Albertine Josephine Foos, 93, passed away June 11, 2020, at Mennonite Friendship Manor, South Hutchinson. Albertine was born July 31, 1926, at Victoria, to Alfonse and Claire (Graf) Schmidtberger. Albertine married Clarence Foos January 29, 1955, in Victoria. He died October 8, 1997.

Coming from McPherson in 1959, Albertine was a Great Bend resident for most of her life. Albertine was self-employed sales lady for Avon and was a member of Prince of Peace Parish at St. Patrick Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She enjoyed bingo and especially enjoyed spending time with her family and friends.

Survivors include, two sons, Curtis Foos and wife Kay Tally Foos of Kerrville, Texas, and Craig Foos and wife Valerie of Lawrence; two daughters, Cynthia Klotz and husband Don, and Carla Schmidt and husband Wayne, all of Pleasant Hill, Mo.; a brother, Marvin Schmidtberger and wife Nancy of Pratt; two sisters, Edna Ptacek of Minneapolis, and Rosie Leiker of Hutchinson; eight grandchildren, Jennifer McMinn, Jessica Burch, Claire Tally Foos, Kate Thomas (Josh, Fred Tally Foos, Joe Tally Foos, Alisha Smith and Joshua Schmidt; six great grandchildren, Haylee McDaniel, Kameron McDaniel, Brantlee Burch, Dominic McKinsey, Donivon Hopewell and Draiden Hopewell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Clarence Foos; one daughter, Cathy Foos; two brothers, Mike Schmidtberger and Bob Schmidtberger; and four sisters, Mary Schmidtberger, Hubertine Schultz, Minnie Roth, and Sister Vivian Schmidtberger. 

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 15, 2020, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, with Father Don presiding.  Interment will follow at Great Bend Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, June 14, 2020, with a Vigil and Rosary at 7:00 p.m., all at Bryant Funeral Home. David A. Nelson, 44, died June 8, 2020, at Ascension Via Christi – St. Francis, Wichita, Kansas. He was born December 2, 1975, in Great Bend, Kansas. David was the son of Curtis and Jan (Lupton) Nelson. He graduated from Claflin High School in 1995 and then later from North Central Kansas Technical College, Beloit, Kansas.

A lifetime Barton County resident, David was the owner and service tech for Central Kansas Commercial Laundry.  David’s three most important things in life were his work, family, and friends.

On July 17, 2010, he married Carissa Voos in Great Bend, Kansas. 

He is survived by his wife of the home, Carissa Nelson; children; Samantha, Sara, Zander, Micah, Lauren, and Macy; honorary daughters, Monica, Megan, and Leah; sisters, Alethea Nelson of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Jennifer Garcia and husband Frank of Harrison, Arkansas; biological father, Tim Miller and wife Cathy; and Michael and Becky of Great Bend; grandmother, Deon Lupton of Great Bend; parents-in-law, Bob &amp; Elaine Voos of Russell; previous wife, Alisha Stroede; grandchildren, Harper, Daisy, Carter, and Chase; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews, and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Curtis and Jan Nelson.

Corpus Christi, Texas - Wesley Charles Cowan, 46, died
unexpectedly June 2, 2020, at his home in Corpus Christi, Texas. He was born on
March 25, 1974, in Wichita, Kansas, the son of Grant K. and Mary M. (Frederick)
Cowan.

Wesley
spent most of his life working for the railroad first as a conductor and then
working his way up to engineer. He enjoyed the opportunity to travel and see
different parts of the country and world that this career allowed him. He
worked for the railroad until he retired due to disability a few years ago,
settling in the Corpus Christi, Texas area at that time. After settling in
Corpus Christi, Texas he invested in rental properties and fixed them up. He
loved to help his friends and would help them out whenever he could. He was an
avid dog lover, which was shown in the love he had for his three chocolate
labs. Above all, he was a devoted father, brother, uncle, and cousin. 

Survivors
include, his son, Patrick Cowan and wife Karisa of Great Bend, and his
daughter, Krystal Tuggle and husband Casey of Hoisington, a sister, Cassandra
Alexander and husband Darren, along with a niece, Brooklyn, all of Coffeyville.
Also surviving are many aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by
his parents and grandparents. 

Visitation
will be held from 9:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday, June 12, 2020 at Bryant
Funeral Home, with family to receive friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Maxine Elda Leah Maresch, 102, Rush Center, Kansas, died
Sunday, June 7, 2020, at Rush County Memorial Hospital Intermediate Swing Bed,
La Crosse, Kansas.

Maxine was born
August 18, 1917, at the family farm southwest of Rush Center, Kansas, the daughter
of Jacob Henry and Mary Josephine Barbara (Meyer) Weltmer. &nbsp;She was a lifelong resident of Rush County,
Kansas.&nbsp; A 1939 graduate of La Crosse High
School, La Crosse, Kansas, she worked alongside her husband, Lester as a farm
wife and homemaker.

Maxine was a member
of the United Methodist Church, La Crosse, Kansas, the Rush County Historical
Society, La Crosse, Kansas, Ellis County Historical Society, Hays, Kansas, and
the Kansas Genealogical Society, Dodge City, Kansas, Walnut Valley Senior
Center, Rush Center, Kansas, and Sixty Plus Club, La Crosse, Kansas. 

On June 8, 1941, she
married Lester Wolter Maresch at Rush Center, Kansas.&nbsp; He preceded her in death February 28, 1988.

Survivors
include:&nbsp; one son, Daryl Maresch
(Shirley, Nekoma, Kansas; three daughters, Bonita Oliva (Leo, Woodston,
Kansas, Sharon Hays (David, Rush Center, Kansas, and Judy Coen, Hays, Kansas;

Great Bend resident, Mike was an insurance agent for 25 years. He was a graduate
of Hoisington High School and attended Pittsburgh State University.

Thomas Eugene Hickel, 58, passed away May 30, 2020, at his home in Great Bend.
He was born on September 10, 1961 at Ellinwood, to Charles &amp; Gloria Ann
(Thill) Hickel. He married Rita Axman on February 17, 1990, at Olmitz. She
survives.

A lifetime
Barton county resident, Tom was a fab tech for Roto-Mix. He was a member of
Prince of Peace parish in Great Bend, the NRA, American Prostate Cancer
Foundation, and a participant in Relay for Life. He was an avid Nascar fan,
always rooting on Chase Elliott and Jeff Gordon. Tom enjoyed deer, turtle and
coyote hunting. He was a hardworking family man, always enjoying spending time
with his family, and his grandchildren were his prized possession. 

Survivors
include, his wife, Rita Hickel of the home; a son, Carl Hickel and wife Bailey
of Midland, Tex.; two daughters, Reba Kohn and husband Kyle of Kinsley, and

Thomas Eugene Hickel

Allen D. Marsh, Major, USAF-retired, passed away on
May 13, 2020, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family and friends.&nbsp;

Born in Emporia Kansas, May 17, 1943, and moving to
Great Bend in 1946, Allen was the first son of Roger and Agnes Marsh. He was a
member of the Baker Avenue Baptist Church and a 1961 graduate of GBHS, where he
excelled scholastically, served as drum major for the marching band, performed
in The Mikado and HMS Pinafore operettas, and played bugle in the Argonne
Rebels Drum and Bugle Corps.&nbsp; After graduation, he attended the University
of Kansas where he played trombone in the KU Marching Band.&nbsp; In 1963, he
left college to enlist in the United States Air Force.&nbsp; Based upon
aptitude testing, USAF sent him to Yale University to learn Mandarin Chinese;
then, he served with the 6987th Security Group at Shu Lin Kou, Taiwan, as a
voice processing specialist.&nbsp; In Taiwan, he married Hsu Yu Chen
“Jeanie”.&nbsp; His next assignment was to the 381st Strategic Missile Wing,
McConnell AFB. Then, the USAF selected him into the highly desirable Airmen’s
Education and Commissioning Program, through which he earned a baccalaureate
degree in mathematics from Colorado State University in 1968, resulting in
commissioning as a Second Lieutenant.&nbsp; Next, the USAF sent him to Georgia
Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, where he earned a masters
degree in information science.&nbsp; He ultimately earned a military retirement
after a career as a senior systems software engineer and hardware designer for
US Air Forces Europe in Wiesbaden, Germany; the Air Force Personnel Center at
Randolph AFB, Texas; the US Logistics Group in Adana, Turkey; and, Air Force
Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB, California.&nbsp; After retirement, he
continued in trade, with employment in multiple systems, logistics, banking and
aerospace corporations throughout California, moving to Sacramento in 1990.

One son-in-law, Robert Sharon of Sacramento.
predeceased him.&nbsp; Marsh married Nancy Hullin in 1989; she survives.&nbsp; He
will also be missed by loving daughters, Jennifer Sharon of Sacramento, Elise
of Washington, DC, and Addie of San Francisco, California; three grandchildren,
Zach, Ava and Blake Sharon.&nbsp; He leaves three brothers Dale and wife
Phyllis, of Great Bend; Richard and wife PilSun, of Florence, Arizona, and
Robert, and wife Norma, of Mesa, Arizona.

The family will hold a limited, private service;
following the COVID-19 resolution, a formal military honors ceremony will be
held (TBD) at the Sacramento National Military Cemetery.

LINN Valley — Gerald “Jerry” Thomas Hickel, 76, Linn Valley, Kan.
passed away at his home on Thursday, May 21, 2020.

Jerry was born March 7, 1944 in Great Bend, Kan. to Frank and
Katherine (Krom) Hickel. He grew up in Beaver and Great Bend, Kan. and
graduated from Great Bend High School in 1962. He attended Emporia State
University, Emporia, Kan. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Army. He
married Jolene Marie Schmidt in Hoisington, Kan. on May 31, 1969. They lived in
Independence, Kan. for four years before moving back to Great Bend. Jerry
retired in 2008 as Director of Material Control for Fuller Brush Company in
Great Bend, Kan. after 32 years and moved to Linn Valley, Kan. in 2008.&nbsp; 

He was a member of the American Legion, and The Odd Fellows Lodge
in both Great Bend and Independence, Kan. He served as President of Cheyenne
Bottoms Sportsmen Club from 1984-1985. He was a Boy Scout leader and the first
Scout Master of Troop 149 which he formed in 1986 and was honored as the
Webelos “Leader of the Year”, Cheyenne District, Kanza Council. Jerry received
the President’s Award from CPAC with Fuller Brush Company in 2000. He will be
missed by family and friends.

Jerry is preceded in death by his parents; wife Jolene and brother
Gary Lee Hickel. He is survived by his children Matthew Lee Hickel, Linn
Valley, Kan. and Angela (David) Hickel Durland, Spring Hill, Kan.; sister

Bend resident, Helen worked for many years as a waitress. She was a member of

enjoyed antiques, her family, and grandchildren, but especially loved having
large family get-togethers.

Stafford. She was born on June 5, 1921, at Tipton, to Casper &amp; Anna (Junk) Pahls. She
married Virgil Mayers in Riverside, Calif. and they later divorced. A Great
Bend resident, Helen worked for many years as a waitress. She was a member of
Prince of Peace Parish at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend. She
enjoyed antiques, her family, and grandchildren, but especially loved having
large family get-togethers.Survivors
include, three sons, Joe Mayers of Great Bend, Frank Mayers and wife Jolene of
Piedmont, Okla., and John Mayers and wife Marie of Albert; three daughters,

GREAT BEND – M. Aileen Bryant, 93, a long-time resident of Great Bend, passed away Sunday, May 17, 2020, at Almost Home, an assisted living facility in Great Bend, Kan., where she had been a resident for ﬁve years. She was born in Hoisington, Kan., on July 1, 1926, the daughter of Willard Byron “Bus” and Frances Fern (Kent) Hall. Aileen married Laurence Eugene “Larry” Bryant Jan. 1, 1947, in Hoisington. Larry passed away June 6, 2011.

Aileen was a graduate of Hoisington High School. Following graduation, she worked for Pennsylvania Central Airlines and lived in Detroit, and following marriage, lived in Philadelphia for three years, while Larry attended Eckles College of Mortuary Science. Aileen later worked for American State Bank in Great Bend from which she retired after 28 years. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Craig Bryant and wife Nancy of Osceola, Mo.; one daughter, Lexie Frankovich and husband Mike of Houston, Texas; one sister, Ramona Tefft of Wichita; six grandchildren, 16 great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Aileen was preceded in passing by her husband, Larry; and two brothers, Bob Hall and Kent Hall.

GREAT BEND - Leila Joyce (Pearce) Messick, 90, passed away May 16, 2020, at Brookdale Assisted Senior Living, Great Bend. Leila was born on August 23, 1929, in Hollis, Kansas, to Chester &amp; Ada (Bleu) Pearce. She married Roy H. Miller, on March 15, 1949. Roy passed away February 28, 1987. Leila then married Jack Messick, on June 8, 1990, in Alden, Kansas.

Leila, a Great Bend resident, was a teller at Security State Bank. She was an active member of the Presbyterian church, Women’s Circle, and the Great Bend Historical Society. Leila enjoyed flower gardening, yard work, bird watching, traveling, and spending time with her family.

Survivors include, her husband, Jack Messick of Eureka; a son, Jay Miller (Karole Erikson) and family of Great Bend; a daughter, Yvone Mitchell (Dale) and family of Omaha, Neb.; a brother, Harold Pearce of Houston, Tex.; step children, Fred Messick and family of Valley Center, and Cathy (Messick) Coon and family of Eureka. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Roy Miller; step children, William “Bo” Messick and Jackie Pryce; four sisters, Dorothy, Darlene, Norma and Lois; and a brother, James.

Hays. He was born January 28, 1955 in Great Bend Kansas the son of Bruce and
Hazel (Ward) Turley. Steve married Sandra McPhail on June 22, 1991 at the First
Assembly of God in Great Bend.

Steve was a
lifelong Barton County resident. He served with the US Marines during the Viet
Nam conflict. He was a member of the VFW Post 3111. He was passionate at bbq’ing
and loved to play with his sons and dogs.

Survivors
include his wife Sandra of the home; two sons Steve Jr. and Shawn Turley both
of Hoisington; two brothers Darrell (Mary) Turley and Tom Turley all of Great
Bend; two sisters Phyllis (Greg) Minet of Ocala, FL and Saundra Turley of Great

Great Bend resident, was a bookkeeper for Fuller Brush Industries, retiring in
2004, previously working as a med aide for several area nursing homes.&nbsp; She was an active member of King United
Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, former member of The Argonne Rebels
Drum and Bugle Corps, and enjoyed fellowship with former classmates, friends
and especially, her family.

include four sons, Gene Becker, Jr. (Nancy) of Kincaid, Steve Becker (Kim) of
Elsmore, Mark Becker (Chris) of Hutchinson, and Michael Becker (Wanda) of Great

She was born on April 29, 1932, in Loretto, to Joe G. and Hildegard
"Hilda" M. (Von Feldt) Basgall. She married Vernon John Bellendir on
May 7, 1951, in Loretto. He died August 11, 2008.

Coming from
Russell in 1955, Vera was the secretary for St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church
for over 25 years. She was also a member of the Church and Altar Society. She
enjoyed sewing and cooking, but especially enjoyed spending time with her
grandchildren and great grandson.

include a son Brian Bellendir and wife Carol of Great Bend; two daughters,
Lynee Habiger and husband James of Kinsley, and Tracy Ummen and husband Mark of
Springfield, Va.; a sister Arbutus "Boots" Maltby and husband Bob of

Charles T. Brown, Jr. passed
away on May 11, 2020, surrounded by the love and prayers of his family and
friends. He was born in Erie, PA on December 22, 1931, Charlie Brown had a
large and extended family. “Sonny” as affectionately known, was the only son of
Charles T. Brown, Sr. and Hettie Jane (Kunkle) Brown and adored by his 3
sisters, Bea, Shirley and Mary Jane.

with his father’s job as an AT&amp;T lineman, they settled in Ligonier, PA
where Charlie attended Ligonier High school and played football, basketball and
baseball. His athletic ability earned him a full scholarship to Sterling
College, in Sterling, KS. After high school graduation at the age of 17, his
father gave him a bus ticket and $25 and he headed west where he would spend
the rest of his life as a Kansan. He did return to PA while completing his
Masters Degree in Biology from Penn State.

At Sterling College, Charlie
excelled in football, basketball and baseball and one of his proudest moments
was being inducted into the Sterling Sports Hall of Fame as a Tri-Letterman in
1998. At Sterling he met his future wife, Carol McCullough from College
Springs, Iowa and after graduating and spending two years in the Army Medical
Corps, he followed Carol to Great Bend, KS where they both began long and
successful careers as educators. They married and had 4 daughters, raising them
in the First United Presbyterian Church. Carol passed in 2003 from Lymphoma.

Charlie taught Biology at
Great Bend High School and continued to enjoy athletics as assistant coach for
football and basketball, and learning the game of golf. In 1970 he was hired as
a Life Sciences Instructor at Barton County Community College when he taught
the rest of his career. During his many years as an outstanding, dedicated
educator, he was admired and respected by his peers, his students and his
community. In 1965 he was presented the first Outstanding Young Educator by the
Junior Chamber of Commerce, and in 1985, he was honored with the BCCC
Distinguished Instructor Award. He appreciated the personal communication,
updates and success stories from those many students he taught and mentored
over his career more than any award and enjoyed the invitations to many GBHS
class reunions as a highlight of each year of his retirement.

Active in the community, he
was a member and Past Master of Great Bend Masonic Lodge #15, of the American
Legion post no. 180 in Great Bend, and member of the Lake Barton Golf Club. He
served several terms as Elder at The First United Presbyterian Church and
multiple other leadership positions. He had a wide circle of friends from
teaching, church, hunting, Lake Barton Golf Club and played with the same
bridge group for 40 years. He turned his athletic abilities to golf and spent
countless weekends with the golf buddies – even winning the Lake Barton Open
Golf Tournament in 1975 out of 150 participants. His hole in one was one of his
favorite life accomplishments.

Charlie Brown was lucky. Ruth
and Bob Dixon were friends of Charlie’s and Carol’s since Sterling College
days.&nbsp; Ruth was Carol’s life-long best
friend since their early grade school days in Iowa. They shared many life
experiences, knew well each other’s children and all had a strong faith in
God.&nbsp; When Bob Dixon passed away
suddenly, Charlie was there to be supportive of Ruth, and through that support,
they grew to love each other and were married in 2006.

Charles T. Brown, Jr. is
survived by his wife, Ruth, his stepsons Bob and Steve Dixon, his daughters
Beverly (Brad) Burnside, Barbara Brown, Cheryl (Mike) Gage and Charlene (Jim)
Lee, his 12 loving grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Charles T. Brown, Sr. and Hettie Jane (Kunkle) Brown and adored by his 3
sisters, Bea, Shirley and Mary Jane.After moving around the state

Marie Jilg, 94, passed away May 12, 2020, at River Bend Assisted Living, Great
Bend.&nbsp; She was born May 21, 1925 in
Olmitz, to Adolph and Rosa (Hickey) Bahr. Teresa married Carl A. Jilg August
20, 1946, in Olmitz.&nbsp; He died October 30,
2016.

A long-time
Albert resident, Teresa was a bank teller for Farmers Bank &amp; Trust in
Albert and Otis State Bank in Otis. After retiring, she worked at the Albert
Post Office. Teresa was a member of St. Ann Catholic Church in Olmitz,
Daughters of Isabella and the Altar Society. 

Survivors
include, two daughters, Susan Worthen and husband Lane of McKinney, Texas, and
Eileen Walcher of Great Bend; a brother, Eugene Bahr of Olmitz; a sister, Rose
Marie Frieb of Olmitz; four grandchildren, Jeff Worthen, Michelle Schindler,
Bryan Worthen, and Billy Brown, II; fourteen great grandchildren; and five great
great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband,
Carl Jilg; a son in law, Dean Walcher; a brother, Roland Bahr; and a
granddaughter, Christina Brown. 

A Mass of Christian
Burial will be 10:30 a.m., Saturday, May 16, 2020, at St. Ann Catholic Church

Adabelle Koelling, 101, passed away May 14, 2020, at her home in Great Bend.
She was born on May 6, 1919, in rural Stafford county, to Elmer Lewis &amp;
Ella Francis (Rusco) Dale. She married Dean Koelling on July 7, 1940, Stafford
county.

A lifetime
Stafford and Barton county resident, Adabelle was a homemaker. She was a member
of the First United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women, Order of the
Eastern Star, and a former Girl Scout leader. Adabelle was the first Homecoming
Queen of Stafford High School in 1937. She enjoyed gardening, and canning. She
was a good neighbor and especially enjoyed being with her family. 

Survivors
include, three sons, Dale Koelling and wife Maria of Kalamazoo, Mich., William
"Bill" Koelling, and Wayne Koelling and wife Cheryl, all of Great
Bend; a daughter, Deanna Blahut and husband Steve of Claremore, Okla.; four
grandchildren, Melinda Koelling-Richter, Alexia Koelling-Ramsey, Chad Koelling,
and Chuck Koelling; and five great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by
her parents; her husband, Dean Koelling; four brothers, Warren Dale, Murl Dale,
Lewis Dale, and Dick Dale; and three sisters, Mary Glenn, Charlotte Heide, and
Sadie Ruth Barber. 

Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 p.m., Sunday, May

Randall John "Randy" Hawk, son of Gary L. Hawk and Kayla Sue Stover 
was born in Great Bend, KS &nbsp;on November 3, 1963 and passed from this 
life May 10, 2020 in Wichita, KS after a short battle with cancer. He 
was surrounded by family despite the Covid 19 restrictions.

He is survived by his father Gary L. Hawk (Carol, his brothers Rusty
 Hawk (Nanette, Jeff Lanterman (Lorrie) and sister Kala Maris (Kevin, 
daughter Ashley McGrath and many nieces and nephews.

He graduated from Great Bend High School in 1982 and went on to earn a
 Bachelors degree in Business Administration at Ft. Hays State 
University.

Throughout his life he had may friends and touched many lives. He was
 the favorite neighbor in his cul-de-sac being well known for his 
willingness to help with whatever was going on.

He loved all thing out of doors and was an avid Kansas City Chiefs and Royals fan.

A family Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;Grace M. Drennon, age 95 years, a lifelong resident of Barton County, passed away on Monday morning, April 27, 2020 in Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Grace was born on July 4, 1924 at Great Bend to Richard and Edith (Crowell) Schneider.&nbsp;&nbsp;The family lived in Albert, Kansas and she attended Country School until Grace was old enough to go to High School, at which time they moved to Great Bend. Grace graduated from Great Bend High School in 1942.&nbsp;&nbsp;She was united in marriage to Daniel M. Drennon on April 19, 1944 at Great Bend, Kansas.&nbsp;&nbsp;Grace worked for many years as a Sales Associate for Montgomery Ward and later Sears, both in Great Bend, until her retirement in 1965.&nbsp;&nbsp;She then provided child care for her grandson, Danny Cates.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Grace volunteered at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend for over 20 years.&nbsp;&nbsp;She loved crafts, ceramics, playing Bingo, and traveling, and one of her favorite things was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and her cat Miss Kitty.&nbsp;&nbsp;Grace was a longtime member of St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Great Bend.

Survivors include one son, Allen (and his wife, Shirley) Drennon of Hays, Kansas and one daughter,&nbsp;&nbsp;Beverly K. Cates of Great Bend, Kansas; three grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;Kris Drennon, Tammy Roberts, and Brian Drennon; one granddaughter-in-law, Jennifer Cates; seven great-grandchildren:&nbsp;&nbsp;Ryan Cates, Tyler Cates, Dylan Roberts, Kylie Roberts, Chase Drennon, Ashton Drennon, and Camden Drennon.&nbsp;&nbsp;Grace was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Daniel M. Martin K. “Marty” Shank

JoAnn
(Gallon) Hiss, loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, and
friend died May 7, 2020, at Woodhaven Care Center, Ellinwood. She was born
December 27, 1927, in Great Bend, the daughter of Elmer P. and Edna V.
(Almquist) Gallon. She married Elward J. Hiss, Jr., “Eldy” on October 26, 1947,
at the First Presbyterian Church in Great Bend. He survives.

A lifetime
resident of Great Bend, JoAnn was an active member of the First Presbyterian
Church and Presbyterian Women.&nbsp; JoAnn
graduated from Great Bend High School in 1945. In her early years, she enjoyed
employment as a bank teller and at Komarek Jewelers, later enjoying all aspects
of family farm life. She was a past church school teacher and an elder of the
church. She was a member of the Central Kansas Thread Benders Quilt Guild, Kansas
Quilters Organization, American Quilter's Society, life member of the Barton
County Historical Society and enjoyed wheat weaving. She was a volunteer with
special interest in the American Red Cross Blood program, serving the program
for over a quarter of a century. 

JoAnn and
her husband, Eldy, were high school sweethearts and were fortunate to be
married for 72 years. They loved their family, friends, and traveling to see
the wonderful world. 

Survivors
include, her husband, Eldy; two sons, Richard L. "Rick" Hiss and wife
Tina, and Elward James Hiss, III "Jim" and wife Melinda; and a
daughter, Sandra K. “Sandy” Hiss, all of Great Bend; four grandchildren, Michelle
(Aaron) Peck of Salina, Bradley (Nikki) Hiss of Great Bend, E.J. Hiss of Kansas
City, Mo., and Veronica Hiss of Wichita; and three great grandchildren, Adia
Peck, Noah Peck and Tony Hiss.&nbsp; JoAnn was
preceded in passing by a sister, Jean Vollmer.

Due to
current restrictions and mass gather limitations, a Celebration of Life will be
held at a later date at First Presbyterian Church.&nbsp; Memorials may be given to First Presbyterian
Church or Barton County Historical Society, in care of Bryant Funeral
Home.&nbsp;
