The biggest opponent for Saturday's Great Bend Tennis Invitational was most likely the wind. Gusts began in the morning and only got stronger throughout the day. The Panthers finished in a tie with Hays with 48 points for second place but dropped to third on a tiebreaker. Ellinwood won the meet with 50 points.

"We all played well despite the conditions," said Panther Coach Chris Manning. "We had some great communication by our doubles teams. We still haven’t figured out who is playing with who, so to watch new teams have success is exciting. Freshman Aiden Stacey continues to impress."

Stacey, playing in the No. 2 singles spot, went 2-0 in pool matches with an 8-0 win against teammate Ryan Roussouw, playing for Hoisington, and an 8-2 win against Hays. Stacey dropped his cross-bracket match 8-2 to the overall winner from Scott City.

At No. 2 doubles for the Panthers, Kai Brit and Kaden Pounds finished at 1-1 overall. They defeated Hoisington's team of Randy Chambers and Jordan O'Neill 8-6 in their lone pool match. Great Bend fell to Scott City 8-6 in cross-bracket competition.

Jacob Parks played in the No. 1 singles spot for Great Bend. He lost an 8-4 match against Hoisington's Kian Delong, and an 8-2 match against Hays. Parks lost his final match to Scott City 8-4.

Ellinwood's No. 1 doubles team of Evan Ringwald and Ty Hammeke went 4-0 on the day.

Panther tennis team battles wind at home invite

The Barton track and field team added 19 new national qualifiers competing this past Friday and Saturday at the Crimson Tide Invitational hosted by the University of Alabama.

Among the two-day achievements, a pair of program top ten impacts were made on the men's side of eleven national qualifying performances.

The first came from sophomore Adrian Nethersole in the 800m, placing 5th overall at the Invite with a current second best national time of 1:49.93 for 10th best in program history. Corlando Chambers was just outside the program list with a 1:51.35 time in placing a spot behind Nethersole in 6th place.

Just over two hours later Hamza Belkhalfi again etched his name on the program top ten list, this time coming in the 1500m with a 3:54.62 stoppage ranking 9th in Barton's illustrious history.

The Barton men had 14 top ten placers in the four-year school dominated meet, the lone winner coming from Christopher Young's 18.57m (60-11.25) shot put throw with Ricardo Hayles placing 8th at 16.26m (53-04.25). The duo chalked up another pair of top ten placing in the discus, Young at 55.98m (183-08) to place 4th with Hayles in 10th with a 50.98m (167-03) mark. Boris Peranovic was the Cougars' lone entry in the hammer throw, placing 6th at 48.02m (157-6).

Sophomore Revon Williams came up .64 seconds shy of another Barton meet title in the 400m by placing runner-up at 46.76 to an Alabama senior runner.

Both of the Cougars' 4x100m relay teams placed 4th, the women's team of Keliza Smith, Maria Umoibang, Ashley Shaw, and Chloe Perryman clocking a season best 45.58 while the men's tandem of Wanyae Belle, Aaron Charles, Williams, and Jayden Singleton clocking a 40.09.

In addition to the relay, the women's squad added eight additional top ten placings with Ivanilda Semedo the lone challenger for a title in a discus runner-up throw of 52.94m (173-08).

Three Barton women had a pair of top ten placings in their respective events. Smith finished 4th in the 100m in a time of 11.57 followed by a 9th place 200m finish of 24.05, Jazmine Williamson placed 7th in the high jump at 1.65m (5-05.00) and 8th in the long jump at 5.70m (18-08.50), and Kay-Lagay Clarke a slot ahead in the long jump at 5.73m (18-09.75) following a 9th placing in the 100m hurdles at 14.07.

Barton is next scheduled to remain in-state competing in the KT Woodman Classic taking place April 11-13.

Barton Track and Field competes at Crimson Tide Invitational,

It doesn't happen often to the Barton Community College baseball team but on Sunday in Dodge City the Cougars had one of those days in dropping both ends of a doubleheader with a pair of 12-2 losses at Dodge City Community College.

Both games fell below the scheduled innings to be played, Dodge City scoring in every frame to cap the opener with a four-run fifth then put another four runs on the board in the eighth to shortened the backend contest.

Barton's third straight loss drops to 13-7 in KJCCC action and 26-11 on the year while Dodge City's first series win over the Cougars since 2016 improves the Conquistadors to 11-5 in league play and 26-12 overall.

The Cougars step out of conference play on Tuesday for a 12:00 p.m. doubleheader versus the junior varsity squad of McPherson College before resuming KJCCC play on Thursday at Cloud County Community College.

Despite four strikeouts in the first two innings, Bradley Feezer took the game one loss falling to 3-3 on the year as a pair of Barton errors helped the Conquistadors plate three runs in the first before an interference call kept the second frame alive resulting in another run digging the Cougars a four run deficit.

Barton collected just four hits in the opener, three coming in the third inning as Wyatt Yetter's leadoff hit would score following a wild pitch and Robby Bolin's RBI single. Owen Clyne led the Cougars with two hits, the first coming on a 12-pitch at-bat resulting in an infield single plating Bolin to cut the deficit in half.

The Conquistadors responded with a pair of hits leading off the home half with Barton's third error resulting in two additional runs hitting the home side of the scoreboard to chase Feezer from the mound.

Dodge City plated an additional run in the third on a two-out double, one in the fourth, and a final four plate crossers in the fifth including a two-run home run for one of seven extra base hits for the Conquistadors in the contest.

Dodge City grabbed a second inning run before opening up a five spot lead in the fourth. A leadoff walk trotted home on a fence-clearer then loaded the bases on a pair of hits and a 1-out walk. The Conquistadors pushed across two runs on consecutive fielder's choices with Barton's lone error of the nightcap plating another for a 5-0 deficit.

A solo home run led off the Dodge City fifth frame extending the lead to 6-0.

The Cougars picked up a run in the sixth, Bolin and Jaron Cotton leading off the frame with hits as Clyne's groundout the lone run producer.

A walk and hit by pitch set up Dodge City's two-run seventh on two hits with the Cougars escaping further damage rolling up their second double play of the game.

Trailing by seven, Barton threatened a big eighth inning with Bolin and Cotton each collecting their second hit of the game to begin the frame with Clyne's walk loading the bases. Brock Howard's sacrifice fly would be all the Cougars would push across in matching game one's seven stranded base runners.

they're set to meet for the national championship on Monday night.

points. The Boilermakers are in the title game for the first time
since falling to UCLA in 1969 in their lone appearance. Purdue is

— Longtime Kentucky coach John Calipari was in negotiations to
potentially leave and take the men’s basketball coaching job at
Arkansas, multiple outlets reported late Sunday. Arkansas officials
have been in discussions with Calipari about the opening, the
Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported, citing anonymous sources. ESPN,
also citing anonymous sources, reported that Calipari is finalizing a
five-year deal. The 65-year-old Hall of Fame coach has spent the last
15 seasons at Kentucky. Athletic director Mitch Barnhart recently
said Calipari would return despite calls for his firing following the
Wildcats’ third consecutive early exit from the NCAA Tournament.

UNDATED (AP) —
William Byron took the lead with 73 laps to go and held onto it
during a two-lap overtime finish to enhance Hendrick Motorsports’
celebration of its 40-year anniversary with a victory in the NASCAR
Cup Series at Martinsville Speedway. Byron was the first of the
contenders to pit under a green flag and moved to the front 31 laps
later when the all the drivers had finally pitted. He won for the
third time this season, and the second time on the 0.526-mile oval.
Kyle Larson was second, followed by Chase Elliott, giving the team
the first 1-2-3 finish in track history.

SAN ANTONIO (AP) —
Akshay Bhatia is headed to the Masters after winning the Valero Texas
Open. He never imagined how it would pan out. Bhatia had a six-shot
lead going to the back nine. He had to make a 12-foot birdie putt
just to force a playoff with Denny McCarthy. Bhatia won when McCarthy
dumped a wedge into the water. It was a tough ending for McCarthy
considering how brilliant he played. He made eight birdies on the
back nine, including the last seven in a row for a 63. Bhatia held
his own with a 67. Rory McIlroy was a distant third.

The late addition
of Class 3A Lakin to Friday’s Jack Bowman Invitational at Great Bend High
School proved to be a good one for track and field fans. Junior Colter Oldham
stole some of the show by bouncing the shot put out over the wall with the
state’s best throw this spring. The Broncs finished third against mostly larger
schools with 90 points. Andale took the win over Bishop Carroll 123.75-100.
Great Bend scored 41 points for ninth place.

Panther freshman
Cooper Ohnmacht had some highlights of his own in the jumping events. In just his
second varsity meet, he added to one of the state’s best triple jumps this
spring for the gold by eight inches at 44-5. Ben Nicholson finished eighth at
39-4, and Kellen Brown placed 10th at 38-3.5.

Ohnmacht made his
long jump debut against tough competition, taking the bronze at 21-8.5, and
missing the silver medal by just an inch. 

Oldham’s sweep in
the throws included a javelin win by more than two feet at 166-8. Panther
senior Matthew Johnson placed sixth at 143-1. 

The sprints
featured some of the best in Kansas this spring. Ramiro Rocho made the finals
where he placed fifth in 23.99 to miss the bronze by a quarter of a second.
Rocho was a silver medalist in the 400m dash in 53.24, 1.2 seconds behind the
winner from Campus. Braylon Moore finished eighth in 55.32.

Ismael Ramirez
placed fifth in the 1600m run in 4:44.59 to miss the bronze by six seconds.
Tavon Stroup ran eighth in 4:50.50. Stroup also ran 13th in the
3200m run in 10:58.03. That event featured four runners under 10 minutes despite
the wind.

The Panther 4x4
team of Rocho, Moore, Ohnmacht, and Pedro Enriquez placed sixth in 3:38.04 to
miss the bronze by three seconds.

Ohnmacht wins another triple gold; boys ninth at Bowman Invite

Even without
reigning Class 5A state champion high jumper Valarie Luna at Friday’s Jack
Bowman Invitational, the event remained a good one. Hays junior Katie
Linenberger and Great Bend senior Sadie Spray, the reigning state silver and
bronze medalists, respectively, were joined by Lakin freshman Aryn Michaelis
and her debut at 5-7 for the state lead, and another state qualifier in Lady Panther junior Cassie
Ellegood.

Linenberger took
the gold at 5-4, beating another state qualifier in Bishop Carroll’s Kristina
Mount on an earlier jump. Ellegood, Michaelis, and Spray each cleared the bar
at 5-2 to finish in that order.

Despite losing a
handful of points in the throws, five-time 4A champion Andale still took the
team title with 128 points. Hays scored 100.33 points for second, followed by
Great bend with 96.33 points in third. Bishop Carroll finished with 87 points
for fourth.

The Lady Panther
4x8 team of Sienna Smith, Reese Bullard, Kate Welcher, and Eliana Beckham was
able to hold off Carroll by just over a second for the win in 10:15.32. 

Senior Macy
Nachtigal moved her unbeaten streak to two meets by winning the javelin by 12
feet with a throw of 124-8. She led Class 5A after one week of action. Kimberly Hofflinger finished 12th at
95-10, followed by Reese King in 13th at 95-9, and Allie Gerhart at
94-9. MacKenzie Lindberg placed 16th at 93-3.

Beckham held off
Carroll’s Sofia Wendell for the 4x8 win. The duo squared back off in the open
800 with Beckham winning by three seconds in 2:26.70. Smith ran third in
2:32.65, and Welcher finished eighth in 2:39.67. 

Spray made her
return to the 300m hurdles after winning a state medal a year ago. She ran
third in 50.19 to miss the silver by half a second. 

Missing in action
Friday was Salina Central’s Katelyn Rupe, the top distance runner in Kansas
this year. Lady Panther senior Addy Nicholson still had to contend with Central
freshman Kaylie Shultz, who finished second to Rupe at the 5A state cross
country meet. Shultz won the 1600 by 18 seconds in 5:11.83. Nicholson ran third
in 5:33.06 to miss the silver by less than four seconds. Marissa Boone led a
pack of Panthers in seventh in 5:49.67, followed by Bella Long in 5:50.60, and Morgan
Beckwith in 5:51.30. Teah King ran in the other heat but finished 10th
behind Beckwith in 5:57.78.

Shultz won the
3200m run by 63 seconds in 11:01.05 as one of the state leaders in 2024.
Nicholson finished third in 12:11.61, seven seconds behind the silver. Boone
ran fifth in 12:22.23, followed by Beckwith in 12:34.86, and King in seventh
with a time of 12:48.78.

Allie Gerhart
finished third in the shot put on a throw of 34-3, just 10 inches from the
silver medal. Natalee Daniels placed seventh at 33-3.5.

Great Bend’s 4x4
team of Spray, Beckham, Bullard, and Kara Feist rounded out the night with a
fourth-place finish in 4:20.26 to miss the bronze by less than two seconds.

Lady Panthers finish third at Jack Bowman Invitational

Along with higher temperatures, the seventh-ranked Panther baseball team also had to contend with windy conditions in Friday's doubleheader against Liberal at the Sports Complex. Great Bend took game one 8-5, then blanked the Redskins 6-0 in game two to improve to 8-1 on the season.

Liberal scored in each of the first three innings of game one to lead 5-1 after three at bats. Great Bend used some small ball to tied things up in the bottom of the third. That 5-5 tied lasted until the sixth inning.&nbsp; Koehn Ribordy led the Panthers off with a walk, then came around the bases via a home run from Carson Umphres. Ian Premer followed with a single, scoring on a single from Trenton Kern.

Hunter Herrman came on in relief of Ribordy in the sixth, striking out two to get out of a jam. Herrman struck out another in the seventh before the Redskins batted into a double play to end the game. Herrman got the win with three strikeouts in his five outs recorded. Ribordy threw 3.1 innings, allowing no hits, striking out five, and walking four. Umphres pitched two innings, striking out five and giving up four walks. The Redskins managed three earned runs on four hits against Umphres.

Umphres came up a triple shy of the cycle with three hits and a walk, driving in two and scoring three times. Premer had the triple and two singles to finish with three RBIs and two runs. Kern doubled and singled twice, and Owen Kaiser doubled for his one hit.

Daxton Minton got the start in game two, allowing no runs on three hits and striking out four. Peyden Oelger finished out the game with three hitless innings and a strikeout.

The Panther offense, meanwhile, wasted no time getting on the board with three runs in the first and singled runs in each of the next three innings.

Kern and Premer each singled twice. JJ Grove doubled for his lone hit, and Ribordy singled and walked twice.&nbsp;

No. 7 Panther baseball takes two from Liberal

Hosted by the Cougar Booster Club, in conjunction with the Best Western Angus Inn, a public celebration of the first ever National Championship title achieved by the Barton men's basketball program is planned for Wednesday, April 10, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Best Western Courtyard.

This past Saturday the Cougars achieved its season's final mission in capturing the 2024 NJCAA Division I Championship with an 88-73 victory over Triton College. The person spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity because the deal is pending a physical.

Danna had a career-best 6 1/2 sacks last season plus seven tackles for loss and 13 quarterback hits while playing 74% of the defensive snaps.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — MJ Melendez broke an eighth-inning tie with a single to help the Kansas City Royals beat the Chicago White Sox 2-1 on Friday night.

With one out, Melendez hit a soft liner to left off Michael Kopech (0-1) to score pinch-runner Dairon Blanco.

Chris Stratton (1-0) worked a scoreless eighth for the victory.

In the ninth inning, Luis Robert Jr. doubled down the left-field line with one out, pulling up lame at second with a left hip flexor injury. Robert suffered a similar injury in 2021, missing over three months of the season.

James McArthur entered the game with the tying run at second and induced an ending double-play grounder for his first save.

“It was a hard-fought game,” White Sox manager Pedro Grifol said. “We really didn’t get much going until the later innings. We had a couple of opportunities to do something and didn’t capitalize.”

The Royals opened the scoring in the first inning on the first of Salvador Pérez’s three hits, a two-out RBI double off the top of the wall in center. Pérez is tied for second in the American League with nine RBIs.

Melendez, Pérez, and Bobby Witt Jr. rank among AL leaders in slugging, homers, and OPS.

“Last season, I faced immense pressure to perform at the plate, which affected my mental preparation” Melendez said. “I made adjustments in the second half of the season and worked on my swing during the offseason.”

Gavin Sheets tied it with a leadoff homer in the second, lifting starter Brady Singer’s slider 391 feet down the line in right.

After the homer, Singer retired the next 15 hitters consecutively on 48 pitches, striking out four and getting nine ground balls.

“We made a lot of quick outs,” Grifol said. “Got to give credit to Singer. He was really pounding the strike zone, keeping the ball down (with) heavy sink. He was a ground-ball machine today.”

Singer faced two more than the minimum in completing 6 1/3 innings, while allowing a run on two hits and one walk with four strikeouts.

Royals starters lead the majors with seven quality starts.

White Sox starter Erick Fedde worked five innings, allowing a run on six hits and two walks, with four strikeouts. He exited in the sixth after allowing a leadoff hit to Pérez and a walk to Melendez.

Reliever John Brebbia retired the next two batters, leaving after injuring his right calf while fielding a soft grounder. Steven Wilson struck out Hunter Renfroe to end the threat, stranding a runner at third.

Chicago has played five one-run games, losing four.

White Sox OF Eloy Jiménez was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to Tuesday because of a left adductor strain.

The White Sox selected the contract of OF Robbie Grossman from Triple-A Charlotte and designated RHP Alex Speas for assignment.

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) — Red Sox shortstop Trevor Story exited Boston’s game against the Angels in the fourth inning after injuring his left shoulder on a backhand dive to stop a hit by Mike Trout. Story got his glove on Trout’s hard grounder, but he was left writhing in pain after hitting the grass hard on his arm and shoulder. Story stayed on the grass for about two minutes before heading to the dugout. Pablo Reyes replaced Story at shortstop.

ATLANTA (AP) — Spencer Strider, Atlanta’s ace and the major league leader in wins and strikeouts last season, will have tests on his right elbow Saturday after complaining about discomfort in Friday night’s game. Strider lasted only four innings, allowing five runs on seven hits. He recorded four strikeouts and struggled with control, walking three batters. Braves manager Brian Snitker said Strider “was complaining about his elbow. ... He was uncomfortable with how it was feeling.” When asked when Strider felt the discomfort, Snitker said it “might have been throughout the game.” Snitker said he learned of the issue after Strider left the game. The loss of Strider could be devastating to Atlanta’s rotation. Strider was Snitker’s choice to open the season as the Braves' No. 1 starter.

South Carolina will face Caitlin Clark and Iowa for the national title on Sunday in a rematch of a Final Four game last year won by the Hawkeyes. Aziaha James scored 20 points for No. 3 seed N.C. That edged Dan Hurley of UConn, who received 21 votes. The balloting was completed before the NCAA Tournament. Houston lost to Duke in the Sweet 16 after All-American guard Jamal Shead was hurt. Sampson is the 10th coach to win the award multiple times after also winning it at Oklahoma in 1995.

He received 57 of 62 votes from journalists who vote in the weekly AP Top 25. Tennessee’s Dalton Knecht received three votes and Houston’s Jamal Shead got two.

DALLAS (AP) — Kansas City Chiefs' player Rashee Rice was the driver of one of two speeding sports cars who left after causing a chain-reaction crash on a Dallas highway over the weekend, the wide receiver's attorney said Thursday.

Why Rice left the crash Saturday was “a good question that's still being investigated," said Rice’s attorney, state Sen. Royce West, but he declined to elaborate. West expects charges to be filed against Rice, who was driving a Lamborghini sport utility vehicle, he said at a news conference without his client.

“He’s a young man that made a mistake,” West said Thursday, adding that Rice’s “heart goes out” to those who were injured. The crash involved the Lamborghini, a Corvette and four other vehicles and left four people with minor injuries, police said.

The driver of the Corvette also left without determining whether anyone needed medical attention or providing their information, police said. The Corvette belongs to Rice, West said Thursday, but no information has been released on the driver.

Rice posted to his Instagram Story on Wednesday that he was taking “full responsibility” for his part in the wreck.

Police have said the drivers of the Corvette and Lamborghini were speeding in the far left lane when they lost control and the Lamborghini traveled onto the shoulder and hit the center median wall, causing the chain collision.

West said that Rice, who is 23, will “do everything in his power to bring their life back to as normal as possible in terms of injuries, in terms of property damage.”

Investigators are interviewing witnesses, victims and others who may have been involved, police said Thursday.

Rice was leasing the Lamborghini from The Classic Lifestyle, said Kyle Coker, an attorney for the Dallas-based exotic car rental company.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Nelson Velázquez and MJ Melendez each homered and drove in two runs, leading Seth Lugo and the Kansas City Royals to a 10-1 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Thursday night.

Right fielder Hunter Renfroe threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the sixth inning before Kansas City broke it open with eight runs in the seventh.

Velázquez drove in the first two runs of the game with a single and a homer.

“I was just trying to make contact,” he said. “I’m feeling good, trusting in everything we have been working on since spring training.”

Lugo (1-0) allowed one run and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings for his first win with the Royals. It was the latest quality outing by one of Kansas City's starters, who have a 1.43 ERA.

“Seth attacked from the beginning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “He threw a ton of strikes and mixed in all his pitches. He gets a lot of groundballs.”

Lugo struck out three and walked two. Angel Zerpa retired Andrew Benintendi with a runner on second to end the seventh, preserving a one-run lead.

“I thought I made some good pitches,” Lugo said. “They had some soft hits.”

Michael Soroka (0-1) gave up two runs and six hits over six innings in his second start for the White Sox.

Kansas City scored in the second on an RBI single by Velázquez.

The White Sox loaded the bases with one out in the third on a pair of singles and an error by shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., but Witt redeemed himself by turning an inning-ending double play.
