and before hitting the shot that sent the Aztecs
racing out onto the floor. San Diego State will face UConn in
Monday’s championship game.

DALLAS (AP) —
Caitlin Clark's 100th career game at Iowa will come in the national
championship game. The Hawkeyes will be looking for their first title
when they take on LSU on Sunday. She will be back next season. As a
21-year-old junior, she's not eligible for the WNBA draft.

Shaka Smart was
voted the AP men's basketball coach of the year after leading
Marquette to regular-season and Big East Tournament titles. He
received 24 of 58 votes from a national panel to beat out Kansas
State coach Jerome Tang, who had 13 votes, and Kelvin Sampson of
Houston, who received 10. The voting began with the conclusion of the
regular season and closed before the start of the NCAA Tournament.
The Golden Eagles were a No. 2 seed and lost in the second round to
Michigan State. Smart is the second Marquette coach to win AP coach
of the year after Al McGuire in 1971.

Sunday Sports Headlines and Scores presented by Barton Community College

Great Bend’s 2023 track and field season opener was not
ideal. Wind, rain, and even hail played a factor Friday afternoon in Junction
City. But the Lady Panthers made the most of the adversity, scoring 152 points
to dominate the meet 36 points ahead of second-place Manhattan. The script
flipped on the boys’ side with Manhattan scoring 175 points, and Great Bend
finishing second with 114.5 points to beat third-place Salina Central by 10
points.

The Lady Panthers picked up several golds on the day.
Junior Eliana Beckham won the 800m run by eight seconds in 2:35.29. Kate
Welcher ran third in 2:45.40, and Cassie Ellegood placed fourth in 2:46.24. The
Great Bend distance runners saw the state’s best in Salina Central sophomore
Katelyn Rupe. Addy Nicholson placed third in the 1600m run in 6:04.13, eight
seconds behind the silver. She ran third in the 3200m run in 12:42.73, 15
seconds out of second.

Many of Class 5A’s top hurdlers were in action at the
meet. Hutchinson’s Anne Cullens, a state champion out of 4A’s Wellington and
the current state leader, won the 100s in 14.17. Lady Panther junior Makenzie
Premer followed in 16.38, and Hailey Peterson ran sixth in 18.41. Cullens won
the 300s in 46.09, followed by Lady Panther junior Sadie Spray in 48.79, and
Premer in 49.90 for the bronze.

All three relays performed well. The 4x400 team won by
five seconds in 4:14.79. The 4x100 squad placed second, less than a second from
the god in 53.14. The 4x800 team raced only against Manhattan, finishing two
seconds behind the pace in 10:57.70.

The high jumpers continued their dominance. Spray and
Valarie Luna each cleared 5-2 to win the tough field. Ellegood cleared 5-0 for
fourth place.

Senior Kyndall Blessing led the throwers with a gold in
the javelin, beating the field by 16 feet on a toss of 127-1. Freshman Miya
Nachtigal placed fifth at 100-7. Blessing finished fifth in the shot on a throw
of 32-3.25 to miss the bronze by two feet. Rylie Duvall finished 10th
with a throw of 28-8.5.

Regehr leads boys with pair of golds Senior Madison Regehr, fresh off his signing to Cloud
County Community College, paced the boys with a pair of golds in the hurdle
events. He won the 100s by half a second in 15.78, and posted one of the top
times in Kansas to win the 300s by more than two seconds in 41.27. Regehr was
also part of the 4x400m team that won the silver in 3:32.83, just 0.07 seconds
behind the winners from Manhattan.

Cayden Scheuerman saw tough competition in the sprints,
nearing a sub-11 time with the 100m dash bronze in 11.01. He ran fourth in the 200m
dash in 22.83, just 0.05 seconds behind the bronze. Junior Ramiro Rocho ran
strong in the 400m dash, finishing third in 56.61 to miss the silver by 0.16
seconds.

Senior Kaiden Esfeld won a pair of silvers in the mid-distance
events. His 800m time of 2:06.27 came up four seconds shy of the gold, and he
ran 4:45.99 in the 1600m run to miss the win by six seconds.

In the field, senior Oliver Dominquez made a strong debut
in the triple jump with the win by 10 inches at 42-9.5. Scheuerman reached 20-0
in the long jump to miss the bronze by four inches.

Senior Mathew Moeder collected the javelin gold by
13-plus feet on a throw of 164-5. Junior Matthew Johnson finished fourth at
124-6 to miss the bronze by less than three feet. Moeder’s shot put toss of
43-1.5 was good enough for sixth, two-plus feet short of the bronze.

Lady Panthers win, boys finish second at Junction City meet

The Lady Panther softball team got some late-game heroics from Katherine Mazouch in game one against Hutchinson Friday at the Sports Complex. The Salthawks were still able to steal a 6-5 win in extra innings, but Great Bend bounced back in game two to win 17-6.&nbsp;

Hutchinson led 5-0 after five at bats in game one. The Lady Panthers scratched across a pair of runs in the fifth but still trailed 5-2 with one down in the bottom of the seventh. Analiz Rivas and Denver Ringo singled to set up Mazouch's 3-run, game-tying home run. Outs came fast in the extra frames, and Hutchinson's home run in the ninth inning proved to be the difference.

Mazouch was an offensive force with four of the 12 Great Bend hits, including the big home run. Paige Thexton and DeShawnna Bryant each singled twice. Thexton went all nine innings in the circle, striking out 10 but allowing six earned runs on 10 hits and walking five.

Hits came freely in game two as the sides combined for 36 hits. Great Bend accounted for 24 of those hits, including eight doubles. The result was a 6-run first inning and seven more in the sixth to end the game early with the first win of the season.

Halle Post led the way with four hits, all singles, and three RBIs. Bryant doubled for two of her three hits, and Ringo also doubled twice and singled. Rivas, Mazouch, Kamryn Koelsch, and Alyssa McCauley each doubled and singled twice.

Braelyn Turner picked up the win in the circle, throwing all six innings and allowing six earned runs on 12 hits. She struck out seven and walked three.

The Lady Panthers move to 1-3 overall with a game at Liberal next Tuesday. Great Bend will host the Lady 'Skins in a double-dip on April 6.

Lady Panther softball secures first win of season

The biggest opponent in Friday's home opener may have been the wind. After a pair of losses at Kapaun to open the season, the Panther baseball team made its home debut Friday with a pair of run-rule wins against Hutchinson. Great Bend took game one 13-3, then won the nightcap 16-6.

Eleven of the 13 Panther runs in game one came in the first three innings, including a 6-run third. Senior Tyler Stuhlsatz homered on the second pitch of the season. He stayed hot Friday with three hits in game one Friday, including a triple and double. He drove in two and scored four times. Daxton Minton singled twice and drove in four runs, JJ Grove and Carson Umphres singled and doubled, and Koehn Ribordy singled twice.

Umphres threw all five innings for the win, allowing three earned runs on 10 hits. He struck out three and walked a batter.

Hutchinson scored the first four runs of game two. The Panthers answered with four runs in the second inning, then went on to lead 7-5 with two runs in the fourth. But it was a 9-run sixth inning that ended things early.

Ian Premer and Hunter Herrman each tripled and singled. Umphres doubled and singled and drove in three runs. Grove and Bradley Hopkins each tripled for their lone hits. Hopkins also walked twice and came around to score three times. Stuhlsatz, Slade Mohr, and Edwin Chavez each had two hits.

Herrman picked up the win, throwing 3.1 innings of hitless ball to close out the Salthawks. He struck out five and walked two. Owen Kaiser allowed four earned runs on three hits while striking out five in nearly three innings of work as the starter.&nbsp;

The Panthers take a 2-2 record on the road to Liberal Friday, then return to the Great Bend Sports Complex against Hays on Tuesday, April 11.

Twins bring 1-0 series lead over Royals into game 2

DALLAS (AP) — Caitlin Clark had another sensational game with 41 points to help Iowa spoil South Carolina’s perfect season with a 77-73 victory in the Final Four. The spectacular junior guard set a record for the highest-scoring semifinal game and became the first women’s player to post back-to-back 40-point games in the NCAA Tournament. She now has the Hawkeyes in a spot they’ve never been in before — one victory away from a national championship. They’ll have to beat another SEC team to do that as Iowa will face LSU in the title game on Sunday afternoon after the Tigers beat Virginia Tech in the other national semifinal. The loss ended a tremendous season for the defending champion Gamecocks. They finished 36-1.

DALLAS (AP) — LSU is going to the women's national championship game for the first time. Alexis Morris scored 27 points, Angel Reese had 24 and the Tigers beat top-seeded Virginia Tech 79-72 in a national semifinal game. The Tigers are in their second season since coach Kim Mulkey returned to her home state to take over an LSU program that once lost five consecutive national semifinal games. LSU will play Sunday against the winner of the South Carolina-Iowa semifinal. Elizabeth Kitley had 18 points for Virginia Tech, the ACC champion that was in the Final Four for the first time.

HOUSTON (AP) — The saying goes that defense wins championships. But it's largely been top-tier offenses winning the NCAA championship in March Madness. This weekend's Final Four in Houston features two highly rated offenses in Connecticut and Miami. It also features a defensive-heavy approach in San Diego State. According to KenPom data, 17 of the past 20 national champions have ranked in the top 10 for offensive efficiency. And 14 have ranked better at offense than defense.

UNDATED (AP) — Grant McCasland is Texas Tech’s new men's basketball coach. The announcement Friday came a day after North Texas won the NIT title to wrap up the school’s first 30-win season. North Texas was 135-65 in six seasons under the 46-year-old McCasland, who has a master’s degree from Texas Tech. During his time on the Lubbock campus from 1999-2001, McCasland served as director of basketball operations for coach James Dickey. That was after McCasland got his undergraduate degree in 1999 from Baylor, where he was listed as a 5-foot-9 walk-on player who got into 47 games over four seasons. He later was an assistant coach for the Bears and coach Scott Drew.

🏀 Gradey Dick to leave Kansas for NBA draft after 1 season

The Kansas City Chiefs have extended their agreement with Missouri Western State University to make St. Joseph the home of Chiefs Training Camp&nbsp;through the 2024 season.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — The Kansas City Royals made seven-time All-Star catcher Salvador Perez the fourth captain in franchise history before their opener against the Minnesota Twins on Thursday, rewarding one of the club's most popular players with the rare title.

Unlike football or basketball, the captain title is bestowed upon players that have either achieved a tremendous amount or displayed exemplary leadership over a lengthy period of time.

Along with his near-annual trips to the All-Star game, the affable catcher has won four Silver Slugger awards, five Gold Glove awards and was the MVP of the 2015 World Series, when the Royals beat the Mets for their second championship.

He is also among the most popular players in the Royals clubhouse. Perez's gregarious nature immediately puts young players at ease, which is a good thing for a club in the midst of a major youth movement, and he's always willing to sign autographs and take photographs for fans that show up long before the first pitch.

"Salvy is a Royals icon, a Kansas City icon and a baseball icon,” Royals general manager J.J. Picollo said. “This honor reflects not just his place in Royals history but just as importantly the work he puts in and the leadership he provides our organization.”

Hall of Fame third baseman George Brett and longtime star Frank White were the first Royals captains. They both held the title from 1989-90, when White retired, and Brett carried it on until his own retirement after the 1993 season.

Mike Sweeney was the last Royals captain, holding the honor from 2003 until leaving for Oakland for the 2008 season.

Aaron Judge of the Yankees was the only other MLB player with a captain title heading into this season.

The 32-year-old Perez was batting third and behind the plate for the Royals' opener against the Twins. He's coming off a season in which he hit .254 with 23 homers and 76 RBIs while playing just 114 games.

Perez was the club's nominee for the Roberto Clemente Award in 2001, and last year, he won the Lou Gehrig Award, which is presented annually to a Major League Baseball player who best exemplifies the character of the late Yankees star.

Robby Bolin and Chandler Miller combined for nine of the 19 RBIs produced on Thursday helping the 13th ranked Barton Community College baseball team to a doubleheader sweep at Pratt's Stanion Field.

Trailing 5-0 and mustering just one hit through the opening four innings, the Cougar bats came alive in the top of the fifth pounding out four hits, plating six runs and never looked back earning a 7-5 victory in the series opener. In the nightcap, Bolin delivered a three-run home run and Miller turned in a perfect 3-for-3 day at the plate driving in four helping Barton down the Beavers 15-2 in run rule fashion.

The victories push the Cougars out to a three-game lead in the KJCCC West standings at 9-1 and 28-3 overall, while Pratt falls to 6-8 in league play and 17-17 overall. The teams will complete the four-game conference set on Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field in a 1:00 p.m. twinbill.

Loading the bases with a trio of walks to Hayman, Bailey, and Silva in the seventh, Barton's final runs scored would come on a one run Robertson single and two RBI Miller single.Reynolds allowed one unearned run over five innings, scattering five hits, three walks and fanned a trio of Beavers.Colton Wahlstrom tossed the final two innings surrendering two hits, one walk and striking out a pair.
